SLIP TEST – 2 (Electric Potential & Capacitance)
SECTION- A (1mark)
1. A positively charged particle is released from rest in a uniform electric field. The electric potential energy of
the charge
(a) remains a constant because the electric field is uniform.
(b) increases because the charge moves along the electric field.
(c) decreases because the charge moves along the electric field.
(d) decreases because the charge moves opposite to the electric field.
2. Assertion: When two conductors charged to different potentials are connected to each other, the negative
charge always flows from lower potential to higher potential.
Reason: In the charging process, there is always a flow of electrons only.
(a)- Both assertion and reason are correct and the reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
(b)- Both assertion and reason are correct and reason is not a correct explanation of assertion.
(c)- Assertion is correct but the reason is incorrect
(c) h- Assertion is incorrect but the reason is correct
3. The field lines of a negative point charge are as shown in the figure. Does the kinetic energy of a small
negative charge increase or decrease in going from B to A?
4. What physical effort is expended when an electric dipole’s equatorial axis is traversed by a test charge q
over a distance of 1 cm?
5. An electric dipole is placed at an angle of 30º to a non-uniform electric field. The dipole will experience
(a) a torque only
(b) a translational force only in the direction of the field
(c) a translational force only in a direction normal to the direction of the field
(d) a torque as well as a translational force
SECTION – B (2 marks)
6. Three identical capacitors each of capacitance 3µF are connected, in turn in series and in parallel
combination to the common source of V volt. Find out the ratio of the energies stored in two configurations.
7. Two charge q1 and q2 are placed 30 cm apart as shown in the figure. A third charge q 3 is moved along the
circular path of radius 40 cm from C to D. The change in the potential energy of the system is q 3(k)/4πϵ0value
of k?
8. Derive the expression for electric potential due to a point charge at a distance r from it . does potential is
scalar or vector. write the SI unit of it.
SECTION – C (3 marks)
9. A dielectric slab of thickness t is kept in between the plates, each of area A of a parallel plate capacitor
separated by a distance d. Derive an expression for the capacitance of this capacitor for t<<d. On charging a
parallel plate capacitor to a potential V, the spacing between the plates is halved, and a dielectric medium of 𝜀
r = 10 is introduced between the plates, without disconnecting the d.c. source. Explain, using suitable
expressions, how the (i) capacitance (ii) electric field and (iii)energy density of the capacitor change
10. (a) Draw equipotential surfaces for (i) an electric dipole and (ii) two identical positive charges placed near
each other.
(b)Derive an expression for the work done in rotating a dipole from the angleθ1 to θ2 in a uniform electric
field . Explain Stable and Unstable equilibrium.
11. (a)Can electrostatic potential at a point be zero, while electric field at that point is not zero? Explain.
(b) Obtain an expression for the work done to dissociate the system of three charges placed at the vertices of
an equilateral triangle of side ‘a’ as shown below
