CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter comprises the vital information for the process of the study. It shows the

research design to be use, the research sample, the research instrument to be utilized and how

the information will be collected step-by-step together with corresponding statistical tools to

answer the problems of study and interpretations of data for the identification of statistics.

Research Design

The researchers will employ a qualitative research approach to

comprehensively explore and analyze the various factors that contribute to students'

fear and nervousness when speaking English, whether within the classroom setting or

in more public contexts. The study will specifically focus on students from the BSED

- English First Year cohort, gathering in-depth information about their perceptions of

anxiety related to speaking the language. By utilizing qualitative research methods,

the researchers aim to gain a deeper understanding of the nuanced ways in which

these students experience and interpret their anxiety when faced with English

communication tasks.

The qualitative research approach is particularly well-suited for this study as it

allows for a more subjective and detailed examination of students' personal

experiences and feelings. This method of inquiry emphasizes the importance of

context and individual perspective, enabling the researchers to gather rich, descriptive

data through various techniques such as participant observation, in-depth interviews,

and focus group discussions. Each of these methods will provide a platform for

students to openly express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences regarding

language-related anxiety, thus allowing the researchers to capture a broad spectrum of

perspectives.

One of the key strengths of qualitative research is its ability to investigate

complex and multifaceted social phenomena, such as the emotional and psychological

dimensions of anxiety that can affect language learners. By focusing on how students

perceive and internalize these anxieties, the study will contribute valuable insights

into the underlying causes of their fear when speaking English. This includes

examining potential influences such as fear of judgment, self-consciousness about

making mistakes, previous negative experiences, and cultural factors that may

exacerbate these feelings.

The findings from this research will provide critical data that can inform future

interventions or strategies aimed at reducing anxiety among language learners.

Understanding students' perspectives on anxiety will not only shed light on the

specific challenges they face but also offer direction for educators to develop more

effective teaching practices and support systems that address these emotional barriers.

Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the creation of a more supportive and

encouraging learning environment for English language learners, fostering confidence

and promoting better communication skills among students.

Research locale of the study

The respondents in the study entitled “Overcoming anxieties: Building Confidence in

Speaking English” will be the BSED – English First years from Palawan State University

from Quezon Palawan 2024-2025. There will be at least 6 respondents in the said study.

Research Instrument procedure

To assure the reliability and correctness of the data being collected using a qualitative

approach, it is essential to have a well-organized procedure and use specific materials to

ensure the process is smooth, ethical, and efficient. Firstly, we will be asking for the

respondent’s permission, and if the permit is approved then we will proceed to ask questions

about the respondent’s perspective and experiences with relevant to anxiety. While

conducting the survey, we are going to record the detailed information that is given to us, and

allowing us to provide a comprehensive research paper. The researchers used this strategy to

improve the overall quality of the data. Furthermore, the use of recorder made it easier to

gather, manage, and analyze responses in a systematic manner, which added to the study's

robustness.
Data Collection Procedure

Prior to beginning the research project and engaging with the selected

respondents, the researchers took various procedures to assure the process's

effectiveness and ethical integrity. First, they diligently designed the questionnaire,

carefully aligning each question with the study's objectives and obtaining meaningful

and accurate responses. Following that, the researchers obtained informed consent

from the participants by clearly stating the goal of the study and ensuring that their

comments would only be used for academic purposes. They further highlighted that

all information submitted would be kept strictly confidential to preserve the

respondents' privacy.

The questionnaires were then distributed to a total of 38 participants in

physical format. To facilitate quantitative analysis, the survey included rating scales

to allow respondents to express their thoughts, perceptions, or experiences in an

organized way. After all of the participants had finished the survey, the researchers

will gather the completed questionnaires to ensure no data will be lost. The acquired

data was then prepared for additional analysis, which served as a critical foundation

for producing study-relevant insights and findings.

Data Analysis

To demonstrate how students will get over their nervousness and gain confidence

when speaking English, the first set of data will be examined. The information gathered about

the journal's themes and categories is used to analyze this. Furthermore, it will be examined

to see which viewpoints they are unfamiliar with and to assist in implementing fresh, varied

viewpoints.

The impact that the student voices had on the researcher will be examined in the

second batch of data. As the researcher reads through each journal, comments will be made.

The researchers recorded the first thought that occurred to each pupil. These ideas were used

to assess how the students' capacity to impart their knowledge, insights, and guidance on

overcoming fears and boosting confidence in speaking English affected the researchers and

whether it progressed in creating better learning opportunities for all of their students.

Ethical considerations

For ethical research considerations, before the study will be conducted, the respondents will

receive a detailed briefing and key information about the purpose of the study. Through informed

consent, the respondents shall willingly decide to take part in the study. In order to guarantee

anonymity, secrecy, and the avoidance of potential harm, all information will be hold and handled

with the utmost confidentially by not disclosing the names and the identity of the research

participants in accordance with RA 10173, generally known as the data privacy act.
