Semi-detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

NAME: Nurshaira T. Jaman LEVEL: Junior High School

I. General Objectives
A. Content standard: demonstrates understanding of key concepts, uses and
importance of statistics, data collection/gathering and the different forms of
data presentation, measures of central tendency, measures of variability and
probability.
B. Learning competency:
(a) Illustrate the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) of
statistical data (M7SP-lVf-1); and
(b) Calculates the measures of central tendency of ungrouped data (M7SP-
IVf-g-1)

Specific objectives
At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:
(a) Define mean, median, and mode;
(b) Find the mean, median and mode of a statistical data: and
(c) Show appreciation to the value of mean, median, and mode in real life
situation.
(d)
II. Subject matter
A. Topic: measures of central tendency of ungrouped data
B. Reference: Manalo, C., et al. (2012). Next Century Mathematics 7
C. Materials: PowerPoint graphics, laptop, interactive screen, paper and pen

III. Preparatory activities

A. Daily routine
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of the cleanliness of the classroom
4. Checking of attendance

B. Review
What was our lesson last meeting?
What is central tendency?
What are the types of central tendency?
IV. Lesson proper
a. MOTIVATION
(The student will be grouped to 3)
4-PICS-ONE-WORD Game

ANSWER: MIDDLE ANSWER: FREQUENT ANSWER: SUM

b.
ACTIVITY 1.1 (ANSWER ME)
(The student will be going to answer 3 easy questions in the given
information)
The set of data shows the grades of top 7 grade 7 students in their 1 st
quarter exam in mathematics.
88, 90, 93, 93, 93, 94, 94

1. What grade is typical to the group of students?

2. What grade appears to be in the middle?
3. What grade frequently appears?

ACTIVITY 1.2 (GUESS THE WORD)

c. ANALYSIS
ACTIVITY 1.1
1. What grade is typical to the group of students? 92.14
2. What grade appears to be in the middle? 93
3. What grade frequently appears? 93

ACTIVITY 1.2
MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY FOR UNGROUPED DATA
 MEAN (ARITHMETIC MEAN)
 MEDIAN
 MODE

MEAN (ARITHMETIC MEAN) – µ

 Arithmetic mean – is computed by summing all the values of the variable in the data
set divided by the number of observations.
∑x
µ=
N
where: x is the sum of all data points
N is the number of data points
 It is the average of a set of numbers

Example : the building permits issued last month to 12 construction forms in Amadeo
was 2, 6, 0, 6, 10, 3, 0, 14, 2, 4, 7, and 6. Compute the mean.
∑x
µ=
N
µ=2+6+0+6+10+3+0+14+2+4+7+6
12
=60
12
µ=5
MEDIAN - Md
 The middle value when the data points are arranged in ascending order.

Example: 16, 18, 17, 20, 19, 21, 22

16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22,
Md= 19
Example: 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Md= 19.5
MODE -Mo
 Is the value which occurs most frequently in a set of measurements or values. In
other words, it is the most popular value in a given set.
Types of modes
1. No modal- a data having equal frequency of observations
2. Unimodal- a data having one mode
3. Bimodal- a data having two modes
4. Multimodal- a data having more than two modals
Example: find the mode and determine the types of mode
1. The ages of five students are 17, 18, 23, 20 and 19. (no modal)
2. The following are the descriptive evaluations of five teachers: VS, S, VS, VS, O.
(VS, unimodal)
3. The grades of five students are: 4.0, 3.5, 4.0, 3.5, and 1.0. (4.0 and 3,5,
bimodal)
4. The weight of five students in pounds 117, 218, 233, 120, and 117. (117,
unimodal)

d. ABSTRACTION
1. What is mean?
2. How do you find or compute mean?
3. What is median?
4. What is mode?
e. APPLICATION
Compute the mean, median and mode.
James obtained the following grades in his five subjects for the 2 nd
grading period.
90, 86, 88, 87, 87
µ= 87.6 Md=87 Mo=87

V. Assessment
Compute for the mean, median and. Find the mode

VI. Assignment
Compute for the mean, median. And find the mode
Ms. Sulit collects the data on the ages of the mathematics teacher in Santa
Rosa School, and her study yields the following:
38, 35, 28, 36, 35, 33, 40
