OPENER EXAMINATION

FORM 1
1(a)Define the term computer (2 marks)
It is an electronic device capable of receiving data (input) and performs a
sequence of operations (processing) to produce output also known as
information.
(b)Define the following terms as used in computing
(i) Data (2 marks)
Raw facts such as numbers, letters and symbols that have no meaning to
the user.
(ii)Information (2 marks)
The processed data that is meaningful to the user
(iii)Program (2 marks)
A set of instructions
(iv)Processing (2 marks)
The process of converting data into information

2.Match the following generations of computers with the technology used to develop
them (4 marks)
a First generation Thermionic valve (vacuum
tubes)
b Second generation Transistors
c Third generation Intergrated circuits
d Fourth generation Very large scale integrated
circuits

3.State and explain five characteristics of a computer (10 marks)

(i)Fast – in terms of speed, a computer can perform calculations within
seconds that human beings would take hours to complete.
(ii)Accurate – unlike human beings who make erros, a computer has high
degree of accuracy regardless of the complexity and number of times a
calculation is performed.
(iii)Versatile- Computers are flexible in that they can be used to carry out
different types of activiteis such as typing, calculations and playing music.
(iv)Reliable – Computers are more reliable becuase they do not get tired or
bored in processing repetitive tasks.
(v)Memory – computers have in-built memory used to store and recall
(retrieve) large amount of data compared to human memory recall.
(vi)Deligent- A computer can perform repetitive or routine tasks without
getting bored, tired, fatigued or losing concentration.

4.List five peripheral devices of a computer (5 marks)

Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Speaker
Printer
1
5(a)State four factors to consider when setting up a computer lab (4 marks)
(i)security of computer hardware and software
(ii)reliability of the source of power
(iii)the floor, space and number of cumputers to be set up
(iv)maximum number of users

(b)State five measures used to ptotect computers in a computer lab (5 marks)

(i)burglar proffing the room
(ii)installing fire prevention and control equipment
(iii)room should be well laid out
(iv)stable power supply
(v)dust and dump control
(vi)dampness or humidity
(vii)cables and power sockets should be well insulated and of the correct
power rating
(ix)ensure no foods or drinks

(c)State five measures used to protect users in a computer lab (5 marks)

-Power cables should be insulated
-providing stable/standard furnature
-Ventilation
-Painting and wall reflection
-Overcrowding

6(a)Define the term booting (2 marks)

The process of putting on a computer

(b)State two types of booting (2 marks)

Cold booting
Warm booting

7.State four classifications of computers according to physical size (4 marks)

Super computers
Mainframe computers
Mini computers
Micro computers

8. Mention four tools that contributed to the development of computers (4 marks)

 Abalus
 Napier’s bones
 Slide rule
 Pascaline machine

9.State and explain five areas where computers are used (10 marks)
 Supermarkets – in management of daily transactions and inventory
control
 Offices – to increase efficiency
 Banks – in ATMS, record keeping etc
 Industries – to monitor and control industrial and manufacturing
processes
 Health institutions – to keep patients records in order to provide easy
treatment and diagnos history
 Transpport
 Communication
 Law enforcement
 Education
 Domestic and entertainment
 Library services

10. Differentiate between Digital computers and Analogue computers and give two
examples of each (6 mrks)
Digital computers process data in discrete form while analogue computers process
data that is continous in nature.

Examples
Digital computers
1.desktop computers
2.Tablets
3.smart phones
Analogue computers
Mercury thermometer
Manometer
Weighing balance
Voltmeter
