Drugs are chemicals that alter function of living system. Usually it is given for
diagnosis, prevention and control or cure of diseases.it can be either the primary
therapy or an adjunctant to another modality(the use of anesthesia in patients
under going surgery.the aspect of drug is not limited to its therapeutic use.it also
include toxic substance that can cause disruption and chemicals used for
pleasure that has ability of causing addiction such as:cocaine, khat and etc.
It is obtained from minerals,animals,plants,microorganisms,synthetic source and
genetic engineering .Drugs mechanisms of action are shown by two terms of
pharmacology subfield such as:Pharmacodynamics: The study of the biological
and therapeutic effects of drugs (i.e, “what the drug does to the body”) and
Pharmacokinetics: Study of the absorption, distribution metabolism and
excretion (ADME) of drugs (“i.e what the body does to the drug”).it has different
route of administration like OA,IV,ANAL and so on.
Drugs also have adverse effect like it have its own function.Side effects are infact
pharmacological effects produced with therapeutic dose of the drug. e.g: Dryness
of mouth with atropine which is troublesome in peptic ulcer patients and useful
when used as a preanaesthetic medication. there are many terms related with
drugs function such as:Pharmacotherapeutics: It deals with the proper selection
and use of drugs for the prevention and treatment of disease
Chemotherapy: It’s the effect of drugs upon microorganisms, parasites and
neoplastic cells living and multiplying in living organisms
Pharmacopoeia: An official code containing a selected list of the established
drugs and medical preparations with descriptions of their physical properties and
tests for their identity, purity and potency.
Drug also has different names such as: Chemical Name: a description of that drug
using the nomenclature of chemistry (IUPAC),: Generic name: Proposed by the
company that first developed the drug and approved by international body. And
Trade name: Are the names under which a drug is marketed (manufacturer
name). Generally drugs has both Adavantages and drawback in our daily life, so
we have to use carefully.
