A. Presenting the New Lesson
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
Good morning, students! Today, we are going to
discuss about Evaluation of Algebraic Expressions
and Law of Exponents. But, before I present to you
the concepts related to our lesson, let’s have a
review first from our previous topic.

Questions: Answers:
1. What do you call to mathematical statement 1. Verbal phrase
that is expressed in words?
2. It is also known as Mathematical 2. Mathematical phrase
Expression, is a group of mathematical
symbols, which may include numbers,
variables, operators. 3. X+3
3. Translate this verbal phrase to mathematical
phrase.
 Three more than the number
4. the sum of a number and 5
4. Translate this mathematical expression to
verbal phrase.
 X+5

Very good, class! Let’s give yourselves a five clap.

The students will clap their hands.
Are you ready for today’s lesson?
Yes, ma’am!
So now, let’s proceed to our new topic.

B. Presenting Examples/Instances of the Lesson

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
To evaluate an algebraic expression means to
substitute the given specific values for the
variables and then simplify the resulting numerical
expressions. In the algebraic expression 5a, a is
the variable. The expression has a unique value for
every value of a.

Example 1 Evaluate 5 a if a = 6

Solution: Replace a with 6.

5 a = 5(6)
= 30

Example 2 Find the value of ( x−2 y ) +4 if

x=20 and y=3 .

Solution: Substitute 20 for x and 3 for y

( x−2 y ) +4 = [ ( 20−2 ( 3 ) ) ] + 4
= [ 20−6 ] + 4
= 14+ 4
= 18

Example 3
Complete the table.
n 1 2
2 n−1 2 ( 1 )−1 2 ( 2 )−1
or 1 or 3

Example 4 The formula for the area ( A) of a

rectangle is A=lw , l is the length
and w is the width. What is the
area
of a rectangle whose length is 23
cm and the width is 12 cm.

Solution: A=lw
= (23)(12)
= 276 sq cm
Steps to follow in evaluating algebraic
expressions:
Perform the operations. If grouping is involved,
work on the innermost parentheses first, then do
the following:
a.) Simplify terms with exponents.
b.) Multiply and divide from left to right.
c.) Add and subtract from left to right.

Remember:
Multiplication in an algebraic expression can be
done in three ways.
1. Writing the factors side by side
Example: 5 mn
2. Using dots between factors
Example: 2 a . c
3. Using parentheses to separate factors
Example: 4 (x + y )

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #2

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
Okay class, do you have any questions regarding No, ma’am.
on our first topic?

Okay, let us now proceed to our next topic which is

the Laws of Exponent.

Who among you there has an idea if what an Exponent is …

exponent is?

Very good! So, Exponent is a symbol above and to

the right of mathematical expression to indicate the
operation of raising to a power.
Laws of Exponent

A. Product and Quotient Rules

For any a , and positive integers m and n ; a m ∙n=am+ n

We simply copy the base and add the exponent.

Examples:
1. a 3 ∙ a2= ( a ∙ a∙ a )( a ∙ a )=a5
Similarly, a 3 ∙ a2=a3+ 2=a5

2. 3 4 ∙ 33=( 3 ∙ 3 ∙3 ∙ 3 ) (3 ∙ 3 ∙3 )=37
Similarly, 3 4 ∙ 33=3 4+ 3=37

For all integers m and n , n and a are nonzero

m
a m−n
number: n =a ; when m>n
a

We simply copy the base and subtract the

exponent.

Examples:
6
6 2 X X ∙ X ∙ X∙ X ∙ X∙ X 4
1. X ÷ X = 2 = =X
X X∙ X
Similarly, X ÷ X = X 6−2=X 4
6 2

5
5 4 2 2∙ 2 ∙2 ∙ 2∙ 2
2. 2 ÷2 = 4
= =2
2 2∙ 2∙ 2 ∙2
Similarly, 25 ÷2 4=25−4 =2
