Global Citizenship Concern:
Fash Fashion
Rationale for interest:
Nowadays, the hot issue of fast fashion has been brought into the
limelight...People choose to wear fast fashion because it is affordable,
has cheap manufacturing costs, and releases new trends monthly.
Numerous businesses, like Zara, UNIQLO, and H&M, offer rapid fashion
to their clientele. Fast fashion has an adverse effect on the environment
since it uses too much water and emits too many greenhouse gases. For
instance, the fast fashion sector uses 2000 gallons of water to make a
pair of trousers and around 700 gallons to make a cotton shirt (Crises,
2023). The purpose of this study is to influence consumers' purchasing
habits to reduce the purchase of rapid fashion in order to safeguard the
environment. It also aims to educate the public and companies about
the negative environmental effects of quick fashion.

Problems of Fast Fashion:
Fast fashion is the term for the rapid shift in global fashion trends, which
is a commercial strategy used to create low-cost goods. In the short run,
businesses will push various apparel divisions. For instance, new areas
are typically deconstructed every three months by H&M, ZARA, and
UNIQLO. But still. Numerous issues will arise from fast fashion. Our
organization would want to concentrate on the environmental pollution
created by fast fashion because it is the second greatest polluter in the
world.
A. Polluting while the product is being produced. Factories will need to
create a lot of goods since fast fashion demands a lot of garments in a
short amount of time. Nonetheless, to reduce manufacturing costs,
businesses typically locate their factories in developing nations since
labor and rent are less expensive there. Furthermore, emerging nations
often lessen or disobey environmental protection laws to draw in
manufacturers. It transpires that the method of creating the items
would be detrimental to the environment. For instance, discharging
tainted water into the environment without first treating it and creating
significant pollution.
B. Causing pollution through transport.
Clothes will be shipped all over the world as fast fashion is a worldwide
trend. For instance, transporting raw materials to manufacturers, which
will then send them to various retailers worldwide after they are
produced. Numerous pollutants, including air pollution, will be
produced by all the ships, along with a significant carbon footprint. The
advancement of technology has made it easier for consumers to shop
online and purchase clothing from abroad. However, it creates a fashion
trend that incorporates a variety of brands and styles and leads to
several partnerships. The amount of international shipments will rise
due to this type of fashion trend.
C. Harmful as wasting.
As the icon of fast fashion is ‘fast’, new clothing styles are introduced to
the market as soon as the latest trends are introduced. This kind of
business model encourages people to buy new clothes, just to catch up
with the new trend. Indeed, when people try to catch up with the trend,
the result of it is wasting money and the clothes that are seen as old
trend products. The fact that in Hong Kong, there are about one over
three of the clothes in average have not yet been worn and are thrown
away. These wastes include all energy including the clothing process
such as producing, shipping and washing, which will contribute a lot of
pollution.
Proposed solutions:
Due to the water pollution, air pollution, and climate change caused by
producing clothes. We should not turn a blind eye to this issue
anymore. Little did we know that we had ways to reduce it. According
to my knowledge and the website, there are some things that we can
do.
Personal:
1. Purchase used goods from charity shops and thrift stores
Furthermore, the clients own the authority to select the type, style, and
amount of waste generated by the fabric. Thus, thrift stores such as
HALO and Carousell. The carbon footprint decreased by wearing
environmentally friendly apparel.
2. Buy locally
97% of fashion products are manufactured elsewhere. You are winning
the battle against quick fashion if you can locate products that are
produced and marketed locally! Since transportation may reduce its
carbon dioxide emissions.
School:
1. Increase teaching in accordance with Fast Fashion
As schools are supposed to prepare their pupils to be role models for
the community, they should focus on raising knowledge of
environmentally responsible buying practices in addition to academics.
2. Teach students to identify fast-fashion brands
A clothing business, such as H&M and Zara, is likely to underpay its
employees and disregard environmental concerns if their pricing is too
cheap to be real. instructing students to search for certificates such as
Fair Trade Certified.
Government:
1. Developing a sustainable and morally sound future for the fashion
industry is a significant yet difficult task for the public, business
community, and government.
2. Funding and tax incentives to encourage the onshoring of fashion
manufacturing
