Project: Construction of a Two Storied Residential Building with additional facilities in a 153ft
by 150ft plot in Kalmegha, Borguna
Project Overview:
The proposed construction project involves the development of a residential house for a family
of five in Kalmegha, Borguna. The plot is on the side of a main road running east-west, and the
house will be accessed via a narrow brick-paved path of 8ft.
The plot will feature several supporting structures in addition to the main house, including a
vegetable garden, two flower gardens, two poultry farms, and a water body (pond). The house
will be a two-storied RCC structure, with each floor containing two bedrooms, a toilet, and a
verandah. A staircase will provide access between the floors. To complement the main house, a
separate masonry kitchen will be constructed adjacent to the main building.
Additional amenities include a septic tank system (a cast in-situ septic tank and a pre-cast soak
pit), a tubewell, and a separate toilet for the gardeners and house assistants. The pipe connecting
the house to the septic tank will be designed with a longitudinal slope of 1:100. The water body
which is located on the furthest north of this premise, will have a side slope of 1:3 on all sides,
ensuring stability.
Scope of Work:
As the appointed chief engineer for this construction project, your scope of work encompasses
several key responsibilities. First, you will determine the earthwork excavation requirements for
the entire site, including the main house, auxiliary structures, and the water body, in an
economical manner to present it to your client before the construction project begin.
So, you will be responsible for preparing a cost breakdown for the entire project. This includes
estimating the costs for the main two-storied house, the kitchen, the toilet for the house
assistants, the septic tank system, the tubewell, and the water body.
The project also requires meticulous planning for utilities, drainage, ventilation and landscaping.
The installation of the septic tank system and tubewell will need to be properly coordinated to

ensure efficient waste management and water supply. Landscaping and gardening areas must be
designed to enhance the aesthetic value of the property while ensuring their functionality,
especially the vegetable garden and poultry farms.
You’ll need to implement your judgement in many phases of this construction project. So, if there
is anything unclear or missing, put your judgement before reaching your project managers (in
your case, your course teachers).
Conclusion:
This construction project aims to create a well-balanced living environment that integrates both
the practical needs of the family and sustainable features. The inclusion of water management
systems, agricultural space for growing vegetables, and dedicated facilities for staff will contribute
to a harmonious and functional property. The design elements ensure that the house and its
auxiliary facilities are sustainable and conducive to the family’s well-being and the smooth
operation of daily life.
Special Notes:
1. Refer to the scale provided in the site plan for any missing or unclear dimensions.
2. All formation levels (except for the bottom of the water body) indicated on the site plan
correspond to the surface level.
3. You have to complete the calculation part within the answer script provided to you.
Marking Criteria:
1. Presentation and Report Formatting (20%): Prepare a complete and professional report
(i.e., a cover page with the project name, location, estimated completion time, client
name, and detailing). You can use graphs and charts as necessary.
2. Bill of Quantities and Cost Estimation (55%): You must prepare a comprehensive and
presentable Bill of Quantities that covers both element- and material-wise cost
breakdown. Use schedules from authentic sources such as PWD, LGED, and BWDB (these
must be the latest versions).
3. Comprehensive and Clear Understanding (10%): In each of the sections of the answer
script, you must show a sample calculation and present the summarized result in a table
format including different elements.
4. Brief Cost Commentary (5%): You may provide insightful comments on the costs of
different sections the project.
5. Independent Problem Solving (10%): Solve issues using your own judgment; copying
others will result in a reduction in marks.
