NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF
DIVERSICICATION
The need an importance of diversification in productive activity in our
rural sector arises mainly because:-

1: there is a greater risk in depending exclusively on farming for livelihood.

2: it is essential and useful for providing productive sustainable, livelihood option for rural people

3: in India, much of the agriculture, employment activities are concentrated in the Kharif season.

4: whereas in Rabi season, it becomes quite difficult to find employment, specially in areas with
inadequate irrigation facilities

5: diversification is essential to provide supplementary gainful employment to rural people to

overcome poverty and raise their level of income
NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSIFICATION
ACTIVITIES

diversification off productive activities in our rural

sector has two main aspects

Shift of workforce from

Crop agriculture to other allied
activities and non-agriculture
diversification sector
DIVERSIFICATION
OF CROP
PRODUCTION
# Indian farmers normally gives a prime place to the serials in the cropping
system. This cropping pattern is based on considerations of food, security, low
risk, and the easy market access to such farm produce.

# The MSP system has so far favored only three crops, namely, sugarcane , Paddy, and
wheat. This encouraged monocropping and over exploitation of natural resources in
some areas

• crops, livestock fisheries, and forestry constitute the core section of agriculture as
strong stringy exist between these sectors, both being complementary to each other

• the prediction in particular of fruits, vegetables, milk, meat and fish has increased
remarkably during the last two decades, such a shift in the result of rising income of
consumers, changing consumption pattern and growing urbanization.
Benefits of agricultural
diversification
Agricultural diversification has contributed significantly to
the agricultural growth in India pacifically in rural areas

• it is found that small holders are benefited immensely from agricultural

diversification because of the high value, food, commodities, quick and high
return to the small farmers and provide income security to them.

• the production of these commodities, being labor-intensive generates the much

needed employment opportunities in the rural area

• agriculture diversification can be usedCUSTOMERS

as an effective measure to alleviate rural
poverty, generate rural employment and conserve natural resources in rural area. We can
say its essential for promoting sustainable livelihood in rural sector.
However the small marketable surplus and high transaction cost are constraint being faced
by the small holders. The strengthening of production market consumption integration is a
way to promote the production of high value food commodities that hold demand has been
growing as a fast pace.

# hence there is a need to design comprehensive strategy, comprising innovation,

technology, policy support, infrastructural development, and appropriate institutional
arrangement

and new set of policy framework is needed to promote high value commodities
government needs to enhance resource allocation to marketing storage and
processing of high value commodities
a strong linkage amongst production, marketing and processing is an essential
CUSTOMERS
requirement for promotion of high value commodities
the emerging opportunities in the high value field segment is to create a
environment by strengthening, vertical coordination between the farmers,
processors ,retailers and the consumers. It is also known as farm farm fork linkage.
Shift of workforce from
agriculture to other activities
Shifting of workforce from agriculture to other protective activities may
reduce the burden of population on agriculture and can solve the
problem of disguised unemployment and underemployment in
agriculture sector

the shift of workforce agriculture can take place in two directions

• to allied activity such as livestock, poultry, fisheries,

horticulture, etc.
• to non-agricultural activities
Animal Husbandry
Animal, husbandry and diary development plays an important
role in the rural economy in supplementing the income of rural
households as following:

1. • in India, the farming community practices mixed crops, livestock

farming the domesticated animals are raised to provide labor and
produce commodities such as eggs, meat, wool etc.
2. • India has the world‘s largest livestock population accounting for
about 57 % of world population of buffaloes and sixth of his goat
population.
3. • But its productivity is quite low when compared to other nations
small and marginal farmer can provide sustainable livelihood
option to livestock production
DAIRYING
Dairying is that branch of agriculture which includes breeding
raising and utilizing of dairy animals for the production of milk and
various dairy products processed

• Due to successful implantation of operation flood the production of milk

has gone up more than eight fold since independence milk production in
India during the period 1950 to 51 to 2017 to 18 has increased from 17
million tons to 176.4 million tons, making India the largest producer of milk
in the world.

• the efforts of government in the dairy sector has concentrated on building up and
strengthening the infrastructure in the state of produce production of quality milk
procurement process and making of milk and milk products Gujarat, Madhya
Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan are the
major producers state
POULTRY DEVELOPMENT
IN INDIA, POULTRY ACCOUNTS FOR THE LARGEST SHARE OF
61 % FOLLOWED BY OTHER LIVESTOCK POULTRY IS ONE OF
THE FASTEST GROWING SUBSECTORS OF ANIMAL
HUSBANDRY
THE ANNUAL GROWTH RATE OF EGGS BEING AROUND 6%.

THE VALUE OF OUTPUT FROM THIS SECTOR IS NEARLY 15,000

CRORE AND IT PROVIDES DIRECT OR INDIRECT EMPLOYMENT
TO OVER 2 MILLION PEOPLE.

Under the steam of crop diversification, the emphasis is being given to
horticulture culture of crops, such as fruits, vegetable, spices, medicinal, and
aromatic plants, plantation crops like coconut, cashew, etc., and
