COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is setup to introduce students with different types of stresses and strains. The students are
thoroughly taught and trained to calculate and draw shear force and bending moment diagrams of
various types of beams with different support conditions for static loads. Some initial techniques of
analysis of structural elements are demonstrated with theoretical background and calculations.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To understand the basic Engineering techniques for calculating various properties of materials for the
analysis and design of structural elements.
RELEVANT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs):
The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLOs:
4 Investigation: 10 Communication:
PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
Mechanics of Solids consists of first hand interaction of students with basic structural elements like
beams, columns and shafts. In any building design or analysis finding out the stresses, strains and
drawing their profile has got the utmost importance. On successful completion of this course the
students can easily predict the behaviour of structural elements and can contribute efficiently in
structural design by using this knowledge.
