‘HIV’ refers to Human Immune Deficiency Virus while ‘AIDS’ stands for Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome. ‘HIV’ attacks and destroys the infection-fighting cells of human
being. The loss of these cells makes it difficult for the body to fight infections and certain
cancers. Without treatment, ‘HIV’ can gradually destroy the immune system and advance to
‘AIDS’.
‘HIV’ is spread through contact with certain body fluids from a person with ‘HIV’ infection.
These body fluids include: blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids and
breast milk. ‘HIV’ is spread mainly by having sex with or sharing drug injection equipment with
someone who has ‘HIV’ infection. Mother-to-child transmission is the most common way that
children become infected with ‘HIV’.
To reduce the risk of ‘HIV’ infection, people are counseled to use condoms correctly and
consistently during sex, limit number of sexual partners and never share drug injection
equipment.
One cannot get ‘HIV’ from contact with objects such as dishes, toilet seats, or doorknobs
used by an infected person or by shaking hands or hugging an infected person. Neither can ‘HIV’
be contacted through the air or through mosquito, tick, or other insect bites. Within two to four
weeks after a person becomes infected with ‘HIV’, they may have flu-like symptoms, such as
fever, chills, or rash.
Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is the use of medicines to treat ‘HIV’ infection. (ART)
prevents ‘HIV’ from multiplying and reduces the amount of the virus in the body. This protects
the immune system and prevents ‘HIV’ infection from advancing to ‘AIDS. Antiretroviral
Therapy cannot cure ‘HIV’, but it can help people infected with ‘HIV’ live longer and healthier
lives. ‘ART’ also reduces the risk of ‘HIV’ transmission.
