pictorial models.
Differentiates solid figures from plane figures. (M6GE-IIIa-28)
Identifies the faces of a solid figure. (M6GE-IIIb-30)

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

 visualize and describe the different solid figures: cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder,
cone and sphere;
 differentiate solid figures from plane figures; and
 identify the faces of solid figures.

Lesson 1- Solid Figures

What is it
Polyhedron is a solid figure whose sides are all polygons. Each side is called face. Two faces
that intersect in a line segment is called an edge. Two edges that intersect in a
point is called a vertex.
Solid figures are three-dimensional figures that have length, width and height. The different
solid figures are the prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and sphere.
PRISM – A prism is a polyhedron that has two congruent parallel faces called bases. There
are many different kinds of prisms. A prism is named according to the shape of its
base.
PYRAMID – is a polyhedron whose base is a polygon. Similar to prism, pyramid is also
named according to the shape of its base. Its lateral faces are triangles.

Name Shape of the Definition Example

Base
Triangular prism Triangle Composed of two triangular
bases and three rectangular
latera faces
Rectangular prism Rectangular Composed of two rectangular
bases and four rectangular
lateral faces
Cube Square A cube is a prism with a square
base. All its faces are square.

Pentagonal prism Pentagon Has two pentagonal bases and

five rectangular lateral faces

Triangular pyramid Triangle Has one triangular base and

three triangular lateral faces.
1
Rectangular Rectangle The lateral faces are all
pyramid triangles. The base is a
rectangle.
Square pyramid Square The lateral faces are all
triangles. The base is a square.

Pentagonal pyramid Pentagon The lateral faces are all

triangles. The base is pentagon.

Other solid figures have curved surfaces. These are the cylinder, cone and sphere.

Name Definition Example

Cylinder Has two circular bases that are congruent
and parallel connected by a curved surface

Cone Has one circular base and a vertex

connected by a curved surface

Sphere Is a curved surface of points that are all of

the same distance from the center.

Examples of real objects that represent solid figures.

Objects Solid Figures
Basketball. Globe, balloon sphere
Water jug, can cylinder
Box Rectangular prism
Dice, cube
Ice cream cone, funnel cone
Camping tent pyramid

What’s More
Directions: Choose a word from the box to correctly answer each question. Write your
answer on the answer sheet.

solid figure pentagonal pyramid

1. The shape of the lateral faces of a pyramid.

2. A three-dimensional figure that has length, width and height
3. Has five triangular lateral faces.
4. All points at the surface are of equal distance from the center

Lesson 2 – Solid Figures and Plane Figures

What is it

PLANE FIGURES:
 Are closed figures whose points lie on the same surface.
 They are flat and have only two dimensions – the length and width
Examples: triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids

SOLID FIGURES:
 Are three-dimensional objects having length, width and height
Examples: prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, spheres

3
What’s More
Directions: Identify the following as to plane figure or solid figure. Write PF for plane figure
and SF for solid figure. Write your answer on your answer sheet.

1. It is a three-dimensional object.

2.

3. An object that is flat and has only two dimensions – the length and width.
