Foreword
The 2nd edition of DIN Handbook 45 again includes nearly 80 DIN Standards.
It contains all basic standards for threads for general use, and additionally all thread stand-
ards for specific areas like:
– mining,
– electrical engineering,
– optics and precision mechanics,
– pipelines,
– rail transport and
– packaging.
The focal point of standardization activities during recent years was the revision of the
standards DIN 13-50 “ISO general purpose metric screw threads – Part 50: Combination
of tolerance classes for formed internal screw threads”, DIN 13-52 “ISO general purpose
metric screw threads – Part 52: Multi-start thread tolerances and deviation of profile”,
DIN 8140-3 “Wire thread inserts for ISO metric screw threads – Part 3: Gauges and gauge
sizes” as well as the adoption of the latest version of ISO 965-1 “ISO general purpose
metric screw threads – Tolerances – Part 1: Principles and basic data” as DIN ISO 965-1.
All these revised standards are included in this handbook.
In addition, one correction was necessary, namely for DIN 8140-2 “Wire thread inserts for
ISO metric screw threads – Part 2: Helical coil threads for inserts, thread tolerances” which
is also included in this handbook.

About this DIN Handbook
How do I use this DIN Handbook?
With this compilation you not only have all the essential standards on a particular subject
in one volume, you have also saved considerably on the cost of purchasing each standard
individually, for the full text of each standard is reproduced in A5 format. Many DIN
Handbooks are also available as eBooks – see inside cover for more information.
Although DIN Handbooks represent the state of technology at the time of their publication,
the current edition of each standard is authoritative. To find out if a new edition of a
standard has been published go to the Beuth webshop at www.beuth.de.
The use of any standard is voluntary, unless it has been referred to in a private contract
or agreement, or in a law or regulation. Reference to standards in legislation can prevent
legal disputes because they set out unambiguous specifications.

Which DIN Standards are available in English?

Although most DIN Standards are published in German (some are issued as bilingual
editions, a few in English only), over 18,000 DIN Standards are available in English
translation, including DIN EN Standards, DIN ISO Standards, and DIN EN ISO Standards.
In addition to printed translations of DIN Standards, Beuth also sells unrevised manuscript
translations in English, French, Spanish and other languages.

What are DIN Standards?

DIN, the German Institute for Standardization, develops standards and specifications as
a service to industry, the state and society as a whole. By agreement with the German
Federal Government DIN is the acknowledged national standards body that represents
German interests in European and international standards organizations.
DIN Standards are technical standards representing the state of technology as determined
in a consensus-based process organized by DIN, and lay down general and/or detailed
requirements for products, procedures and services.
DIN Standards can be either national standards, or adoptions of European and/or
International standards. Their origin – and thus their area of application – is indicated
using one of the abbreviations shown below:
DIN (plus number, e.g. DIN 4701)
This is a national standard that has been developed at national level only and is primarily
of interest nationally. It may also be a precursor to a document intended to be published
internationally. The number for a draft national standard is preceded by an “E” (for
“Entwurf”) while that for a prestandard is preceded by a “V” (for “Vornorm”).
National standards with electrotechnical relevance are indicated as “DIN VDE” standards
(e.g. DIN VDE 0100).

DIN EN (plus number, e.g. DIN EN 71)

This is a European Standard that has been adopted, unchanged, at national level and
which has been developed by one of the European standards organizations: CEN,
CENELEC or ETSI. As a member of CEN/CENELEC, DIN is obliged to adopt all European
Standards and to withdraw any national standards that might conflict with them.

DIN EN ISO (plus number, e.g. DIN EN ISO 306)

This is a European Standard that is identical to an International Standard (i.e. it was
developed by ISO and then adopted by CEN) and has been adopted, unchanged, at
national level. As a member of CEN/CENELEC, DIN is obliged to adopt all European
Standards and to withdraw any national standards that might conflict with them.

DIN ISO, DIN IEC or DIN ISO/IEC (plus number, e.g. DIN ISO 720)
This is an International Standard which has been adopted, unchanged, at national level.

DIN SPEC (DIN Specification)

DIN has introduced a new standards deliverable that is developed in a less formal and
more flexible process – the “DIN SPEC”, or “DIN Specification”.
Because they do not require the full consensus of all stakeholders, DIN SPECs can be
published within a few months. Reaching the market faster, DIN SPECs provide a head
start that can push the knowledge and technology transfer of innovations. DIN SPECs are
developed according to one of four different procedures: the PAS, Prestandard, Technical
Report or CWA procedure.
In addition, other types of document correct or supplement existing DIN Standards:

DIN Supplements give additional information on a DIN Standard (explanatory notes,

examples, advice on the application of the standard, etc.) but no further specifications.

Amendments (indicated as A1, A2 etc. after the main standard number) add information
to the standard, including specifications, that may be incorporated in a later edition.

Corrigenda correct printing or content errors and are incorporated into the next edition
of the respective document.

(ISO), a comma has been used throughout as the decimal marker.

Foreword
This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Gewinde of the Normenausschuß Technische
Grundlagen (Fundamentals in Technology Standards Committee).
The adoption of a number of ISO Standards (e.g. ISO 724, ISO 965 series) as national standards led the
responsible committee to revise the DIN 13 series of standards. The nominal sizes are now based both on
the basic dimensions specified in DIN ISO 724 and on the nominal profiles specified in DIN 13-19. The
nominal sizes of the external thread minor diameters specified here have been calculated taking the root
radius as being equal to H/6.
The thread designation is to be found in DIN ISO 965-1. See the table in the Explanatory notes for an overview
of DIN and DIN ISO Standards for screw threads.

Amendments
This standard differs from the December 1986 edition in that the nominal sizes are now to be calculated on
the basis of DIN 13-19 and size 7 mm threads have been assigned to series 2 (cf. table 1).

This standard applies to general purpose ISO metric screw threads. It specifies the nominal sizes for 1 mm
to 68 mm diameter coarse pitch threads having the basic profile specified in DIN ISO 68-1 and the nominal
profile specified in DIN 13-19.

4 Dimensions and designation

Nominal sizes shall be as shown in figure 1 and given in table 1. Choose series 1 diameters, series 2 diameters,

Explanatory notes
Specifications in International Standards on ISO metric screw threads are no longer incorporated into the
standards of the DIN 13 series. Instead, the ISO Standards themselves are adopted as national standards (i.e.
DIN ISO Standards), while specifications of solely national relevance will continue to be published in the DIN 13
series.

This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Gewinde of the Normenausschuß Technische
Grundlagen (Fundamentals in Technology Standards Committee).
The adoption of a number of ISO Standards (e.g. ISO 724, ISO 965 series) as national standards led the
responsible committee to revise the DIN 13 series of standards. The nominal sizes are now based both on
the basic dimensions specified in DIN ISO 724 and on the nominal profiles specified in DIN 13-19. The
nominal sizes of the external thread minor diameters specified here have been calculated taking the root
radius as being equal to H/6.
The thread designation is to be found in DIN ISO 965-1. See the table in the Explanatory notes of DIN 13-1
for an overview of DIN and DIN ISO Standards for screw threads.

Amendments
This standard differs from the December 1986 edition in that the nominal sizes are now to be calculated on
the basis of DIN 13-19 and size 7 mm threads have been assigned to series 2 (cf. table 1).

4 Dimensions and designation

Nominal sizes shall be as shown in figure 1 and given in table 1. Choose series 1 diameters, series 2 diameters,
or series 3 diameters (in order of preference).
Screw threads with series 4 diameters are for special industrial applications only.
Basic dimensions shall be as specified in DIN ISO 724, tolerances as in DIN ISO 965-1 and limits of size as in
DIN 13-21 to DIN 13-23.

4 Dimensions and designation

Nominal sizes shall be as shown in figure 1 and given in table 2. Choose series 1 diameters, series 2 diameters,
or series 3 diameters (in order of preference).
Screw threads with series 4 diameters are for special industrial applications only.
Basic dimensions shall be as specified in DIN ISO 724, tolerances as in DIN ISO 965-1 and limits of size as in
DIN 13-21 to DIN 13-25.

Foreword
This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Gewinde of the Normenausschuß Technische
Grundlagen (Fundamentals in Technology Standards Committee).
The adoption of a number of ISO Standards (e.g. ISO 724, ISO 965 series) as national standards led the
responsible committee to revise the DIN 13 series of standards. The nominal sizes are now based both on
the basic dimensions specified in DIN ISO 724 and on the nominal profiles specified in DIN 13-19. The
nominal sizes of the external thread minor diameters specified here have been calculated taking the root
radius as being equal to H/6.
The thread designation is to be found in DIN ISO 965-1. See the table in the Explanatory notes of DIN 13-1
for an overview of DIN and DIN ISO Standards for screw threads.

Amendments
This standard differs from the December 1986 edition in that the nominal sizes are now to be calculated on
the basis of DIN 13-19.

This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Gewinde of the Normenausschuß Technische
Grundlagen (Fundamentals in Technology Standards Committee).
The adoption of a number of ISO Standards (e.g. ISO 724, ISO 965 series) as national standards led the
responsible committee to revise the DIN 13 series of standards. The nominal sizes are now based both on
the basic dimensions specified in DIN ISO 724 and on the nominal profiles specified in DIN 13-19. The
nominal sizes of the external thread minor diameters specified here have been calculated taking the root
radius as being equal to H/6.
The thread designation is to be found in DIN ISO 965-1. See the table in the Explanatory notes of DIN 13-1
for an overview of DIN and DIN ISO Standards for screw threads.

Amendments
This standard differs from the December 1986 edition in that the nominal sizes are now to be calculated on
the basis of DIN 13-19.

1 Scope
This standard applies to general purpose ISO metric screw threads. It specifies the nominal sizes for 3 mm fine
pitch threads with diameters from 28 mm to 300 mm having the basic profile specified in DIN ISO 68-1 and the
nominal profile specified in DIN 13-19.

4 Dimensions and designation

Nominal sizes shall be as shown in figure 1 and given in table 1. Choose series 1 diameters, series 2 diameters,
or series 3 diameters (in order of preference). Screw threads with series 4 diameters are for special industrial
applications only.
Basic dimensions shall be as specified in DIN ISO 724, tolerances as in DIN ISO 965-1 and limits of size as in
DIN 13-22 to DIN 13-26.
