GRADE 6 LESSON:15 – WATER AND ITS IMPORTANCE

Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to

• Recall the water resources, states of water and change of state.
• Identify the different states of water.
• Understand the cloud formation and rain in water cycle
• Why is water conservation necessary?

I. Short Answers
Q1. How are clouds formed?
Ans. When the temperature of air increases, it expands This makes the air lighter and it rises in the
atmosphere, taking water vapor with it. As the air rises, it begins to cool. The water vapor condenses on
dust particles present in the atmosphere to form millions of tiny droplets. Tiny ice crystals will be
formed instead if it is very cold. This cluster of tiny water droplets floating in air is what we call a cloud.
Q2. State 3 ways to avoid wastage of water at home?
Ans. a. Take water in a bucket for your bath instead of using the shower. Always remember to shut the
tap tight after each use.
b. Do not leave a tap running while brushing your teeth.
c. Use a wet cloth to clean the car instead of using a hose.

Q3. Explain the formation of water cycle.

Ans. Water droplets in the clouds keep bumping against one another, and sometimes stick to form
bigger drops. When these drops become too heavy to float in the air, they drop down back to the Earth
as rain. The water that comes down as rain, in time, evaporates and goes up to form clouds again. This
leads to the formation of a cycle, known as the water cycle
Q4. Label the following diagram of water cycle.
Ans.
II. Answer the following questions
Q1. What are natural disasters? Explain any 2 natural disasters.
Ans. Unfortunate events brought about by nature—that can have a very strong effect on the lives of
people are called natural disasters. Both drought and flood are natural disasters.
A. FLOOD
A flood can lead to many conditions—disease, starvation, loss of life, and property. A flood also can
have the same effect on the food chain as a drought does.
B. DROUGHT
During drought, rivers run dry, water level in lakes goes down, and even the water in the soil dries up.

Critical Thinking questions/Problem Solving:

1. Alok found many dead fishes on the bank of a water resource near a factory. What is the
possible reason for this? How can it be controlled?
Ans. Many fish near the factory may be dying because of pollution. This pollution can come from
chemicals the factory releases, too many nutrients in the water, or changes in the water's temperature.
To stop this, the factory needs to clean up its waste, follow rules about what it puts in the water, and
take care of the nutrients and temperature in the water.

2. Why is it advisable to water the plants early in the morning or late in the evening?
Ans. The sun is hot during the day and the poured water may evaporate sooner than it does in the
morning or evening

3. Our country is currently facing an acute water crisis. Analyze the effect this phenomenon will
have on our lifestyle.
Ans. When water run dry, people can’t get enough water to drink, food shortage, cannot grow crops,
economic decline may occur, In addition, inadequate sanitation can lead to diseases.
