Are you ready class? Yes teacher!

Okay Let’s begin!

That is correct.

How about for number 3?

B. Presentation/ Discussion

Our topic for today is Pottery, its background and

history and Types and Materials in Pottery making.

Do you have any idea what is pottery class? Or have Yes, teacher! We usually use
you see a pot or vase, class? it for growing flowers.
Yes, that’s correct. That’s a very good example.

Now, let’s define POTTERY.

Pottery- consists of functional and decorative objects

made from clay and fired at low or high temperature.

-is a type of ceramics focused on traditional clay

items.

CERAMICS

From the Greek word “keramikos” or “potter”, is also

a term used, although ceramic has a wider
application and includes objects from industrial use.

-includes pottery but also other clay and non-clay

items that have been heat-hardened.

What is the Greek word of ceramics, class?

Keramikos or potter, teacher

Alright, very good class. Always remember that

okay?
Yes, teacher.

Now, let’s talk about the history of Pottery.

Early Filipinos were adept of at collecting clay and

forming, sun drying and baking earthenware in open
fires. Shaping was done by hand with or without a
turntable, after which the earthenware was fired in
the open field using forest wood, bamboo, dry leaves,
and grass. There were no kilns or ovens in
prehistoric earthenware sites in the Philippines.
Hand-shaping methods including coiling, pinching,
pressing, molding and slab building.
Alright, since we’re done with the background and
history of pottery, now let’s tackle about the pottery
types and materials.

Listen carefully, okay class? Yes, teacher.

TYPES AND MATERIALS IN POTTERY

 EARTHENWARE

 Clay Type: Earthenware clay, typically rich in

iron, which gives it a reddish or brownish
color.
1. Other Materials: May include sand or grog
(pre-fired clay particles) to add strength.
 Characteristics: Soft and porous when
unglazed, and fired at a lower temperature
(1700°F to 2100°F). Earthenware is more
easily shaped but needs glaze for
waterproofing if it’s intended to hold liquids

Glaze Earthenware Unglazed Earthenware

 STONEWARE

 Clay Type: Stoneware clay, which is often

gray or brown and has a higher silica content.
 Other Materials: Sometimes includes feldspar
to improve durability.
 Characteristics: Stronger and denser than
earthenware, stoneware is fired at higher
temperatures (2220°F to 2230°F), making it
naturally non-porous and waterproof even
without glaze

Glazed Stoneware Unglazed Stoneware

 PORCELAIN

 Clay Type: Porcelain clay, primarily composed

of kaolin, a very fine and pure white clay.
 Other Materials: Often includes feldspar and
silica to increase strength and translucency.
 Characteristics: Fired at very high
temperatures (2300°F to 2500°F), porcelain
becomes extremely hard, smooth, and often
translucent. Its non-porous and delicate nature
makes it ideal for fine, decorative, or delicate
functional items.
Alright class, so those are the types and materials
use in pottery making. Do you have any question None so far, teacher.
class?

C. Application
Now that we are done tackling with the history
of pottery and its types and the materials used. I
prepared an activity for everyone to assess your
understanding of topic.

Do you understand class? Yes, teacher!

INSTRUCTION:

The class will be divided into 3 groups. Each group will

be assigned a specific pottery item.

 Group 1 – Palayok
 Group 2 – Mug
 Group 3 – Vase

Each group will identify the types of clay used in

making the pottery items by touching it or examining
its texture and the overall appearance of the pottery.
Include also a short definition for each pottery item and
its historical significance in the Philippine setting.

Each group will present their findings in the class after

15 minutes.

For you to be able to perform you task effectively and

efficiently, you may refer to this rubric for the Okay, teacher.
