ASSIGNMENT#02
Part-a: Assume a twelve story RCC framed office shown below (Fig. A) is located in pulicharkhi, Kabul.
Calculate the wind forces on a central frame of the structure assuming basic wind speed to be 45m/sec
and the building is 21m by 21m in plan and having a 39m height above ground level. Use the data given
in the lecture notes. Analyze the structure, tabulate the important results, and comment on the results
of the analysis.
Solution
Step-01: Characteristic wind pressure is 𝑊𝐾 = 0.613𝑉𝑠 2 , where,
𝑚
𝑉𝑠 = 𝐷𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛 = 𝑉𝑆1 𝑆2 𝑆3
𝑠𝑒𝑐
𝑉 = 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐
𝑆1 = 𝑡𝑜𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟

𝑆2 = 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟

𝑆3 = 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒

For hilly area 𝑆1 = 1.1

The probability factor for the life of the structure 𝑆3 = 1

30 1.15

20 39 9 D x 0.05

50 1.20

9 ∗ 0.05
𝐷= = 0.03
20
𝑥 = 1.15 + 𝐷 = 1.15 + 0.03 = 1.18

Therefore, the design wind speed

𝑉𝑠 = 𝑉𝑆1 𝑆2 𝑆3 = 45 ∗ 1.1 ∗ 1.18 = 58.41𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐

Characteristic wind pressure=0.613 ∗ 58.412 = 2091 𝑁⁄ 2 = 2.091 𝑘𝑁⁄ 2

𝑚 𝑚
Wind pressure on an interior frame will be

𝑊𝑘𝑖 = 2.091 ∗ 7 = 14.637𝑘𝑁/𝑚

Wind concentrated force at each floor level will be

𝑊𝑝 = 14.637 ∗ 3,25 = 47.57 𝑘𝑁

Wind concentrated force at roof level will be

𝑊𝑘𝑟 = 14.637 ∗ 1.625 = 23.785𝑘𝑁

The concentrated forces due to wind pressure on the building in different floors and roof level are show
in the figure below
Part-b: Assume twelve stories RCC framed office building with live loads of 2.5 kN/m2 shown in the figure
of part-a is located in seismic zone IV. Calculate the seismic forces on the structure using seismic
coefficient method. Assume roof and floors slabs thicknesses of 150mm, beams section 250mm by
400mm, columns section 500mm by 500mm and story height is 3.25m.

As recommended by the codes assume 25% live loads are acting during earthquake. Analyze a central
frame and tabulate the important results. Comment on the results of the analysis.

Use the following data and factors:

𝛼0 = 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑐 ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑧𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑒𝑖𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑜𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 = 0.05

Building is without bracing or shear wall therefore, T=0.1N

𝛽 = 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑢𝑝𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙 − 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 = 1.0 (𝑇𝑦𝑝𝑒 𝐼𝐼 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙)

I= a coefficient depending upon the importance of the structure=1.0.

C= a coefficient defining the flexibility of structure depending upon fundamental time period T, for its
value use the C versus period given in the lecture notes.

Solution:
(a) Dead Loads
Weight of beams= 24𝑥0.25𝑋0.4𝑥7𝑥24 = 403.2 𝑘𝑁
Weight of columns=16𝑥0.5𝑥0.5𝑥3.25𝑥24 = 312 𝑘𝑁
Weight of slabs= 21x21x0.15x24 = 1587.6 kN
Weight of walls=24𝑥3𝑋0.125𝑥7𝑥24 = 1512 𝑘𝑁
(b) Live loads
Seismic weight due to live load on each floor 21𝑥21𝑥2.5𝑥0.25 = 275.625 𝑘𝑁
(c) Lumped mass at floor level 1= 𝑊1 = 403.2 + 312 + 1587.6 + 1512 + 275.625 = 4090.425𝑘𝑁.
Similarly, 𝑊1 = 𝑊2 = 𝑊3 = 𝑊4 = 𝑊5 = 𝑊6 = 𝑊7 = 𝑊8 = 𝑊9 = 𝑊10 = 𝑊11 = 4090.425𝑘𝑁
Lumped mass at roof level=2902.8 kN (No live load, half of story columns height, and half of wall
height contribute)
(d) Base shear, 𝑉𝑏 = 𝐶𝛼ℎ 𝑊 = 𝐶𝛽𝐼𝛼0 𝑤
Where C is a coefficient defining the flexibility of structure with the increase in number of stories
depending upon fundamental time period T and given in the figure below:
𝑊 = 11 ∗ 4090.425 + 2902.8𝑘𝑁 = 47897.475𝑘𝑁
𝑇 = 0.1 ∗ 12 = 1.2𝑠𝑒𝑐
From Figure 𝐶 = 0.5
It is assumed that the building is located in zone IV and rested on raft foundation then,

𝛽 = 1, 𝐼 = 1
From table for zone IV 𝛼0 = 0.05
Therefore
𝛼ℎ = 𝛽𝐼𝛼0 = 1𝑥1𝑥0.05 = 0.05
𝑉𝐵 = 0.5𝑥0.05𝑥47.897.475 = 1197.44𝑘𝑁
(e) Distribution of the lateral seismic force induced along the height of the building and shear
distribution in the building are given by the below expressions
𝑖=𝑛
𝑊𝑖 ℎ2
𝑄𝑖 = 𝑉𝐵 𝑉𝐵 = ∑ 𝑄𝑖
∑𝑖=𝑛 2
𝑖=1 𝑊𝑖 ℎ 𝑖 𝑖=1
