We use the modal verbs can, could, may, would, will and shall for requests, offers, invitations and
permission. Study the table below.
Dialogue

Listen to a dialogue between a host and a guest. Complete the four requests/offers and replies below.

What would you say in the situations below? Use the modal verbs on page one. More than one
answer may be possible.
1. You need to take a short break from your work. Ask your boss for permission. Be polite.
3. You are at a clothes shop. You see a shirt that you really like. Ask the shop assistant to show it to
you.
4. You see an old lady trying to carry some heavy bags. Offer to help her.
5. You have arranged to have lunch with a friend at 2 pm. Ask her if she can meet you at 1 pm
instead.
7. You need to post a letter urgently, but you have no time. Your neighbour is going out. Ask him/her
to do it for you. Be polite.
4 Practice 3: Speaking
Work in pairs or small groups. Take turns using the cue cards to create sentences related to the
prompt. Make sure to use the correct modal verb (can, could, may, would, will, shall) for the situation
described on the card. Discuss your sentences with your partner or group, and try to ask follow-up
questions to keep the conversation going.

Discuss: How you would politely ask to borrow the pen. Use a modal verb to make your
request.
Offering Help
Discuss: How you would offer to help them. Use a modal verb to make your offer.
Discuss: How you would ask your boss for permission to leave early. Use a modal verb to
ask for permission.
Making an Invitation
Discuss: How you would phrase the invitation. Use a modal verb to invite them.
Offering a Lift
Discuss: How you would offer them a lift. Use a modal verb to offer your help.
You are at the dinner table and you need the salt.
Discuss: How you would politely ask someone to pass the salt. Use a modal verb to make
your request.
You are lost in a new city and need to find the nearest train station.
Discuss: How you would ask a stranger for directions. Use a modal verb to make your
request.
Offering a Drink
You have guests at your home and want to offer them something to drink.
Discuss: How you would offer them a choice of drinks. Use a modal verb to make your
offer.
You are carrying heavy bags and need help opening the door.
Discuss: How you would ask someone nearby to help you. Use a modal verb to make
your request.
Making a Suggestion
Discuss: How you would suggest a restaurant. Use a modal verb to make your
suggestion.

4. Practice 3: Speaking
5-15 mins.
Hand out the cue cards to pairs or small groups of students.
Instruct students to take turns discussing the scenarios on the cards and using the appropriate modal verb.
Monitor the activity, offering guidance and corrections as needed.
Conclude the activity by having a few students share their sentences with the class.
This activity helps students practise using modal verbs in everyday situations, enhancing their ability to communicate
politely and effectively in English.
