Symmetry in geometry refers to a balanced arrangement of parts that are identical in shape, size, and

position. There are two main types of symmetry:

 Line symmetry (Reflection symmetry): A figure has line symmetry if one half of the figure is a
mirror image of the other half when folded along a line.

 Rotational symmetry: A figure has rotational symmetry if it can be rotated around a central
point by an angle and still look the same.

Types of Symmetry

1. Line Symmetry: A figure has line symmetry if it can be divided into two identical halves by a line
(axis of symmetry).

2. Rotational Symmetry: A figure has rotational symmetry if it can be rotated around a point and
still look the same at specific angles (e.g., 90°, 180°, 360°).

Exercises

Section A: Identifying Line Symmetry

1. How many lines of symmetry does a square have?

2. Draw a figure with exactly 2 lines of symmetry.

3. Which of the following shapes have line symmetry? (Circle, Equilateral Triangle, Rectangle,
Scalene Triangle, Parallelogram)

4. A shape has 4 lines of symmetry. What is the shape? Draw it.

5. How many lines of symmetry does a regular hexagon have? Draw it.

Section B: Identifying Rotational Symmetry

6. How many degrees can you rotate an equilateral triangle and still have it look the same?

7. A shape has rotational symmetry of order 3. What is the smallest angle at which it can be
rotated and look the same?

8. Which of these shapes have rotational symmetry? (Circle, Rectangle, Square, Pentagon,
Octagon)

9. Draw a shape with rotational symmetry of order 2 (it should repeat after half a full rotation, or
180°).

10. How many degrees can you rotate a square and still have it look the same?

Section C: Reflection and Rotational Symmetry in Everyday Objects

11. Draw a butterfly and show its line of symmetry.

12. Draw a clock face (without numbers) and show its rotational symmetry.
13. A flag has a line of symmetry vertically. What does this mean for the design on the flag? Give an
example of a flag with this property.

14. Find 3 objects around you that have line symmetry and 3 that have rotational symmetry.

Section D: Advanced Application

15. A regular octagon has rotational symmetry. What is the order of symmetry of an octagon?

16. A polygon has 5 lines of symmetry. What shape could this be? Draw it.

17. An equilateral triangle has rotational symmetry of order 3. What are the angles at which it looks
the same after rotating?

18. A shape has 8 lines of symmetry. Is it a circle, square, or another polygon? Explain why.

Answers

1. A square has 4 lines of symmetry.

2. Example: An isosceles triangle (draw the shape with two equal sides).

3. Circle, Equilateral Triangle, Rectangle.

4. The shape with 4 lines of symmetry is a square.

5. A regular hexagon has 6 lines of symmetry.

6. You can rotate an equilateral triangle by 120° and still have it look the same.

7. The smallest angle is 120°.

8. Circle, Square, Octagon.

9. Example: A rectangle.

10. A square can be rotated by 90°, 180°, 270°, and 360° to still look the same.

11. A butterfly has a vertical line of symmetry down its middle.

12. The clock face has 360° rotational symmetry (it looks the same every 360°).

13. It means that if the flag is folded along the line, the left and right sides will be identical.

14. Look for objects like a leaf (line symmetry), a clock (rotational symmetry), a wheel (rotational
symmetry).

15. The order of symmetry for an octagon is 8.

16. A regular pentagon has 5 lines of symmetry.

17. The angles are 120°, 240°, and 360°.

18. It is a circle, because a circle has infinite lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry at any
angle.
