ASSIGNMENT II Date of Assignment 2 September 2024
Sub: Air & Noise Pollution Sub Code: EN 512
Last date of submission: 13/9/24 Max Marks : 30

Q.1 An oil pipeline leak results in emission of l00g/h of H 2S. On a very 03

sunny summer day, with a wind speed of 3.0 m/s, what will be the
concentration of H2S 1.5 km directly downwind from the leak?
Q. 2 A coal-burning electric generating plant emits 1.1 kg/min of SO 2 from a 03
stack with an effective height of 60m. On a thinly overcast evening,
with a wind speed of 5.0 m/s , what will be the ground level
concentration of SO2 500 m directly downwind from the stack?
Q.3 A power plant has a stack with a diameter of 2 m and emits gases with 03
a stack exit velocity of 15 m/s and a heat emission rate of 4,800 kJ/S.
The wind speed is 5 m/s . Stability is neutral. Estimate the plume rise.
If the stack has a geometric height of 40 m, what is the effective stack
height?
Q.4 Using the data of question 2, and assuming that the emission consists 03
of particles 10 µm in diameter and having a density of 1 g/cm3,
calculate (1) the ambient ground level concentration at 200 m
downwind along the plume centerline, and (2) the deposition rate at that
point. The viscosity of the air is 0.0185 g/m-s at 25°C.
Q. 5 Compare WHO 2021 Air Pollutants guidelines with the CPCB 2009 03
Indian Standards of Air Pollutants with focus on Status of Air Pollution
in Indian Cities.
Q.6 While PM2.5 & PM 10 are different size fractions in air pollution, in some 03
indoor environment we see same mass concentrations of both
pollutants using sensor based technique of measurement. Explain it.
Q.7 “Synergistic effects of many air pollutants has been much more 04
dangerous to human health” , explain this sentence with few examples
or studies done in field/industry.
Q.8 Explain the chemical equations involved during the formation of Ozone 04
as well as photochemical smog.
Q.9 “ Size of particulate matter in air pollution is related to their sources” 04
justify this statement with few examples giving formation chemistry of
particulate matter as well as their related sources.
