B) Short Answer Questions: (3 x 5) = 15 Marks
1. Who created the metric system and why?
Ans: The metric system was created by the French in 1790 to bring about a standard
system of measurements. Up until then different people used different measures. For
example, to measure distance units such as cubits, paces, foot, yard, etc. were used. Each
had a different value and therefore there was no uniformity in measurement. Moreover, the
value of each would change depending on the individual measuring. Thus, to ensure
uniformity of measurements across different lands irrespective of the size of the
individual, the French introduced the metric system.

2. The distance from Meena’s house to the playground is 20 paces. If one pace is equal
to 40 cm, what is the distance in SI units?
Ans: Distance from Meena’s house to playground = 20 paces
1 pace = 40 cm
Therefore, 20 paces = 20 x 40 = 800 cm
100 cm = 1 m
Therefore, 800 cm = 8 m
Thus distance from Meena’s house to playground in SI units = 8m

3. Keith requires 5.6 yards of cloth to get a suit stitched. What length of cloth does he
require in metres if 1 yard is 0.9 metres?
Ans: Keith requires 5.6 yards of cloth
1 yard = 0.9 m
Therefore, 5.6 yards = 5.6 x 0.9 = 5.04 m
Thus, Keith requires 5.04 m of cloth

4. The length of the blackboard in Ajay’s class is 4.5 cubit. What is its length in SI units
if 1 cubit= 45.72 cm?
Ans: Length of the blackboard in Ajay’s class = 4.5 cubit
1cubit = 45.72 cm
Therefore, length of the blackboard = 4.5 x 45.72 = 205.74 cm
100 cm = 1 m

Therefore, length of the blackboard = 205.74/100 = 2.05 m
Thus, length of the blackboard in Ajay’s class in SI units = 2.05 m

5. What were some of the early units of measurement of distances?

Ans: Some of the early units of measurements were:
i) Finger widths: This was distance measured using the thickness or width of a person’s
fingers.
ii) Length of a foot: Distance measured with reference to length of a foot.
iii) Cubit: Distance measured from elbow to fingertips.
iv) Yard: Distance measured from end of outstretched arm to the chin
v) Pace: Length of a pace or step
vi) Angul/mutthi/length of forearm: Measurement based on size of the corresponding
body part like finger, fist or forearm.

C) Long Answer Questions: (5 x 3) = 15 Marks

1. What are the different types of motion? Explain with examples.
Ans: There are three different types of motions:
a) Rectilinear motion: In this type of motion an object keeps moving in a straight line.
The direction may change in between but the object keeps moving in a straight line.
Examples: car moving on a straight road, aeroplane flying, ball rolling on the ground, etc.
b) Circular motion: In this type of motion the object keeps moving in a circular manner.
The object shows motion but the distance between the object and the origin does not
change. Examples: Hands of a clock, blades of a fan, blades of the windmills, etc.
c) Periodic Motion: In this type of motion an object repeats motion in a periodic manner.
The object completes a similar motion over and over again periodically. Examples:
Movement of a swing, playing of a drum, etc.

2. Compare rectilinear motion with circular motion.

Ans:
Rectilinear Motion Circular Motion
Motion of an object in a straight line Motion of an object along a circular
path

If the object is moving at same speed it Even if the object is moving at the
shows no acceleration or increase in speed same speed, the object shows
acceleration due to the constantly
changing directions
Moving car, bus, aeroplane Windmill blades, fan blades,
hammer throw

3. Classify the following as circular, periodic or rectilinear motion:

Playing a mridangam, Carousel, Swing, Speed boat racing ahead, 100m dash, Shuttlecock
during a game of badminton, weather vane, rocking chair, penalty kick in a game of
football, aeroplane during take-off.
Ans:
Playing a mridangam Periodic motion
Carousel Circular and periodic motion
Swing Periodic motion
Speed boat racing ahead Rectilinear motion
100m dash Rectilinear motion
Shuttlecock during a game of badminton Periodic motion
Weather vane Circular motion
Rocking chair Periodic motion
Penalty kick in a game of football Rectilinear motion
Aeroplane during take off Rectilinear motion
