Assignment 2 – Forces and Motion

Part A: Problem Solving
For each of the problems below, make sure you list given, required, analysis and solution, final statement.

1) A bus starting from rest and undergoing acceleration reaches a velocity of 21.0 m/s[N] in 8.4 s.
Calculate the average acceleration of the bus.

Given and Required

T 1 = 0 m/s, vector v sub 2 = 21.0 m/s [North], Delta t = 8.4 s, vector a sub avg = ?.
Analysis and Solution
the average acceleration = 2.5 m/s^2.

2) A store clerk pushes a parcel on a counter with a force of 7.6 N[W]. The kinetic friction on the parcel is
6.5 N[E]. Both the force of gravity and the normal force have a magnitude of 9.9 N.
a) Draw a Free Body Diagram of the parcel as it is being pushed. Label each of the forces in the
diagram.
b) Calculate the net force acting on the parcel.

7.6-6.5 =1.1 this is the calculate for the net force acting on the parcel

for question a dont know how to draw a diagram on this doc

Part B: Investigation

Activity #1: Net Force Section

● Click on “Net Force”

● Select the checkboxes: Sum of Forces and Values.

● The difference in size of each of the rope’s pullers, correspond to a difference in the magnitude of the
applied force.

Questions:
1) Select one blue 50N person and a 50N red person. Move them up to the rope.
a) Draw a Free Body Diagram of the cart with vector arrows, labels and a box.
b) What is the magnitude and direction of the net force?
c) Click on “Go” and observe the speedometer on the cart. As the cart moves, what is happening with the
speed?

the direction is going both ways equal. the speed stays the same because the same amount of weight is
apllied on both sides
2) Select one blue 150N person, 100N blue person, two 50N red people. Move them up to the rope.
a) Draw a Free Body Diagram of the cart with vector arrows, labels and a box.
b) What is the magnitude and direction of the net force?
c) Click on “Go” and observe the speedometer on the cart. As the car moves, what is happening with the
speed?
tthe magnitude is 250N and the direction of forec is on the left. the speed keeps going up

3) Select 5 people red or blue. Move them up to the rope. Draw a Free Body Diagram with vector arrows,
labels and a box below.
a) Draw a Free Body Diagram of the cart with vector arrows, labels and a box.
b) What is the magnitude and direction of the net force?
c) Click on “Go” and observe the speedometer on the car. As the cart moves, what is happening with the
speed?
300Nis the magnitude and the direction is left .the speed slow goes up the people i put was 3blue and 2 red
blue was 150 100 50 red was 150 100

Conclusion
4) Explain how a Free Body Diagram allows you to solve force problems.

it allowed me to see more clearly how a real rope war will go depending on how big or small the people are
who will win or where the force is going to be pulled on first

5) Explain the cause of the speed’s behaviour.

depending on how many people and there weght id there is less people but there weght more than the
othere people one the other side its go to be that the people with more weith force is going to win it all comes
to the weght which side has more weight
Activity # 2: Motion Section
● At the bottom of the simulation, click on “Motion”
● For each question, make sure the checkboxes are selected:
Forces, Values, Masses and Speed

In

Questions:
1) Under the “Applied Forces” click the arrow until there is 50 N of applied force. Watch and observe until the
person who is pushing the cart falls. Describe in detail what occurs with forces and what happens to the
speed.

with the force he can push it but more force is pushed back 0on hime so he slowes down at an equal pase .
and the speed is slow going up

2) Select the reset button. Add the girl on top of the box. There is now a total mass of 90kg. Under the
“Applied Forces” click the arrow until there is 50 N of applied force. Watch and observe until the person
who is pushing the cart falls. Describe in detail what occurs with forces and what happens to the speed.

he slowle pushed it but there is more force pushed on him that is why he is so slow and the speed increses
3) Now add in another 100N of “Applied Forces” for a total of 150N. Watch and observe until the person
pushing the cart falls. Describe what happens with forces and what happens to the speed.

the force is is good because he is appliing more forces than there is things and the speed goes up fast

4) Select a combination of 3 objects and an “Applied Force” of your choosing. Watch and observe until the
person who is pushing the cart falls. Describe what happens with forces and what happens to the speed.

with the force it’s good because he is using more applied pressure that there is things so it goes up fast

Conclusion:
5) What happens to the speed of the cart while the person is pushing it?
the speed increases

6) What happens to the speed of the cart after the person pushing it falls?
the speed decreases

7) Explain the observations in # 5 and # 6.

I put two box and the girl all together that is 140 and I applied 500 applies force and then the speed increase
fast because of how much applied pressure he is putting in and with not the much applied pressure the
speed will not go up as fast .
Activity # 3: Friction
● At the bottom of the simulation, click on Friction

● For each question, make sure the checkboxes are selected: Forces, Values, Masses and Speed

Questions:
1) Under the “Applied Forces” click the arrow until there is 50 N of applied force. Watch and observe what
is happening. Describe in detail what occurs with forces and what happens to the speed.
the speed slowly goes down and the force is is pushing him left

2) Now add in additional 100N of “Applied Forces” for a total of 150N.

(a) Describe what happens with forces and what happens to the speed?
the speed slowly goes up and the force is pushing right

(b) What is the magnitude and direction of the friction force?

the magnitude is 103 and the direction the friction force is pushing left

(c) What is the sum of the forces?

the sum of the fire is 47
a
3) Change the friction to the maximum amount.
(a) What is the magnitude and direction of the friction force?
the magnitude of the force is 150 and the direction of the friction force is left

(b) What is the sum of the forces?

the sum of the force is 0

(c) Describe the speed.

the speed don’t move a bit
4) Now you select. Choose the following:
(a) Friction force= 109_________________
(b) Applied force=150__________________
(c) Sum of the forces=41______________
(d) Acceleration=0.29_______________________
(e) Describe what happens with forces and what happens to the speed?
the speed slowly goes up and the force is going right

(f) What is the sum of the forces?

the sum is 40

(g) Describe the speed and acceleration.

the ecceleration stayed at 0.29 and does not go down the speed slowly goes up

Conclusion
5) How does friction, acceleration, speed and net force relate to each other? Explain.
when I am in the gym I use friction eccelaration when doing reps so I got more tension on what body part am
working on.

6) Describe an example of friction, speed and net force in your life.

7) When Fnet = 0, the forces acting on the object are balanced. Describe an example when we would
want Fnet= 0 N. Be specific and detailed.
when I’m pushing something would like me and it to be balanced so I don’t have a hard time pushing it

8) When Fnet ≠ 0, the forces acting on the object are unbalanced. Describe an example when we would
want Fnet ≠ 0. Be specific and detailed.
