GROUP PROJECT ON SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING

Please read all the following instructions carefully.

This is s group project. The overall grade will be determined by the quality of the
research and analysis, and presentation. See section on Grading Guidelines for
more information.
a. The project requires you to analyse the corporate sustainability practices of the
company assigned to you.
b. You will be informed of the company assigned to you on the specified date.
c. This project will be due on 19 August. There will be no extensions. You are
advised to start your project early and work on relevant areas as instructed.
d. You are only required to submit a soft copy of the presentation slide. It must be in
MS Word format, not pdf format. Use the following naming convention for the soft
copy of your report: Student name_Company name.
e. Diagrams, charts, photos and illustrations may be helpful for making the
presentation more interesting. You must specify the source of any diagrams,
charts, illustrations or photos used if they are taken from an external source.
f. The maximum number of slides are 12 slides (including the title page and the
appendices). You are expected to make a presentation of 12 minutes and 3
minutes for Q&A.
g. Please note the university rules regarding plagiarism. If any material is found to
be used without proper referencing, a zero mark will be awarded.
h. Before you submit, do a spell check and a proper edit of the slides. Make sure all
aspects covered in this document are complied with.

Contents and structure of the slides

A listed company will be assigned to you. The major sources of information for
Preparing your report is the company’s sustainability report, website, news media
reports, and other external sources such as ESG rating providers.

The following structure and contents should be covered in the presentation (to the
extent they are available from the latest annual and sustainability reports;
company website; and other public sources):

About the company

This part should include, among other matters:


• stock exchange(s) on which company is listed, including primary and
secondary listings (if any)
• latest market capitalisation
• primary industry sector(s)
• corporate structure (showing the overall group structure and major
companies within the group)
• ownership structure, such as presence of substantial or controlling shareholders
and distribution of shareholdings.
• Board of directors and senior management
• summary of financial fundamentals such as financial and share price
performance over at least the past 3 years.
Sustainability Frameworks, Practices and Performance

This part should include, among other matters:


• the sustainability reporting frameworks adopted by the company
• the sustainability governance structure of the company.
• whether the company discloses that it has conducted a materiality assessment of
ESG/sustainability factors, how is it presented, who were involved in the
materiality risk assessment (e.g., the board, whether external stakeholders were
consulted, etc.), and what are the most material factors identified up to 3.
• whether the company discloses how the materiality assessment of ESG factors is
incorporated and linked to the company’s strategies, policies and practices
• whether the company’s sustainability report is aligned with the materiality
assessment (e.g., are the most material ESG factors given the most prominence
in the sustainability report)
• what goals, measures, key performance indicators, metrics, etc. are set for the
material ESG factors, including climate-related ones, and timelines for achieving
them (e.g., net zero by 2030 or 2050)
• whether the company discusses how sustainability/ESG factors are linked to
executive/employee remuneration
• did the company disclose whether there is any assurance provided on the
sustainability report, for example, internal assurance and/or external independent
assurance, and the identity of the parties providing the assurance
• Other sustainability issues such as any positive or negative news reports
relating to the company’s ESG practices, including any criticisms by NGOs,
activists, etc. and how the company fares on external ESG ratings (if any); any
major sustainability initiatives announced by the company; any other issues that
you believe are relevant to the company’s sustainability practices, especially
sustainability governance.

Overall assessment

Create a table using the items stated above to summarize the information you found
using a rating of 1 to 5. Provide your brief overall assessment of the quality of the
sustainability reporting and practices of the company, focusing on strengths and
areas for improvement.
