Steering Clutch And Brake

Disassemble Steering Clutch And Brake

Start By:

a. separate final drive from steering clutch and brake

The brake group contains springs that are under compression. To


prevent possible personal injury from flying parts, the brake group
must be disassembled exactly as the following steps describe. Do not
remove bolts (2) until after bolts (3) are slowly loosened and removed.

1. Remove the four bolts and plate (1) from the steering clutch and brake assembly. Do not remove
bolts (2) at this time.

2. Install tooling (A), and attach a hoist. The weight of brake group (4) is 159 kg (350 lb). Remove
brake group (4) from steering clutch group (5).

To prevent possible personal injury from flying parts, make sure bolts
(2) are tight before bolts (3) are removed. Bolts (3) are long enough to
release the spring pressure behind retainer (6) as long as bolts (3) are
installed.

3. Turn brake group (4) over. Evenly loosen 10 bolts (3) to release the spring pressure behind
retainer (6). Remove bolts (3) and retainer (6).

4. Remove four discs (7) and the three plates from brake housing (4).

5. Remove O-ring seal (8) from the brake group.

6. Turn the brake group over, and install tooling (A). The weight of brake housing (4) is 73 kg (161
lb). Remove seven bolts (2). Use a soft hammer, and remove brake housing (4) from the retainer.

7. Remove ring (9) and spring (11) from retainer (10).

8. Remove ring (12) and piston (13) from the retainer.

9. Remove the seal ring from the inner diameter of piston (13).

10. Remove seal ring (15) from retainer (10).

11. Remove two ball bearings (14), one from each side of retainer (10).

12. Remove two O-ring seals (16) from the brake housing.

13. The weight of the steering clutch group is 159 kg (350 lb). Remove four bolts (18) and hub
(17).

14. Use tool (B), and remove retaining ring (21).

15. Remove plate (20) and bearing (19) from the steering clutch group.

16. Remove the 10 bolts and the retainer.

17. Remove five discs (22) and the four plates from housing (23).

18. Install tooling (C) into the piston. The weight of piston (24) is 19.1 kg (42 lb). Remove piston
(24) from housing (23).

19. Remove the seal ring from the inner diameter of piston (24).

20. Install tooling (A), and attach a hoist. The weight of housing (23) is 33.6 kg (74 lb). The weight
of hub assembly (25) is 21 kg (46 lb). Raise the housing and hub assembly together, and remove
the wood blocks.

21. Lower housing (23), and remove hub assembly (25).

22. Turn housing (23) over, and remove ring (26).

23. Use tool (B), and remove retaining ring (27) from hub assembly (25).

24. Remove three seal rings (28) from the hub assembly.

25. Remove O-ring seal (30) from hub assembly (25).

26. Use tooling (D) and a press, and remove plate (29) from the hub assembly.

Assemble Steering Clutches And Brakes

1. Lower the temperature of two bearings (1). Install two bearings (1), one in each side of retainer
(2).

2. Install seal ring (3) on retainer (2).

3. Install seal ring (5) in piston (4).

4. Put piston (4) in position on retainer (2).

5. Put ring (6) in position on piston (4).

6. Put spring (7) in position on ring (6) and piston (4). Spring (7) goes with the concave side up.

7. Put ring (8) in position on spring (7).

8. Install two O-ring seals (9) on brake housing (10).

9. Install tooling (A) onto brake housing (10). Attach a hoist, and put the brake housing in position
on retainer (2), and install the seven bolts that hold it.

NOTE: A disc assembly has friction material on both sides. A plate is a smooth stud plate and does
not have friction material on either side. Put clean oil on all disc assemblies and plates before
assembly.

10. Turn the brake housing over. Put steering clutch hub (11) in position to align the discs. Install
four discs (12) and the three plates into the housing. Alternate installation of the discs and plates.
Start with a disc and end with a disc.

11. Put retainer (14) in position on the discs and brake housing.

NOTICE

Make sure the disc assemblies do not get between retainer (14) and the
brake housing when the bolts are tightened.

12. Install bolts (13) and snug evenly, but do not tighten. Bolts (13) put the spring under
compression. Bolts (13) should not be tightened now so the brake discs can be aligned with the
steering clutch housing splines in Step 28.

13. Remove steering clutch hub (11) from the brake housing.

14. Make sure the smooth side of plate (16) is toward the splines on hub assembly (15). Use tooling
(B) and a press, and install plate (16) onto hub assembly (15).

15. Install seal ring (17) onto plate (16).

16. Use tool (C), and install retaining ring (18).

NOTICE

New seal rings must be preloaded before they are installed to prevent
them from being damaged or broken when the clutch housing is
installed. There is a correct method to preload new seal rings prior to
installation. Place your hands on each end of the seal ring, and pull
(wind) the ends several inches past each other or until they almost
make contact. See Figure 1. Use care to keep the ring shaped like a
circle. This will make an even bend (or ring "set") all around the ring.
When the seal ring is in the groove of carrier (24), the ends must butt
together lightly. Do not bend the seal ring as shown in Figure 2. This
does not make an even bend all the way around the ring.

Do not attempt to use this method to preload a used seal ring. Also, do
not use this procedure for cast iron seal rings. This will cause used or
cast iron seal rings to break.

17. Install three seal rings (19) onto the hub assembly.

18. Install ring (20) into steering clutch housing (21).

19. Use tooling (A) and a hoist, and put housing (21) on blocks as shown. Put hub assembly (15) in
position in housing (21).

20. Install seal ring (22) in position (23).

21. Install tooling (D) on piston (23). Put piston (23) in position in housing (21).

22. Heat plate (24) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install bearing (25) into plate
(24).

23. Install plate (24) and bearing (25) onto hub assembly (15).

24. Use tooling (C), and install retaining ring (26).

25. Put hub (11) in position, and install the four bolts that hold it.

26. Install five discs (27) and the four plates into the housing. Alternate installation of the discs and
plates. Start with a disc and end with a disc.

27. Put retainer (28) in position, and install the 10 bolts that hold it to the housing.

28. Install tooling (A) to the brake housing, and attach a hoist. Align the brake discs with the
splines on the steering clutch housing. Put brake group (29) in position on steering clutch group
(30). Make sure seal rings are in the correct position so they do not get caught as the groups are
assembled together.

29. Install plate (31) and four bolts.

30. Tighten bolts (13). Bolts (13) were installed in Step 12 but not tightened so the brake discs
could be aligned with the steering clutch housing splines when they were assembled together in
Step 28.

End By:

a. connect final drive to steering clutch and brake

Main Drive Shaft (Direct Drive)

Remove And Install Main Drive Shaft (Direct Drive)


Start By:

a. remove bottom guard

1. Remove six bolts (1) that hold the main drive shaft to the flex coupling.

2. Remove four bolts (3) that hold the main drive shaft to yoke assembly (2). Slide the yoke
assembly into the transmission, and remove the main drive shaft. The weight of the main drive
shaft is 11.4 kg (25 lb).

3. If necessary, remove four bolts (4), and remove bearing (5).

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the main drive shaft.

4. Put bearing (5) in position on the main drive shaft, and install four bolts (4). Tighten bolts (4) to
a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft).

5. Put the main drive shaft in position, and install six bolts (1).

6. Align yoke assembly (2) with bearing (5), and install four bolts (3). Tighten bolts (3) to a torque
of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft).

Start By:

a. remove bottom guard

1. Remove four bolts (1) from each side of drive shaft (2). Slide yoke (3) into the transmission, and
remove drive shaft (2).

2. To install the drive shaft, put it into position, and install four bolts (1) at each end of the drive
shaft. Tighten eight bolts (1) to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft).

Drive Shaft (Pump Coupling)

Remove And Install Drive Shaft (Pump Coupling)


Start By:

a. remove bottom guard

b. remove main drive shaft

NOTE: The removal and installation procedure for the power train in oil pump drive shaft is the
same for the direct drive and power shift machines. The direct drive machine is shown.

1. Remove two bolts (2) that hold wiring harness clips to the drive shaft guard. Move wire harness
out of the way. Bolts (2) also fasten two halves of the drive shaft guard together.

2. Remove eight bolts (3) that hold bracket (1) to the frame and to the drive shaft guard. Remove
bracket (1).

NOTE: The removal and installation procedure for the power train oil pump drive shaft is the same
for the direct drive and power shift machines. The direct drive machine is shown.

1. Remove two bolts (2) that hold wiring harness clips to the drive shaft guard. Move wire harness
out of the way. Bolts (2) also fasten two halves of the drive shaft guard together.

2. Remove eight bolts (3) that hold bracket (1) to the frame and to the drive shaft guard. Remove
bracket (1).

NOTE: The switch on the power train oil pump may have to be removed to remove and install the
pump drive shaft guard.

3. Rotate the drive shaft guard 180°, and remove two more bolts that fasten the drive shaft guard
halves together. Remove the two halves of the drive shaft guard.

NOTE: Tube assembly (5) will be free to turn when bolts (4) are removed from the engine end.
Loosen the three bolts at the pump end of the tube assembly (5) before the three bolts are removed
from the engine end. If drive shaft (7) will be removed from the pump end, the bolts that fasten the
drive shaft to the flange should be loosened before tube assembly (5) is removed.

4. Remove three bolts (4) from each end of coupling and drive shaft assembly (5). Remove
coupling and drive shaft assembly (5).

5. If necessary, remove three bolts (6), and remove coupling (7) from drive shaft assembly (5).
Repeat procedure at the other end of drive shaft assembly (5).

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the power train oil pump drive shaft.

6. If replacements were needed, put coupling (7) in position on drive shaft assembly (5), and install
three bolts (6). Repeat procedure at the other end of drive shaft assembly (5).

7. Put the coupling and drive shaft assembly (5) in position, and install three bolts (4) at each end.

8. Put the two halves of the drive shaft guard into position, and install two of the bolts that hold the
two halves together.

9. Rotate the drive shaft guard 180°, put the wiring harness in position and install two bolts (2).
Bolts (2) hold the wiring harness clips to the guard, and fasten the two halves of the drive shaft
guard together.

10. Put bracket (1) in position, and install eight bolts (3) that fasten it to the drive shaft guard and to
the frame.

End By:

a. install main drive shaft

b. install bottom guard

Start By:

a. remove main drive shaft

1. Disconnect the hose that attaches to connector (2).

2. Remove bolt (3) and the washer. Remove coupling assembly (1).

3. Remove two of bolts (4), and install two 7/16 "-14guide bolts. Remove remaining bolts (4).
Slide cover out on the guide bolts, and remove cover (5). The weight of cover (5) is 21 kg (46 lb).

4. Remove O-ring seal (7) from the cover.

5. Use tool (A), and remove lip-type seal (6) from cover (5).

6. Perform Step 1 through Step 5 in the reverse order to install the engine to transmission adapter
group.

End By:

1. Remove the seat and the floor panel under the seat.

2. Remove four bolts (2). Remove the plate, and slide boot (3) out of the opening.

3. Remove nut (1), and remove the control lever assembly.

4. Remove two springs (4) from bellcrank (7). Loosen the bolt, and remove bellcrank (7). Remove
nut (5), and disconnect rod (6) from the valve. Be sure all dirt and debris is removed before the gear
shift control is removed.

5. Remove 11 bolts (8) and the gear shift control.

NOTE: Make sure the control levers are correctly aligned with the guides inside the transmission
when the gear shift control is installed.

6. Perform Step 1 through Step 5 in reverse order to install the gear shift control.

Clutch Control Valve (Direct Drive)

Remove And Install Clutch Control Valve (Direct Drive)

1. Remove the two bolts and the cover that protect switch (3). Be sure all dirt and debris is removed
before the transmission cover is removed.

2. Disconnect two wires from switch (3).

3. Remove the bolt and clip that hold tube (1) to the case.

4. Loosen bolts (2), and slide the lever off of the shaft.

5. Weight of the clutch control valve is 32 kg (71 lb). Use two people, and remove sixteen bolts (5)
and the clutch control valve and gasket. Do not remove bolt (4) since it does not hold the clutch
control valve to the transmission cover.

6. Remove two O-ring seals (7) and three tubes (6) and O-ring seals from the transmission cover.

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the clutch cover valve.

7. Inspect the condition of the seals and gasket, and replace if necessary.

8. Put two O-ring seals (7) in place on the transmission cover. Install the O-ring seals on three tubes
(6), and install them into the transmission cover.

9. Put the gasket in position on the clutch control valve. Put the clutch control valve in position, and
install sixteen bolts (5).

10. Install the lever onto the shaft, and tighten bolt (2). Install the bolt and clip that hold tube (1) to
the case.

11. Connect two wires to switch (3). Install the cover that protects switch (3).

Disassemble And Assemble Clutch Hydraulic Control Valves


(Direct Drive)

Start By:

a. remove clutch hydraulic control valves (direct drive)

1. Remove 11 bolts (1) and valve assembly (3) from manifold assembly (2). For assembly, tighten
bolts (1) to a torque of 32 ± 4 N·m (24 ± 3 lb ft).

2. Remove the plate that goes between the valve and the manifold assembly.

3. Loosen two bolts (4) evenly to release the spring pressure behind plate (5). Remove bolts (4).
For assembly, tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 32 ± 4 N·m (24 ± 3 lb ft).

4. Remove spring (8), slug (7) and spool assembly (6) from valve assembly (3).

5. Remove spring (11), spool assembly (10) and slug (9) from valve assembly (3).

6. Use tool (A), and remove retaining ring (15). Remove guide (13), spring (14) and bold (12) from
spool assembly (6).

7. Remove spacers (16) from spool assembly (10).

8. Use tool (A), and remove retaining ring (18). Remove retainer (17), spring (20) and plunger (19)
from spool assembly (10).

9. Put identification marks on links (21) and (22) for assembly purposes.

10. Measure the distance from the valve assembly to the end of links (21) and (22). Record the
dimensions for assembly purposes.

11. Loosen jam nuts (23), and remove links (21) and (22) from the valve assembly. For assembly,
install links (21) and (22), and adjust the dimensions that were measured in Step 10. Tighten two
jam nuts (23) to a torque of 34 ± 4 N·m (25 ± 3 lb ft).

There is spring pressure behind cover (26) which may cause the
assembly to fly apart when the three bolts are removed. To prevent

possible personal injury, longer bolts should be used to release the


spring pressure.

12. Remove one bolt (24), and install one bolt from tooling (B). Remove bolt (27), and install the
other bolt from tooling (B). Remove bolt (25). Loosen the two bolts from tooling (B) evenly, and
release the spring pressure behind cover (26).

13. Remove spring (29) and spool assembly (28) from location (X) of valve assembly (3).

14. Use tool (C), and remove retaining ring (32) from spool assembly (28). Remove ring (33),
spring (34), shim (30) and guide (31) from spool assembly (28).

15. Remove slug (38), spool (37), spring (36) and spring (35) from valve assembly (3).

16. Remove retainer (40), spring (44), spring (43), retainer (42) and piston (41) from the valve
assembly.

17. Use a hammer and a punch, and remove pin (39) from valve assembly (3).

18. Remove retaining ring (46), retainer (48), spring (45) and spring (47) from piston (41).

19. Use a hammer and a punch, and remove dowel (49), and remove the stop from valve assembly
(3).

20. Remove valve assembly (50) from valve assembly (3). For assembly, put SAE 30 oil on the
inner bore of valve assembly (3) before valve assembly (50) and the O-ring seal are installed.

21. Remove the dowel, the ball and the O-ring seal from valve assembly (50).

22. Remove the nut that holds rod end (53) to lever assembly (52). Disconnect the rod end from the
lever assembly.

23. Remove key (54) from shaft (56). Remove bolt (55). Remove shaft (56) from manifold
assembly (2) and the lever. Remove the lever and rod and assembly from manifold assembly (2).

24. Remove bolt (51) and lever assembly (52) from the manifold assembly.

25. Use tool (D), and remove two retaining rings (57). Remove washer (59) and dowel (58).

26. Remove shaft (61) from lever assembly (52). Remove seal (60) from shaft (61). For assembly,
put SAE 30 oil on the inner bore of lever assembly (52) before shaft (61) and seal (60) are
installed.

27. Use tool (D), and remove three retaining rings (63) and roller (64) from dowel (62). Remove
dowel (62) from the lever assembly.

28. Use tooling (E), and remove the two bearings from the lever assembly. For assembly, drive on
the stamped end of the two bearings. Install them to a depth of 3 ± 1 mm (.118 ± .039 in) below the
outer face of lever assembly (52).

29. Use tooling (E), and remove two bearings (65) and two lip-type seals (66) from the manifold
assembly. For assembly of bearings (65) and seals (66), use the following steps:

a. Drive on the stamped end of two bearings (65). Install them to a depth of 13.0 ± 0.5 mm (.512
± .020 in) below the outer face of the manifold assembly.

b. Install two lip-type seals (66) with the lip of the seal toward the inside of the manifold assembly
as shown in illustration C3548P1.

30. Remove plug (70) and O-ring seal. Remove retainer (69), spring (68) and lube relief poppet
(67) from the manifold assembly.

31. Remove start switch (71) and O-ring seal from the manifold assembly.

NOTE: The following steps are for assembly of the clutch hydraulic control valves (direct drive)

NOTICE

Do not use caustic (corrosive) materials to clean any parts in this valve
group. Caustic materials will cause corrosion and damage to parts.

32. Make sure all of the parts of the clutch hydraulic control valves are clean. Inspect all seals, and
replace if necessary.

33. Put SAE 30 oil on all parts of the valves before assembly.

34. Do Step 1 through Step 31 in the reverse order for assembly of the valves.

35. Use tool (F) to check and adjust the valve. See Specifications, Form No. SENR4173 for the
adjustment procedure.

End By:

a. install clutch hydraulic control valves (direct drive)
