verbs? What is the function of a verb?
You are correct. Let us look at the
highlighted words carefully, do all of them Students: No ma’am!
indicate action?
Student 3: looked, located, grabbed, and placed are
Which words indicate action? Which words
do not? actions meanwhile walking, kept, grown, sitting,
cooked doesn’t seem like actions ma’am

You’re right! As your classmates said the

words walking, kept, grown, sitting,
cooked are not verbs because they do not
indicate action.
If not to indicate action, what is the
Student 4: they describe the subject instead ma’am.
function of these words?
Correct! So based on this, what do you
think is a participle? Student 5: Ma’am, participles are words that look
like verbs but function as adjectives.

Okay. So we have these so called

‘verbals’ these are words that look like
verbs but function as noun, adjective and
adverbs. We have three kinds of verbals,
infinitive, gerund, and participle. You Students: yes ma’am!
already know about the first two right?
Your classmate is correct, participles are
words that look like verbs in form but are
adjective in function. They answer the
questions what kind or which one or how
many. For example:
Irma’s shining eyes betrayed her
excitement.
The shattered window need replacement.
Please note that they can be in present
and past forms.
Sometimes a participle comes at the
beginning of a phrase which could be
placed either at the beginning of a Students: None ma’am!
sentence or at the end of it.
Example:
Kneeling in front of her father, Lucie
looked at him in silent joy.
Mr. Manette was taken aback, scared that
he couldn’t remember anything.
Just always remember, participles or
participial phrase should be placed near
the word it modifies.
Do you have any questions?
Okay, let’s proceed to your activity.

D. Activity
The teacher will ask the students to
answer Exercise A numbers 1-5 and
Exercise B numbers 6-10 on pages 236
and 237. The students should work with
a partner.

E. Generalization
Before we proceed to your quiz, let us
review first the concepts about participle

Student 6: Verbs indicate action ma’am.

Correct. What do we call those words

Okay, then what are the three kinds of Student 8: gerunds, infinitives, and participles
verbals?

gerunds? Student 10: it is used as direct objects, and subjects
Correct! What about infinitives? ma’am.
Student 11: it serves as adjectives ma’am
