Perhaps our speakers could give us a glimpse into a typical day in the life of a
house officer in this rotation. (All perspective)

time as one? (Dr.Azmi and Ms Marjmin)
- If u had to go back to younger self just stepping into the surgery rotation
during Housman, what’s once piece of advice you with give to yourself
- Whats the one thing in particular that made you flip and go like I wanna
become a surgeon
- What should pre-house officers or medical students focus on studying or
practising during medical school to better prepare for their General Surgery
rotation during housemanship? (Dr.Hisham)
- Is it true that house officers in the General Surgery posting spend more time
managing ward patients and clerical tasks than in the operating theatre?
(Dr.Azmi and Dr.Hisham)
- Whats a common flaw u see in housemens when they approach this posting
- If so, how can they make the most of their time to develop and refine their
surgical skills during this rotation? (All)
- If Im a medical student or I’m already in Housman and I’ve fixed my mind on
pursuing surgical career and really want to secure a masters programme
what are some steps we can take to have a more competitive edge to get that

First of all, thank you so much for being with us today as we aim to prepare our
aspiring housemen for success in their surgical rotations.

Perhaps let’s delve into the first question…

1. Orthopaedics
● Warm-up Question: Could you share your housemanship experience and
what it was like during your time as a house officer?

● We have been told that Dr. Norliyana has been incharge of handling house
officers in HCTM. What is expected of house officers in the Orthopaedics
Department?
● Perhaps our Miss Liyana could give us a glimpse into a typical day in the life of
a house officer in this rotation. (Dr.Iffah) + Miss norliyana can add on

● How do you feel the role of a house officer has evolved compared to your
time as one? (Prof Sabarul)
● What steps can pre-house officers take to better prepare themselves before
starting their Orthopaedics rotation? (ask this question to both the doctors
then naturally ask what preparation that Dr.Iffah did when she entered ortho)

● Whats a common flaw you see in housemens when they approach

Orthopaedic posting?

● Housemanship can often feel intimidating, especially when we hear about the
demanding and hectic lifestyle that house officers face. The challenge lies not
only in managing the workload but also in finding a balance between work,
study, leisure, and staying motivated throughout the posting. So, how can we
navigate this balance and ensure we remain focused, refreshed, and inspired
throughout our housemanship? (ask Dr.Iffah)

● There’s a common perception that many house officers today focus more on
clerical tasks than on learning orthopaedic hands-on skills. Do you think this is
true in the orthopaedics department? (Dr. Norliyana)

● How can house officers maximise their time in the Orthopaedic department
to learn essential surgical skills? (both, give Prof Sabarul First)

● Many in the audience today are most likely interested in pursuing a career in
surgery, perhaps even the field of orthopaedics. What advice would you give
them on making the most of their housemanship to enhance their prospects
of getting into a master’s programme? (both)

Optional Question:
● For those considering a surgical career, would you recommend taking MRCS
Part 1 before or after housemanship? How might this benefit their journey?

[Ask a min of 5 questions, 7 questions will be prepared depending on the time as we

have 50 minutes include 5 minute QnA]
