Shutdown 101 Fan Fault on a VS Series Compressor

If the AirSmart controller on a VS series compressor has a shutdown indication of 101 Fan Fault this is indicating
the temperature switch in one of the cooling fans is open. It could also be caused by a loose wire or failed input
on the controller. This fault is only associated with the fixed speed cooling fans, either the main motor cooling
fan or package cooling fans. The variable speed cooling fans used on the VS80-250 units have a different fault
indication. However the main motor cooling fan on these units will still present the 101 fault if any of the above
mentioned items occurs.

The first step to troubleshooting this fault is to check the wiring to see where the 24 VDC signal is being lost.
Shown below is a portion of a wiring diagram with the input associated with this fault. Terminal strip B2 has a
jumper from the +24 VDC power supply. The voltage is then fed through each cooling fan temperature switch
back to terminal strip A2. Then back to the input on the controller. If voltage is present at both locations below
check it at the AirSmart controller. If voltage is present here and the fault won’t reset the input on the
controller has failed. If this is the case the wiring needs to be inspected very thoroughly. The control voltage
wiring coming in contact with the higher voltage motor wiring could cause the input on the controller to fail.

Terminal A2 should have +24VDC if

all the connections are good and
the switches are closed.

Terminal B2 should will always

have +24VDC if the power is on and
the connections associated with
the power supply are good.
If there is +24VDC at terminal B2 but not on A2 then there either a loose connection or one of the temperature
switches is open. The connections are in the junction boxes for the fan motors.

Shown below is an example of the typical connections for a main motor cooling fan.

Shown below is an example of the typical connections for a package cooling fan. Note on units with more than
one cooling fan each fan needs to be checked.
