Welded Stainless Steel Pipes for Liquid Delivery

2000 − 07 − 24 Issue 2000 − 12 −01 Enforcement

Issued by: State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision

GB/T 12771-2000

Foreword

This Standard applies non-equivalently Japanese Industrial Standard JIS G3448-1997  Stainless Steel
Pipes for Common Piping and makes revisions to GB/T 12771-1991  Welded Stainless Steel Pipes for
Liquid Delivery.

Compared with JIS G3448 -1997 standard, this Standard has differences in the respects of the applicable
scope, Grade No., the deviation of sizes, hydrostatic pressure test, delivery state, etc.

The following main technical contents have been revised in this revision of the standard:

 Adjustment has been made to the series of sizes. Some sizes commonly used by the clients have been
added and the sizes that have not been manufactured and ordered for a long time, have been cancelled,
while a part of wall thickness range have been extended.

 More strict requirements have been imposed on the hydrostatic test pressures and quantitative indexes
for grouping batches.

 Selective Grade Nos. and specially required inspection and testing items are added.

 Supplement and modifications have been made to surface quality and the indexes for the flattening test
in an as-welded state.

Both Appendix A and Appendix B to this standard are the appendices of this Standard.

This Standard supersedes GB/T 12771-1991 as from the enforcement date.

This Standard is proposed by the National Bureau of Metallurgical Industry.

This Standard is centrally stewarded by the National Steel Standardization Technical Committee.

This Standard is drafted and written under the responsibilities of Taiyuan Steel & Iron (Group) Corporation.

This Standard is mainly written by Yu Yuan, Tian Xiaoqin, Gao Zongren, Niu Chenmei and Li Tianbao.

The initial issue of this Standard was published in 1991.

points shall not be guaranteed unless they are requested by the client and specified in the contract.

5.5 Process performances

5.5.1 Hydrostatic pressure test

Hydrostatic pressure test shall be performed for steel pipes piece by piece. The testing pressure shall be
calculated using Equation (2), however, the max. testing pressure shall not be greater than 10 MPa, and the
time for holding pressure shall not be less than 5s while no leak and seepage shall occur to the pipe walls.

P= 2
D
Where: P Testing pressure, MPa;

R Stress, 50% of yielding point shall be taken, MPa;

S Nominal wall thickness of steel pipes, mm;

D Nominal outside diameter of steel pipes, mm.

The supplier is allowed to take the place of hydrostatic pressure test with the eddy current test, and the
acceptable class shall comply with Class A specified in GB/T 7735-1995.

It is also possible for the supplier to take the place of hydrostatic pressure test with the other
non-destructive testing methods in accordance with the agreement reached between the supplier and the
client. The testing method and acceptable classes shall be agreed by both parties and specified in the
contract.

5.5.2 Flattening test

Steel pipes shall be subject to the flattening test. Ring shaped specimens shall be taken for the steel pipes
with an outside diameter ≤ 50mm, and C-shaped specimens shall be taken for steel pipes with an outside
diameter of >50mm ~ <200mm. During the test, the weld shall be at a position of 90o in direction of stress,
and the pipes shall be pressed to the 1/3 of outside diameter of steel pipes. Those steel pipes that are not
subjected to heat treatment, shall be pressed to 2/3 of the outside diameter of pipes, and no crack and
rupture is allowed to occur after the pipes are flattened.

Steel pipes with an outside diameter ≥ 200mm shall be subject to the flattening test (see Appendix B). After
flattening, no crack and rupture is allowed to occur.

5.6 Corrosion resistant properties

Steel pipes shall be subject to the corrosion resistant test according to the provisions of GB/T 4334. The
testing methods and requirements shall be agreed through consultations between both parties of the supplier
and the client and specified in the contract.

5.7 Surface quality

Both interior and exterior surfaces of steel pipes shall be smooth, and free of cracks, ruptures, folding,
cold-laps, distortions, over-pickling, residual scales and any other defects that affect the service. The above
mentioned defects shall be removed completely, and the actual wall thickness at the removal point shall not

10
GB/T 12771-2000

be smaller than the permissible negative tolerance for the wall thickness. The light scratches, indentations,
pits, etc. the depth of which do not exceed the negative tolerance of wall thickness, are allowed to exist. It
is not allowed to have separate layers on steel pipes.

Defects such as unfitting of butt joints, undercut, projection, depression, etc., shall not be allowed to be
greater than the permissible deviation of wall thickness. It is allowed to repair the weld defects, however,
hydrostatic pressure test shall be performed after the weld reparation. As for the steel pipes delivered in an
as-heat-treated state, it is also necessary to make the heat treatment again for the repaired weld.

The Max. residual height of welds shall comply with the specifications in Table 9, and the minimum
residual height of welds shall not be lower than the base material. The peak to valley differential value of
welds shall not be greater than 1.5 mm.

Flattening Test of Big Diameter Stainless Steel Welted Pipes

B1. Preparations of specimens

B1.1 One piece of steel pipes shall be taken at random, from a batch of stainless steel pipes to be inspected
to cut a length of 100mm with a chord height (h) being 1/4 of the outside diameter, at one end, in the
direction of the weld, as a specimen. The weld shall be located in the middle of the specimen as shown in

Welds

Fig. B1. Preparations of specimens

B1.2 When cutting the specimen, care shall be taken to prevent damages to the surface of the spacemen and
changing the metal properties by heating or cold working. The edges at cut shall be free of burs.

B2. Testing Procedure:

B2.1 During testing, the specimen shall be placed horizontally between two plates in parallel and a press or
any other means shall be used to flatten the specimen evenly.

B2.2 If the testing temperature is not specified in the contract, the test shall be performed at the ambient
temperature.

B2.3 When there is a dispute, the pressing down rate shall be 20 ~ 50mm/min for the test.
