Diversity in living organisms

(Five kingdom classification)

By-Shreya Aggarwal
Class-IX z
Five kingdom classification
Five kingdom classification was proposed by Robert H. Whittaker in
1959.
Criteria For Classification:-
cell structure- prokaryote,eukaryote
Organisms - unicellular,multicellular
Mode of nutrition- plants(autotrophs),fungi and animals(hetrotroph)
Lifestyle-producers(plants),consumers(animals),decomposers(fungi)
Relationship- prokaryote to eukaryote ,unicellular to multicellular
Into five
kingdom
classification
………
Monera or prokaryote
This kingdom includes all unicellular and prokaryotic
organisms .Bacteria occur everywhere and they are
microscopic in nature.
They are both autotrophic and heterotrophic
Reproduction-Asexual (binary fission)
Sub-groups-Archaebacteria and Eubacteria
Example- bacteria and blue green algae
Protista
They are unicellular and eukaryotic organisms.
Some of them have pseudopodia ,cilia or flagella for motility .
They have autrophic and heterotrophic mode of nutrition
Protista reproduce mostly asexually and sexually with cell
fusion and zygote formation
Sub -groups - chrysophytes(golden
algae) ,dinoflagellates,euglenoids and protozoans.
Eg- amoeba, euglena, paramecium
Fungi
They are unicellular and multicellular eukaryotic organisms.
The filamentous fungi comprises of slender, long thread like
construction called hyphae . The mass of hypae is called
mycelium.
They are distict from plants that do not produce chlorophyll.
Reproduction in fungi is mostly by vegetative method such as
fragmentation, fission, budding and asexual reproduction by
spores
Eg- yeast , moulds , mushrooms.
Plantae
The kingdom plantae consists of multicellular,
eukaryotes which have chloroplast .
They are autotrophic in nature
The cell wall mainly comprises of cellulose.
Plants reproduce through asexual vegetative
propagation and sexual method
Eg - plants .
Animalia

The kingdom includes multicellular, eukaryotes and lack

cell wall
They are heterotrophic in nature
Many of the animals are adept for locomotion
They reproduce through sexual mode of reproduction
Eg- insects , animals , humans , birds
