Relay
Automotive relays is basically a switch to turn on or shut off a 12v power supplying heavy loads
eg. head lights, engine starter has a solenoid which works on the same principle as a relay.
the relay has a stationary coil wound on a hollow piece of steel. Inside the hole is another steel
plunger which slides easily in the hole. There is a spring inserted on the plunger so that when the
coil is not energized the plunger is pushed away. On the end of the plunger is a plate with
contacts, or movable contacts. Correspond to these are stationary contacts. When the coil is
energized with 12vdc, the steel part under the coil becomes a electromagnet. This pulls the steel
plunger into the hole and closes the contacts which supply the 12vdc to the load of high current.
Horn circuit
Horn switch is released.
Q3) Explain the role of diodes in a car's alternator. How do diodes help
convert AC to DC?
In a car alternator, diodes play a crucial role in converting alternating current (AC)
generated by the alternator into direct current (DC), which is used to charge the car
battery and power the vehicle's electrical systems. Here's a more detailed breakdown of
their function:
Although all vehicles rely on electric connectors, not all connectors are the same. The
use of incompatible electrical connectors can result in serious dangers, from electrical
fires to damage to the vehicle. This can mean significant financial losses for
manufacturers and potential consumer harm in the automotive industry.
This blog post explores the risks of using incompatible electrical connectors so you can
ensure the safety and functionality of your vehicle’s electrical systems.
Compatibility issues can also arise when you install connectors with voltage levels that
are incompatible with the rest of your vehicle’s system. Connecting a higher-voltage
connector to a lower-voltage system can lead to overheating, short circuits, and other
electrical complications. On the other hand, using a low-voltage connector in a high-
voltage system can result in malfunctions and damage to the vehicle’s electrical
components.
Moreover, wires that are not securely enclosed within their connectors can easily
come into contact with other wires or conductive surfaces. This can result in short
circuits, intense heat, and sparks.
OVERHEATING
Poor connections resulting from incompatible connectors can introduce high
resistance points within an electrical circuit. High resistance points impede the
flow of electrical currents, causing the energy to convert into heat. If electric
components overheat in a car, there’s a major fire risk.
PRO TIP
While aftermarket goods may be cheaper, you should only use original
equipment manufacturer (OEM). When producing OEM connectors for
automotive wiring, manufacturers must follow strict safety and quality standards.
Installing the incorrect connector may lead to excess current flowing through a
component, causing it to overheat and burn out. Incompatible connectors can
also cause voltage drops, reducing the efficiency of connected devices.
WHY IT MATTERS
Nearly all areas of a vehicle, from the engine control module to the headlights,
rely on electrical circuits for operation. Damage to one of these circuits can result
in poor performance or system failure.
The risks of using incompatible connectors are too significant to ignore. Follow
these tips to help you choose the right connectors for your vehicle:
Once you remove the damaged connector from the vehicle, count the number of
pins on the component. Take an accurate count, as misidentifying the number of
pins can lead to ordering the wrong connector.
Although you can use a connector with more pins than wires, you should never
use one with too few terminals. Each wire must connect to a pin, as it would
otherwise be exposed and could create many dangers.
Moreover, the manual will provide valuable information on the vehicle make,
model, and year. You’ll need to buy a connector that matches these details and
is for the same area of the car. For instance, if you need to replace the connector
for the headlights in a 2020 Jeep Renegade, shop according to those details.
Q5) Research one emerging technology in automotive electronics (e.g.,
LiDAR, V2X communication, over-the-air updates). Describe how this
technology may influence vehicle performance, safety, and user
experience?
LiDAR systems are known for their accuracy and high object detection precision, making
them an indispensable tool for autonomous driving. Unlike cameras that rely on visible
light and can face difficulties under certain conditions such as low light or direct sunlight,
LiDAR sensors provide reliable data across various lighting and weather conditions.
Additionally, LiDAR’s ability to measure distances accurately allows it to detect objects,
their size, and even their speed, which is crucial for navigating complex driving
scenarios.
The principle behind LiDAR is based on Time of Flight (ToF). It involves emitting laser
pulses and calculating the time it takes for these pulses to reflect off obstacles. This
method produces highly accurate “point cloud” data, capable of creating detailed 3D
maps of the vehicle’s surroundings with centimeter-level precision, offering cars an
exceptionally accurate spatial recognition ability.
LiDAR technology in the automotive industry focuses on enhancing driving safety and
advancing autonomous driving technologies. Key applications include:
Current LiDAR devices on the market are mainly available in 905 nm and 1550 nm/1535
nm wavelengths, but in terms of cost, 905 nm holds an advantage.
905 nm LiDAR: In general, 905 nm LiDAR systems are less expensive due to the
wide availability of components and mature manufacturing processes associated
with this wavelength. This cost advantage makes 905 nm LiDAR attractive for
applications where range and eye safety are less critical.
1550/1535 nm LiDAR: Components of 1550/1535 nm systems, such as lasers
and detectors, tend to be more costly, partly because the technology is less
widespread and the components are more complex. However, the safety and
performance benefits may justify the higher cost in some applications, particularly
in autonomous driving where long-range detection and safety are critical.
