VIMSOPAKA BALA OF PLANETS

In Parashara System, Shodasa Vargas are used in natal horoscopy both for predicting the
results of different aspects of life and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of planets. The
Vimsopakabala of planets are given due importance while judging their effects in
Dasa/Bhukthi and transit. The strength attained by planets consequent upon their position in
various Divisional charts is an integral component in the calculation of Vimsopakabala. It is
arrived at by dividing the product of Vargavishwa and Swavishwa by 20.

Vargavishwa is the value of strength attained by a planet due to its position in various
Divisional charts based on its five-fold friendship (Panchada maîtri). The values range from
a maximum of 20 units in own sign to a minimum of 5 units in worst enemy’s sign. The
following table provides the actual values:
Position of planet in Value of Vargavishwa to be assigned
Own varga 20
Best Friend’s varga 18
Friend’s varga 15
Neutral’s varga 10
Enemy’s varga 7
Bitter Enemy’s varga 5

Swavishwa is the value of strength assigned to a planet in a 20 point scale by virtue of its
position in own house in various Divisional charts under shadvarga, saptavarga, dasavarga
or shodasavarga schemes. The following table provides further details:
Name of Varga Value of Swavishwa assigned in
Shadvargas Saptavargas Dasavargas Shodasavargas

Note: Vimsopaka bala of a planet can never be more than 20 units.

Calculation of Vimsopaka bala

Formula: (Varga vishwa X Swa vishwa) ÷ 20.

Interpretation
A planet with less than 5 units of Vimsopakabala is not capable of giving any auspicious
results. A planet with more than 15 units of Vimsopakabala will yield wholly favourable
results while intervening values of strength would yield mediocre results.
According to Brihat Parashara Hora, Chapter 7(Sl.30 to 32) further grading of vimsopaka
bala is done for interpreting the Dasa effects, as follows:
