Theme: Welcome Back to School


Numeracy Lesson Plan
Nursery 1

Week 1: Basic Shapes: Circle


Day 1
Objective(s):
The pupils should be able to:
a) Identify a circle.
b) Trace/Draw a circle.

Materials/Resources:
 Flashcards: picture and word for circle
 Tracing sheets with the shape of circle
 Paints
 Interactive whiteboard or large paper

To prepare before lesson:

Lesson Procedure:

Teacher’s whiteboard Tune in/ 1. Teacher lead the children to form big and small circles to the tune 5 minutes

2. After singing, ask “What did we form together?”
3. Say that circle is a kind of shape.
 Show a flashcard with the picture and word CIRCLE.
 Let the children say the word out loud.

Main Activity 1. Describe CIRCLE – no sides, it goes round and round. 20 minutes
2. Demonstrate how to draw a circle on the board.
3. Let the children draw a circle in the air and have them say the word
“circle” as they draw.
4. Do Finger Tracing – Using the sample tracing worksheet, guide the
children to draw a circle by tracing the dots using washable paint.

Closure Review and Discuss 5 minutes


 After cleaning up, ask the children the following questions:
a. What shape did we learn today?
b. How do you draw a circle? (Have them draw it in the air.)
c. Do you see any circles around?
d. What are the circles you see?
Evaluation of Lesson:

Day 2
Objective(s):
The pupils should be able to:
a) Identify objects that are circle in shape.
b) Give examples of objects that are circle.

Materials/Resources:
 Objects with different shape cutouts in different colors
 Toys with different shapes
 Interactive whiteboard or large paper
 Pocket Chart

To prepare before lesson:


Spread out the cutouts with different shapes around the classroom.
Pocket chart with different cutout objects
Example:

Poster paper with a big circle drawing.

3. Let the children share some of the circle objects they saw in the video.

 Ask the children to go inside the hoola hoop if the object shown is

Objective(s):

a) Identify circles.
b) Sort objects into circle and not circle.

Materials/Resources:
 Cut -out circles (felt)
 Picture patterns
 Glue
 Zip locks (small)

To prepare before lesson:


Cut out circles in different sizes
Picture patterns
Glue
Circle sorting mat

Lesson Procedure:

Felt circles Tune in/ 1. Play Circle Hunt 5 minutes
Zip lock bags Introduction  Hide some felt circles around the classroom.
 Give each child a zip lock bag and find as many circles they could
find.
2. Gather the children after 3 minutes and ask volunteers to share how
many circles they were able to find.

Caterpillar Art Template Main Activity 3. Make a CATERPILLAR ART 20 minutes


 Using the felt circles that the children found, create a caterpillar.
 Glue/paste the felt circles to the caterpillar template.

4. Do the Sorting Activity


 Pair up the children.
 Give each pair a sorting shape mat.
 Let them sort the objects into circle and not circle.

Closure Teach the rhyme below to the tune of “London Bridge” 5 minutes
Round and round, the circle goes,
There’s no corner, as everyone knows.
Big or small, it’s still the same,
A perfect circle is its name!
