CENTRAL TENDENCY

By: Steven Joshua Dominno

CENTRAL TENDENCY
Measures of central tendency are summary statistics
that represent the center point or typical value of a
dataset. Examples of these measures include the
mean, median, and mode.
MEAN, MEDIAN AND
MODE
Mean - The average of a data set, calculated by
adding all the numbers in the set and dividing by
the total number of values

Median - The middle value in a data set when the

numbers are ordered from least to greatest

Mode - The number that occurs most frequently in

a data set
EXAMPLES
The given table shows the scores obtained by
different players in a match. What is mean, median
and mode of the given data?
SOLUTION
Mean

Median
find out the median let us first arrange the given data in
ascending order and by observation we can its 52
Mode
most frequent data, which is 52.
MEASURE OF DISPERSION
a statistical tool that quantifies how much numerical
data varies from an average value
TYPES OF ABSOLUTE MEASURES OF
DISPERSION
Range - It is simply the difference between the maximum
value and the minimum value given in a data set.
Variance -Deduct the mean from each data in the set,
square each of them and add each square and finally divide
them by the total no of values in the data set to get the
variance.
Standard Deviation - The square root of the variance
Mean Deviation - The average of numbers is known as the
mean and the arithmetic mean of the absolute deviations of
the observations from a measure of central tendency
EXAMPLE
How do you find the range, variance, and standard
deviation for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7?

Range
range is max(S)−min(S)
range = 7−1 = 6
range = 6
Variance

Variance = 4.667
EXAMPLE
How do you find the range, variance, and standard
deviation for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7?

Standard Deviation

since the standard deviation is the square root

of the variance
= √4.667
= 1.247
