STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL

1. Title :

Solar Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production From Sulphide Wastewater (or)

Wastewater Using Via Water Splitting Methods
Name : SANTHAKUMAR T

Email : [email protected]

Application No : 2024774460

2. Area of Research & Domain of Research :

Environmental Engineering & Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

3. Objective of the Proposal :

The major objective of this project is to find the suitable photocatalyst for
photocatalytic water splitting. a number of suitable catalysts are shortlisted and
synthesized using corresponding preparation methods. The synthesized catalysts
are characterized using various techniques to study their properties. An
Experimental Setup is used for carrying out Photocatalytic Water Splitting using
all the Synthesized Photocatalysts. The Amount of H 2 evolved for each Catalyst
is measured and compared with other Catalysts and the best Catalyst which
produces large amount of H2 is reported.

4. Background / Short Description :

Clean Energy Hydrogen can be produced from a variety of feed

stocks. These include fossile resources, such as natural gas and coal, as well as
renewable resources like biomass and water with input from renewable energy
sources ( E.g. Sunlight, wind, wave or hydropower ). A various of process
technologies can be used including chemical, biological, electrolytic,
photocatalytic and thermochemical. However, for H2 Generation each
technology is in a different stage of development and each offers unique
opportunities benefits and challenges. Hence, there is a detail of need for H 2
production for a clean energy environment.
Molecular Hydrogen by splitting of water: A long term perceptive and
prospective technique:

Molecular Hydrogen can also be produced from the splitting of water

either through sunlight (photolysis) or by electricity (electrolysis). The Principle
of Photo electrolysis of water is the process whereby light is used to split water
directly into hydrogen and oxygen. The incident light excites the intrinsic
ionization over the band gap of photocatalyst material which leads to the
formation of electrons and holes in the medium. The holes split the water
molecule into O2 and H+. Simultaneously, the generated electrons in the
conduction band reduce the H+ ions into molecular Hydrogen(H2). In general,
the efficiency of water splitting is generally determined by the band gap, band
structure and electron transferring process. The reaction scheme of photo
splitting of water is depicted below,

2hυ 2e- + 2hole+

2hole+ + H2O (liquid) 1/2 O2 (Gas) + 2H+

2H+ + 2e- H2 (Gas)

5. Expected Results :

The need for an alternative clean energy and the suitability of photocatalytic water
splitting method. The major criteria for selection the photocatalysts efficiency in H2
production and large amount Hydrogen Production.
