Mark allocations are shown in brackets for time management (1 mark ≈ 1.2 minutes)

1. (a) The line l1 has equation 2x + 3y = 6.

The line l2 is parallel to the line l1 and passes through the point (3, −5).

Find the equation of l2 in the form y = mx + c, where m and c are constants. (4)

(b) The line l1 has equation 10x − 2y + 7 = 0.

(i) Find the gradient of l1 . (1)

(c) The straight line l1 has equation 2y = 3x + 5 and cuts the x-axis at the point A.

(i) State the gradient of l1 . (1)

(ii) Write down the x coordinate of point A. (1)

Another straight line l2 intersects l1 at the point B with x-coordinate 1 and crosses
the x-axis at the point C. Given that l2 is perpendicular to l1 ,

3. Consider the graph of y = g(x), −3 ≤ x ≤ 4 and the line l with equation y = x.
2
The graph of y = g(x) consists of three straight line segments, from P (−3, 4) to Q(0, 4),
from Q(0, 4) to R(2, 0) and from R(2, 0) to S(4, 10).

The line l intersects y = g(x) at the points A and B, where A lies on the line QR
and B lies on the line RS.
(a) Use algebra to find the x coordinate of the point A and the x coordinate of the
point B. Show each step of your working and give your answers as exact fractions. (6)

(b) Sketch the graph with equation

y = g(x), − 3 ≤ x ≤ 4
2
On your sketch show the coordinates of the points to which P , Q, R and S are
transformed. (2)
