1) Sketch the standard stress-strain curve for mild steel and tor steel bar under axial tension
and show important points on it.
2) A steel rod is subjected to an axial pull of 25 kN. Find minimum diameter if the stress is not
exceed 100 N/mm2. The length of rod is 2000 mm and take E = 2.1 × 105 N/mm2.

3) A square R.C.C. column of 300 mm × 300 mm in section with 8 steel bars of 20 mm diameter
carries a load of 360 kN. Find the stresses induced in steel and concrete. Take modular ratio =

4) A compound bar having steel rod of dia. 35 mm and solid copper rod of dia. 20 mm and
aluminium square rod of 10 mm is as shown in following figure. Find change in length of bar.

14) In a biaxial stress system, the loads along two directions are 40 N/mm2 tensile (x-direction)
and 50 N/mm2 compressive (y-direction). Find the strains along the two directions. Take E =
200 kN/mm2 and m = 1/4
15) A load of 6 kN is to be raised with the help of steel cable. Determine the minimum diameter
of steel cable if stress is not to exceed 110 N/mm2.
16) A steel bar is 900 mm long; its two ends are 40 mm and 30 mm in diameter and the length
of each part of rod is 200 mm. The middle portion of the bar is 15 mm in diameter and 500 mm
long. If the bar is subjected to an axial tensile load of 15 kN, find its total extension.
17) A R.C.C. column is 300 mm x 300 mm in section. It is provided with 8 bars of 20 mm
diameter. Determine the stresses induced in concrete and steel bars, if it carries a load of 180
kN. Take, Es = 210 GPa, Ec = 14 GPa.

Find the Bulk modulus and lateral contraction of a round bar of 37.5 mm diameter and 2.4 m
length when stretched by 2.5 mm. when subjected to an axial load.
19) A bar having cross-section as given in fig. No.3 is subjected to a tensile load of 150 kN
calculate the change in length of each part along with the total cahnge in length if E = 2 105

20) A reinforced concrete column is 300 mm 300 mm in section, reinforced with 8 bars of
20 mm diameter. The column carries a load of 360 kN. Find the stresses in concrete and steel

35) A force of 30 KN is required to punch a circular hole of 16 mm diameter in a metal plate

stress developed in the metal plate
