Editor Tips & Tricks

Manage Files With Content Drawer

Content Drawer is a valuable tool for anyone who wants to manage their assets

efficiently and work more seamlessly within the viewport

To access it just Click the Content Drawer button on the bottom toolbar

Or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Space Bar (Windows) or Cmd + Space Bar

(macOS)

You can use it while working on other windows

To keep it open, click the Dock in Layout button

This way you can convert it to the good old content browser

By default, the Content Browser docks along the bottom of the Unreal Editor

window

You can click and drag to re-dock it anywhere within the editor or float it as its

own window
You can also right-click the Content Browser tab and select Move to Sidebar,

which will collapse the Content Browser to a clickable tab in the left-hand

sidebar of the Unreal Editor window

Don’t forget that you can have up to 4 content browsers open at the same time
Reset Unreal Engine Editor To Default

If you mess up your editor with positioning windows all around and you want to

revert back to default, just go to window, load layout, default editor layout

And you will have a clean layout again

Don’t forget that you can save your layouts

Also, remove them if you don’t need them

UE4 Editor Loadout

This takes us to the next tip, and this is for those who prefer the Unreal Engine 4

layout

To load this layout go to window, layout, and classic UE4 Layout

And you have old school editor back

To revert it go window, layout, default editor layout

Reduce Scalability To Increase Editor Performance

The default quality setting in Unreal Engine 5 is Epic, but to enhance your FPS

and to increase performance go to settings, engine scalability settings

And over here change the quality

However, changing these settings will only affect the editor and not your game

or project

Zoom In & Out

To zoom in hold the right mouse button and press C on your keyboard
To zoom out hold the right mouse button and press the Z key

When you release the right mouse button it will revert back to normal

Change FOV (Field Of View)

If you want to permanently change the field of view go to the left and click on the

viewport options

And over here change the field of view

Remember that the default is 90

Fullscreen Mode

You can see in my other videos that I use full screen to preview my level

Just hit F11 to go full screen and hit again to exit

Bear in mind that you can also go full screen in the editor and while you playing

the level
Viewport Camera Speed

You can change the camera speed while moving around your level by scrolling

the mouse wheel while holding the right mouse button

Game Mode

You can hide all gadgets and helpers in your level by pressing G

This way you will have a clear view of your level

Press G to revert it back

Change Viewports

If you click the perspective option you will see that you can change views here

But you can also do this super fast by holding CTRL and middle mouse button

and you will see the white line

Now just move from side to side or top to bottom to change the views
To go back to perspective, just draw the diagonal line

Measuring Distances

While we are in the top or side view we can click and hold the middle mouse

button and we get this yellow line

Move around and you will be able to measure the distance between the objects
To check out the measuring units go to edit, editor preferences, type in

measuring tool

And over here you can change the units

The default is in centimeters

Set Custom Keybinds

You can practically change every shortcut in Unreal Engine

To do that go to edit, editor preferences, and under general you can see

keyboard shortcuts

Just type in the search bar what you want to change and type new binding
Output Log

If you want to see the full output log click the button next to the content drawer

This output log window will behave like a content drawer so make sure to dock it

or go to the window and select output log

Fix Texture Streaming Pool Over Budget Error

While we are in the console command we can quickly fix the streaming pool

error

This error tells us that we don’t have enough memory

The first thing to do is to go to edit, project settings, and type in virtual texture

And enable virtual texture support

Make sure to restart the Unreal Engine

Another way is to type in r.Streaming.PoolSize in the command line

This way you will see how much memory you have

You can type again r.Streaming.PoolSize and next to it type 1500 or 2000 to

increase memory, but don’t overdo this

Don’t Forget To Use Search Bars

Unreal engine has lots of data so to find what you want make sure to use search

bars whenever you can

You can search in the outliner in the top right corner

If you select an asset, you can search the details panel

Also, in the drop-down menu from the quick add button

If you open the content drawer you can type in the search bar

Practically in any of the menus at the top

Just try to type something and if the search bar pops up it’s searchable

Search All Assets In The Project

If you want to see all your assets in the project go CTRL P and over here you can

see all your assets that you can search and find
Using Asset Filter To Organize Files

If you want to have better file organization use the asset filter

To access it click this icon here

And now you can select which type of assets you want to see

Let’s say we want to see static meshes

And materials

Here you have shown only static meshes and materials

You can add many filters, and you can turn them on or off if you click on them

To remove the filter just click reset filters

Bookmark Views

You can bookmark views in your level by positioning your camera and pressing

CTRL 1, moving the camera to a different position, and pressing CTRL 2

if you now press 1 it will take you to the first view and if you press 2 it will take

you to the second view

This way you can position the camera view to see your object from multiple

angles

Viewport Tabs

The next good thing is to set up multiple viewports if you want to see changes in

the level dynamically

You can have up to 4 viewports

Go to the window, viewports, and enable multiple viewports

Folder Importance And Making Favorites

If you want to make a specific folder pop out you can right-click and change its

color
To remove it right click and set color, and select clear color

To add a folder to the favorites folder right click and select Add to favorites
Your folder will be here under the favorites tab

To remove from favorites just right-click and select Remove from favorites

Renaming Files

To quickly rename a file press F2 on your keyboard and rename the file

Plugins

Don’t forget that the Unreal engine is packed with extra functionalities

That comes in the form of plugins

Just go to settings and go to plugins

Over here you can find all you need

Datasmith

One of the most important plugins out there

It allows you to seamlessly and easily import content from another 3d software

whether is a blender, 3dsmax, or something else

Be Conservative With The Number Of Plugins

As you may expect, lots of plugins will slow you down, and they may break your

project very easily

So to fight this, just make sure to enable only the ones that you need

Saving Disk Space

One nice trick to save disk space is to open your Epic launcher

Go to the library tab

Over here you can see how much space your assets take

To reduce this number choose the asset that you don’t use in your projects and

just click Remove local content

High-Resolution Screenshot

If you want to quickly and easily capture your work scene, first of all, press F11 to

go full screen and go to this menu on the left

Over here choose high resolution screenshot

Change quality over here, but don’t overdo it because Unreal Engine could crash

You can click capture

Or press this crop icon and choose the area you want to capture
Asset Manipulation Tips And Tricks

Actor Panel

If you go up here under this green add button you can see all the actors that you

can use
But, there is a better way of doing this

Go down that says place actors panel

Over here you have all your actors sorted out for better search and placement

Transform Actors With Shortcuts

Use W to move, E to rotate, and R to scale your objects

And don’t forget to use space to cycle between them

Uniform Scaling

To scale your object with all the same values on the x, y, and z-axis, select the

object, and make sure to enable the lock icon on the details panel on the right to

lock the axis

Now if you type one number in any of the axis fields it will automatically scale

others

Quickly Copy And Paste Values Between Objects

For example, let’s say you want the second object to be the same size as the first

To do that select the first object hold SHIFT and right-click on any property here,

for example, scale

Now select the second object hold SHIFT and left mouse click to paste it

Your object will be the same size

This works with other properties as well

Move With Actors

Select the object and make sure to hold the SHIFT key

Now move the object as usual and you will move with the object
Possess Actor

A very useful trick is to pilot or possess objects

All you need to do is select an object and select pilot

And now you are the object that can move around
To leave this mode, just click this eject button

This is particularly useful when you want to position your camera to capture the

scene

Copy And Duplicate

Instead of adding objects from the actors' panel or hitting copy paste you can

just select your object, hold ALT key, and while holding drag one of the arrows

and move object to duplicate it

Make sure to release the left mouse button before the ALT key

Snap To The Ground On The Closest Object

An easy way to position your object on the ground is to hit the END key on your

keyboard

this way it will snap to the closest object below it

Zoom To Actor, Or Focus Actor

If you manage to lost inside the level, or you’re designing a large-scale map,

make sure to select the object in your outliner and press F to go to that object

instantly

This way you can quickly move around your map

Rotate Around the Object

If you zoom your object with the F key, you can simply hold the ALT key and left

mouse button to rotate around the object

Hiding Objects

To hide objects, just select an object and press the H button

And to revert it press CTRL H

You can also hide it by clicking the eye button next to the object in the outliner

Isolate Selection

To isolate one object or group of objects just select your object, right-click, go

visibility, and click show only selected

To go back just press CTRL H

Resize From One Size, Change Pivot Point

If you hold the ALT key and the middle mouse button, you can move the pivot

point, for example, to the bottom of the object

and now if I press R to scale I can scale this object only from the top
Find Actor In Content Browser

If you have lots of content the easiest way to find where your actors are located

is to select the actor and press CTRL B, or select the actor and click on the

magnifying glass icon in the details panel on the right

Paste the Actor At The Precise Location

Usually, when you copy-paste objects, it will paste them in the same location, but

if you want to paste it at the cursor location go to edit, editor preferences

Type in paste here in the search bar

And over here assign a shortcut key

Now go copy, click anywhere you want to paste, and instead of paste hit your

shortcut key

Merge Multiple Actors Into Single Mesh

To merge multiple meshes into one first select the meshes you want to merge by

holding the CTRL key and clicking on the objects

Now go actor, merge actors, click merge, name your new actor and hit save
Now you can easily drag and drop your merged actor to the level
Access Megascans And Use Super Quality Nanite Models

You can access megascans library if you go here add and go to Quixel bridge

Log in with your Epic Games account

Over here find the object you want and make sure that quality over here is set to

nanite

This way you will get cinematic quality high-resolution assets for your game or

movie
Creating Holes In Objects

To quickly create holes simply drag an object that will represent a hole, for

example sphere, and move the sphere to the wall

Select sphere, and the wall, go to modeling mode, select model

And go boolean

Select operation B-A or A-B, it depends on what you selected first

You can see the hole, now just hit accept

Go back to selection mode and you can see your hole over here

Using Math Operators

You can use math operators to change object properties

For example, you can make an object exactly 2 times bigger by multiplying a

number by two in the scale property

Or divide by 2 to make it 2 times smaller

Whenever you see a number it usually means that it can be used with math

operators

Packed Level Actors For Optimizing Performance

You can select a few static meshes you want to combine and go right click, go

level, select create packed level actor

and now you can drag and drop it to your level

This is different from merging meshes because you can always right-click and

break them into individual parts

Bear in mind that only static meshes can be packed together, no blueprints

allowed

Copy And Paste Objects To The Notepad

Ok, this is a crazy one, did you know that you can copy your object and just open

Notepad and paste it

and copy from Notepad and paste it back to unreal

Very useful if you need to copy-paste objects from one level to another or from

one project to another

Creating Landscapes With Heightmaps

One of the easiest ways to create a landscape is to go to

motionforgepictures.com and over here download any heightmap,

unzip it,

Go to Unreal Engine,

Go to landscape mode

Over here choose import from file

Simply choose the heightmap PNG file

Hit Import

After a few moments, you will have a huge landscape created for you in just a

few simple clicks

Blueprint tips and tricks

Quickly Get And Set Variables

Usually, when you drag variables you get the option to get or set a variable

To skip this step simply hold the ALT key to set the variable

Or hold CTRL to get the variable

Math Expression Node

You can quickly add mathematic operations

Just right-click and choose the math expression node

Type in the values, for example, 2*4-3

If you double-click it you can see the math nodes automatically created for you
Align Nodes Horizontally And Vertically

You can quickly tidy up your blueprint by selecting nodes and pressing Q to align

nodes horizontally

Or press SHIFT ALT and S to align them vertically

Duplicate Instead of Copy and Paste

You can quickly duplicate nodes by pressing CTRL D

Find Where Your Variables Are Referenced

To find out where are your variables referenced simply press CTRL F and type

the name of the variable or node

And to find where is referenced in the whole project click on the binoculars icon
Collapse/Group Nodes Into Subgraph

If you have lots of nodes and you want to make things more readable and

organized all you need to do is select all nodes you want to group and right-click

and select collapse nodes

And you can name this group

To revert it, just right-click and select Expand node

Bookmark Blueprint Viewport

Similar to the bookmarking view in our level, we can bookmark the view in the

blueprint

To do that find the location you want to bookmark and press CTRL 1
Move away, and to go back to the bookmarked view press SHIFT 1

Create Validated Get

Simply get your variable to blueprint and right click and choose convert to

validated get

Material Editor Hotkeys

You can quickly add some material-related nodes by holding 1 and clicking to get

a constant vector, 2 and click to get constant 2, vector 3, and 4

Also hold M and click for multiply node

A and click for add node

V for vector parameter

And L for LERP or linear interpolation node

Node Connection Shortcuts

To break the connection between nodes hold the ALT key, and to reconnect it to

a different pin hold the CTRL key

Clean Graph

If you have a large mess with your blueprint, just click here clean graph to

remove unnecessary and disconnected nodes

Comment

To make things more readable, select nodes in your blueprint and press C on

your keyboard to add comment

This way you can remind yourself and your teammate what is what in your

blueprint
Saving Blueprint As Text Files

Same as objects in your level you can save your blueprint in the notepad

Just select your nodes, copy and paste them into the notepad

Now you can save them, or paste them into another project
Lightning & Postproces tips

Infinite Post-Process Volume

Usually, effects that you add to your post process volume will be applied only

within the bounding box

If you want to apply it to the whole level you can make the box bigger or select

post process volume and type infinite

Over here make sure that this infinite extent unbound is selected

Exposure Settings

To change exposure, select your post process volume and type in exposure

Under metering mode choose manual

And change value here to change exposure compensation and make your scene

lighter or darker

When working with lighting you should always keep your exposure constant

To do that you can go to the post process volume and set Min and Max exposure

Or go edit, project settings

Type in auto exposure

And make sure to turn it off

Change Global Illumination

To change the global illumination type, select your post process volume

Type in global illumination

Under method choose between lumen, raytracing, or other

Control Directional Light

You can easily control the position of directional light by pressing and holding

nanite

This works with megascans assets also

Camera & Sequencer tips and tricks

Linear Keyframes

As you may notice, if you add your camera to the sequencer it moves strangely.

First it starts slow, speeds up, and then slows down

If you want your camera movement to be consistent select your keyframes

right click and select linear

Quickly Bring Actor To Focus

To quickly bring your object into focus select cine camera actor

Change the focus method to tracking

And make sure to select the actor you want to track

Or you can simply use the eye dropper tool to select your focus target

Time Dilation Track

To create a Time Dilation Track, click the Sequencer's + Track dropdown menu

and select the Time Dilation Track

The Time Dilation Track will be created with a value of 1.0, which is the default

speed of the game simulation

Now you can increase or decrease the number to change the speed accordingly

Adding Post-Process Volume To The Sequencer

The awesome thing to do is to add post process volume to your sequencer

This means that you are going to be able to add contrast, blur, color, and all

other features at the specific place and time in your video clip

This will get you extra control and make your life easier
Movie Render Queue Plugin

To export your cinematic scene in high quality you need to enable the movie

render queue plugin

Go edit, plugins

Movie render queue

Restart unreal engine

Go window

Movie render queue

Select the sequencer you want to export

Click on settings and replace jpg with png to increase the quality

Click on settings again and enable override anti-aliasing

and make method to none
