PREAMBLE

This Guideline is on Seminar Assessment and Practicum Exercise for Undergraduate and
Master’s Students in the Department of Educational Foundations. It has been developed as a
tool to guide students in seminar writing and presentation as well as in how to conduct
practicum exercise, in order to ensure uniformity of standards across the board. The
Guideline is also designed to guide the assessors on the scoring criteria. The Guideline
contains four major sections numbered A-D.
Section A is guidelines for seminar presentation and assessment for undergraduate
students. This section is mainly for the undergraduate seminar courses, that is, ECE420
Seminar in Early Childhood Education and PED423 Seminar in Primary Education. The
score sheet for grading the undergraduate seminars is appended herein.
Section B is guidelines for seminar presentation and assessment for Master’s
students. This section is for Master’s seminar courses, that is, EDA823 Seminar in
Educational Administration and Planning, EGC810 Seminar in Guidance and Counselling,
and EDT823 Seminar in Educational Technology. The score sheet for grading Master’s
seminars is appended herein.
Section C is guidelines for practicum exercise for Master’s students in Educational
Administration and Planning, that is, EDA812 Practicum in Educational Management. The
score sheet for grading the practicum exercise is appended herein.
Section D is guidelines for Master’s students in Guidance & Counselling, that is,
EGC814 Practicum and Directed Field Experience. The score sheet for grading the practicum
exercise is appended herein.
It is suggested that this Guideline booklet should be:
• circulated to all Study Centres for transmission to students and supervisors/assessors
for implementation and strict adherence to the guidelines.
• made available to programme Coordinators handling seminar courses.
• uploaded into NOUN e-courseware so that students can also have direct access to the
Guidelines, especially students at 400 and 800 levels.

GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING PRACTICUM EXERCISE AND ASSESSMENT IN

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
➢ EGC814 Practicum and Directed Field Experience
By
Prof. Augustine C. Ukwueze

Philosophy of M. Ed (Guidance and Counselling) Programme

Guidance and Counselling is designed for students interested in academic programme in counselling in
schools or the community, including private practice. The programme has a primary objective of
producing counselors who are competent professionals, trained to meet the challenges of the 21st century
and beyond. Our goal is to produce professionals who will be able to combine the strategies of research
methodology with analysis, definition, assessment, treatment and evaluation of situations to manage the
various socially maladaptive behaviours plaguing our nation.
Goal of Practicum Exercise
EGC 814 is a 3-unit practical course designed to equip students with the practical skills and knowledge
necessary to practice as trained counsellors. It involves the conduct of individual and group counselling
sessions in approved settings like schools, prisons, hospitals/clinics, industries, etc. under supervision.
Purpose of Practicum in Counsellor Education
Guidance and counselling is a humanitarian service which provides an opportunity for people to be
assisted by trained individuals called counsellors. At school setting, it provides academic, vocational,
psychological, and social services. In non-school settings such as prisons, industries, and agencies,
guidance and counselling is seen as a social service that helps people to be well adjusted in their work
place, live a fruitful retirement life, and enjoy meaningful rehabilitation especially those in the prisons.
In view of this, students are expected to be trained in the art of handling clients in both school and non-
school settings. As a result, the purpose of practicum in counsellor education is to equip counsellor
trainees with the skills and knowledge required for counselling in school and non-school settings.
Specifically, the objectives of practicum in counsellor education are to:
• Equip student counsellors with the skills necessary for counselling in real life situations.
• Integrate academic knowledge with acquired skills in a real life situation.
• Expose student counsellors to practical aspect of guidance and counselling.

16
• Provide student counsellors with the knowledge of applying required theories and skills during
professional practice.
• Enable student counsellors to acquire professional competency during training.

Duration
The duration for practicum in guidance and counselling for M. Ed students shall be ten (10) weeks.
Expectations from the Students
Each student undergoing practicum in guidance and counselling is expected to:
1. Choose a place of convenience either a school or a non-school setting for his/her practicum.
2. Write weekly report for his/her supervisor.
3. Work harmoniously with his/her supervisor in order to achieve the goal of the practicum
exercise.
4. Abide by the rules and regulations governing his/her school or organization.
5. Submit a final spiral-bounded report to his/her supervisor for grading.
6. Submit a taped counselling session during the period as a case study along with his/her report.
7. Fill and submit Practicum Log Form duly endorsed by his/her supervisor.

The Role of Supervisors

Each person assigned to supervise students on practicum is expected to:
1. Visit his/her students on weekly basis.
2. Guide his/her students on how to acquire the right skills and knowledge necessary for
counselling in real life.
3. Assist students in developing positive working relationships with staff of his/her host
organizations.
4. Grade his/her students’ reports, including tapes.
5. Submit the students’ reports along with their compiled grades to the study centre that appointed
him/her.
6. Submit student’s evaluation form along with the report and grade.

The Role of Study Centre Directors

The study centre directors in conjunction with their student counsellors are saddled with the
responsibility of coordinating EDU 814: Practicum and Directed Field Experience for M. Ed (Guidance
and Counselling) in their various centres. Specifically, the study centre directors are to:
1. Approve students’ chosen areas of choice for practicum placement.
2. Recruit and assign supervisors to students for their practicum.
3. Reproduce the assessment or evaluation form attached for supervisors.
4. Give each supervisor assessment or evaluation forms for his/her supervisees.
5. Collect supervisors’ confidential reports of each student.
