Verb tenses (present, past, future)


Hour 1: Introduction and Practice
1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)
 Activity: Sentence Sorting
o "I eat breakfast," "She played soccer," "We will go to the
park").
o Have them sort the sentences into three categories:
Present, Past, and Future.
o Discuss their reasoning briefly.
2. Direct Instruction: Verb Tenses (20 minutes)
 Present Tense: Actions happening now or regularly.
o Example: "I walk to school every day."
o Variations: Simple present, present continuous.
 Past Tense: Actions that already happened.
o Example: "I walked to school yesterday."
o Variations: Simple past, past continuous.
 Future Tense: Actions that will happen.
o Example: "I will walk to school tomorrow."
o Variations: Simple future, future continuous.
3. Guided Practice (30 minutes)
 Activity 1: Fill in the Blanks
o Provide sentences with missing verbs. Students must fill
in the blanks with the correct tense.
 Example: "I ___ (eat) pizza yesterday." -> "I ate
pizza yesterday."

 Activity 2: Sentence Transformation


o Write a sentence in one tense and ask students to
rewrite it in the other two tenses.
 Example:
 Present: "She dances."
 Past: "She danced."
 Future: "She will dance."

 Activity: Tense Flip Story


o Students write a short story in the present tense.
Halfway through, they switch to past tense, and for the
conclusion, they use the future tense.
o Example: "Today, I walk to the park. Yesterday, I played
soccer there. Tomorrow, I will bring my dog to play."
7. Review and Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
 Recap key points about each tense.
 Ask students to share one sentence for each tense before
leaving.

Homework:
 Write 5 sentences using each tense (15 total).
 Identify the tense in a short paragraph provided by the
teacher.

 Past: "I drank tea."

o Present: "They are swimming in the pool."

 Future: "They will be swimming in the pool."

4. Independent Practice: Verb Tense Story Examples
Story Prompt:
"Yesterday, I ___ (wake) up early. I ___ (eat) breakfast and ___ (go)
to the park. Right now, I ___ (sit) under a tree and ___ (write) in my
notebook. Tomorrow, I ___ (meet) my friends here, and we ___
(have) a picnic."
Correct Answer:
"Yesterday, I woke up early. I ate breakfast and went to the park.

5. Group Activity: Verb Tense Relay Examples


 Verb Prompts:
1. "Jump" in past tense → "Jumped"
2. "Sing" in future tense → "Will sing"
3. "Run" in present continuous tense → "Is running / Are
running"
4. "Talk" in past continuous tense → "Was talking / Were
talking"

6. Creative Writing: Tense Flip Story Example


 Example Story:
"Today, I go to the library to borrow a book. I find a fascinating
story about space travel. Yesterday, I read another book about
ancient Egypt, and it was incredible. Tomorrow, I will start
reading my new book and imagine myself as an astronaut
exploring distant planets."
