Magicians
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Selected Themes from the Motion Picture : French Horn Solo, Duet, Trio (Instrumental Series)
Objective: Factor expressions using the Greatest Common Factor Method (GCF).
Find the GCF for each set of following numbers.
Hint: list the factors and find the greatest match.
a) 2, 6
a) -25, -40
a) 6, 18
a) 16, 32
a) 3, 8
No common factors?
GCF =1
Find the GCF for each set of following numbers.
Hint: list the factors and find the greatest match.
a) x, x2
a) x2, x3
a) xy, x2y
a) 2x3, 8x2
a) 3x3, 6x2
a) 4x2, 5y3
No common factors?
GCF =1
Greatest Common Factors
aka GCF’s
Factor out the GCF for each polynomial:
Factor out means you need the GCF times the remaining parts.
a) 2x + 4y
b) 5a – 5b
b) 18x – 6y
b) 2m + 6mn
b) 5x2y – 10xy
Objective: Factor expressions using the Greatest Common Factor Method (GCF).
Factoring Trinomials of the Form x2 + bx + c
(x – 3)(x – 8) = x2 – 11x + 24
Note that this trinomial results in the product of two binomials whose first term is x, and second
term is a number (including its sign).
• 𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 30
• 𝑥 2 − 11𝑥 + 24
• 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 10
• 3𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 30
• 3𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 + 4
• 𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 + 64 =
• 16𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 1 =
• 4𝑥 3 − 40𝑥 2 + 100𝑥
• 4a2 – 20a + 25
• a2 – b2 = (a + b)(a - b)
Example: x2 – 4
• 9x2 – 16
• x2 – 16
• 36x2 – 25
a) 𝑥 + 2𝑦 2 3
b) 𝑥 + 2𝑦 2 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥𝑦 2 + 4𝑦 4
c) 𝑥 − 2𝑦 2 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑦 2 + 4𝑦 4
d) 𝑥 + 2𝑦 2 𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 4
