Professional Ethics

Dr. Md. Tarek Hossain

Director, Research & Training Center
Profession (WORK): Profession refers to an
occupation that requires a specialized or manual
skill on the basis of some special learning and
qualification gathered through past training and
experience. A professional is a member of a
profession or any person who works in a
specified professional activity.
The prime objectives of the Professional Ethics are as follows:
1. Moral awareness (proficiency in recognizing moral problems in
engineering like plagiarism and patenting )
2. Convincing moral reasoning (comprehending, assessing different views)
3. Moral coherence (forming consistent viewpoints based on facts)
4. Moral imagination (searching beyond obvious the alternative
responses to issues and being receptive to creative solutions)
5. Moral communication, to express and support one‘s views to
others. The prime objective of knowing and prescribing to
Human Values are as follows:
1. To understand the moral values that ought to guide the engineering
profession,
2. To create an awareness on Engineering Ethics and Human Values.
3. To inspire Moral and Social Values and Loyalty.
4. To appreciate the rights of others.
5. Resolve the moral issues in the profession,
6. To justify the moral judgment concerning the profession.
7. Intended to develop a set of beliefs, attitudes, and habits that engineers should
display concerning morality.
What are the objectives of professional ethics and
Human Values?
Objectives of Professional Ethics & Human Values in
Engineering.
 To understand the moral values that ought to guide
the Engineering profession.
 Resolve the moral issues in the profession.
 To justify the moral judgment concerning the
profession.
What are the 12 codes of ethics?
Business Ethics: Definition, Principles, Why They're Important
Business ethics is an evolving topic. Generally, there are about 12
ethical principles: honesty, fairness, leadership, integrity,
compassion, respect, responsibility, loyalty, law-abiding,
transparency, and environmental concerns
A professional code of ethics is designed to ensure
employees are behaving in a manner that is socially
acceptable and respectful of one another. It establishes
the rules for behavior and sends a message to every
employee that universal compliance is expected.
History and Development of Engineering Ethics
Engineering ethics is the field of system of moral principles that
apply to the practice of engineering. The field examines and sets
the obligations by engineers to society, to their clients, and to the
profession. As a scholarly discipline, it is closely related to
subjects such as the philosophy of science, the philosophy of
engineering, and the ethics of technology.
In the United States, the National Society of Professional
Engineers released in 1946 its Canons of Ethics for Engineers and
Rules of Professional Conduct, which evolved to the current Code
of Ethics, adopted in 1964. These requests ultimately led to the
creation of the Board of Ethical Review in 1954.
In the United States growing professionalism gave rise to the
development of four founding engineering societies: The
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) (1851), the
American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) (1884), the
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) (1880), and
the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) (1871).
Engineering Ethics
Engineering is the process of developing an efficient mechanism which
quickens and eases the work using limited resources, with the help of
technology. Ethics are the principles accepted by the society, which also
equate to the moral standards of human beings. An engineer with ethics,
can help the society in a better way.
Hence the study of Engineering ethics, where such ethics are implemented
in engineering by the engineers, is necessary for the good of the society.
Engineering Ethics is the study of decisions, policies and values that are
morally desirable in engineering practice and research.
Ethics are principles followed depending upon the moral responsibility
that a person feels. The study of related questions about moral ideals,
character, policies and relationships of people and organizations involved
in technological activity, can be termed as Engineering ethics.
An engineer whether he works individually or works for a company, has to
go through some ethical issues, mostly under the conditions such as,
conceptualization of a product, issues arising in design and testing
departments, or may be on the issues involving the manufacturing, sales
and services. Questions related to morality also arise during supervision
and team works.
When did engineering ethics start?
In 1946, the Board approved the Canons of Ethics for Engineers
as prepared by a joint committee sponsored by the Engineers'
Council for Professional Development, a coordinating body of
technical engineering societies. NSPE was not a member of ECPD.
It was published in the January 1947 issue of The American
Engineer. Engineering ethics advantage: Better Workplace Culture
What is engineering ethics and why are ethics important to
engineer?
Engineers, like all other professions, require integrity and honesty
in their jobs. Codes of ethics enable them to be accountable for
their actions. They act as guiding principles for determining what
is right or wrong. A code of ethics for engineers ensures that they
remain honest in all their transactions.
What is the summary of engineering ethics?
Engineering ethics are principles and guidelines engineers follow
to ensure their decision-making is aligned with their obligations to
the public, their clients, and the industry.
Applied ethics in Engineering
Engineering ethics is the field of applied ethics and system of
moral principles that apply to the practice of engineering. The
field examines and sets the obligations by engineers to society, to
their clients, and to the profession.
What are the 7 principles of engineering ethics?
The fundamental principles of engineering ethics include
honesty, integrity, and respect for others. In addition, engineers
are responsible for prioritizing safety, minimizing harm to
society, and promoting public health and welfare.

Wayne Dosick provides parents with the ten golden

rules that teach: respect, honesty, fairness,
responsibility, compassion, gratitude, friendship, peace,
maturity, and faith.
What type of person does engineering?
Engineers are investigative and enterprising. Engineers tend to be
predominantly investigative individuals, which means that they
are quite inquisitive and curious people that often like to spend
time alone with their thoughts.
What is the role of engineering in human life?
Engineering plays a vital role in construction, as engineers design
and plan the buildings, roads, and other structures that make up
our communities. They ensure that these structures are safe,
efficient, and sustainable, while also considering the economic
and social impact of their designs.
What is engineering mindset?
An engineering mindset refers to the values, attitudes, and
thinking skills associated with engineering. Engineers solve
problems using systematic, iterative processes. The technologies
(objects, systems, or processes) they design address the needs and
desires of people, animals, society, and the environment.
Human qualities of an engineer
• 1. Insatiable Curiosity
• 2. Continuously Seeks to Improve
• 3. Creativity and Innovation
• 4. Problem Solving
• 5. Good Soft Skills Including Communication & Leadership
• 6. Team Player
• 7. Mathematical and Analytical Abilities Plus Logical
Thinking
• 8. Attention to Detail
• 9. Embrace Change
• 10. Optimistic
What is the relationship between client and engineer?
The engineer is responsible for the state of health of any client
relationship and the good work undertaken at the beginning must
be continued throughout the life of the relationship.
Comprehensive, clear and regular communication is the most
effective means of nurturing a client relationship.
What is a professional relationship with a client?
Client relationships describe a relationship between a provider of
a product or service and the client. These professional
relationships are generally more formal because businesses often
show their clients additional care in order to retain them as a
customer.
What is most important in client relationship?
In order to build strong and lasting client relationships, they must
be able to trust and rely on you as an expert. That's why it's
crucial to maintain a policy of openness when it comes to your
professional opinions and point of view regarding the best
interests of the project.
