Dc Machine Problem Set-1
Dc Machine Problem Set-1
1. A 500 V d.c. shunt motor has armature and field resistances of 1.2 Ω and 500 Ω
respectively. When running on no-load, the current taken is 4 A and the speed is 1000 r.p.m.
Calculate the speed when motor is fully loaded and the total current drawn from the supply is
26 A. Estimate the speed at this load if (a) a resistance of 2.3 Ω is connected in series with
the armature and (b) the shunt field current is reduced by 15%.
2. A 60 hp, 230 V dc shunt motor has armature resistance of 0.5 ohm and field circuit resistance
of 46 ohm. The no-load speed is 1000rpm. Find the speed when line current is (a) 75A, (b)
150A. Assume that the motor has compensating winding (means no distortion in field flux).
3. A 240 V, series motor has a resistance of 0.2 ohm. When the line current is 40 A, speed is
1800 rpm. Find the resistance to be added in series with the motor, (a) to limit the speed to
3600 rpm when line current is 10 A [Assume that between line currents of 10 A, and 40 A, flux
is proportional to current]; (b) to make the motor run at 900 rpm when line current is 60A
[Assume that flux at 60 A is 1.18 times the flux at 40 A]. (c) Find the speed of motor when it
is connected directly to the mains and the line current is 60 A.
4. A 35 hp, 230 V dc series motor has armature resistance of 0.07 ohm, series field resistance
of 0.08 ohm and brush voltage drop of 2V. When the line current is 95A, speed is 700 rpm.
Find (a) speed when line current is 130A, (b) speed when the line current is 130 A and a diverter
having a resistance of 0.08 ohm is connected across the field. Assume that the flux is
proportional to line current.
5. A 250 V dc shunt motor has a field resistance of 125 ohm and armature resistance of 1 ohm.
It takes an armature current of 25 A at a speed of 900 rpm.It is required to increase the speed
to 1100 rpm, keeping the torque constant. Find the additional resistance of field regulator to
achieve this speed. Assume that the magnetic circuit is unsaturated.
6. A 10 b.h.p. (7.46 kW) 200-V shunt motor has full-load efficiency of 85%. The armature has
a resistance of 0.25 Ω. Calculate the value of the starting resistance necessary to limit the
starting current to 1.5 times the full-load current at the moment of first switching on. The shunt
current (field current) may be neglected. Find also the back e.m.f. of the motor, when the
current has fallen to its full-load value, assuming that the whole of the starting resistance is still
in circuit. If the load torque is assumed constant (equal to full load) and full load speed is 1000
rpm, what will be the final speed with the starting resistance?
7. Design a starting resistance for 36.775 kW, 400V, d.c. shunt motor. Full-load efficiency of
the machine is 92%, total Cu losses (armature+field) are 5.5% of the input. Shunt field
resistance is 200 Ω. The maximum current through the armature is to be 1.2 times full-load
value.
