Project 2: Team 3 IRB Protocol

1. Procedures and Methodology

1.To begin the study, participants will sit at a working computer. Groups 1 and 3 will only read
words and Groups 2 and 4 will read the words and draw all words shown. The same list will be
used for all groups.
2. Researchers will provide all participants in both drawing and non-drawing conditions with
lined notebook paper to recall words. For the drawing condition, researchers will also provide a
small booklet of blank pages to each participant and will instruct the participants to draw an
image for each word presented.
3. After the participants receive a number and get all their materials, researchers will explain
what the participants’s tasks are. Researchers will introduce themselves to the participants and
tell them, “Hello everyone, thank you for being here today. You all were invited to participate in
this research study that is aimed at understanding recall for a list of words. You were selected as
possible participants because you volunteered to participate through CSUSM’s Human
Participant Pool. Please listen to the following instructions carefully and feel free to ask
questions you may have before beginning the experiment. Today we will be running a memory
test on recalling a list of words. You will be shown 30 words.. An automatic timer of 15 seconds
per word will begin right away. Once the stop slide has been reached, you will be instructed to
write down all the words you can remember on the given blank sheet of lined paper.”
5. For the drawing group specifically, researchers will tell participants, “Draw an image on each
piece of paper corresponding to the word you see”. The researchers will demonstrate an example
for the participants. The participants will then be told, “When you see a new word on your
screen, please begin drawing your image for that word. Don’t worry if you do not finish your
drawing within the 15 seconds. By the end, all pages of your booklet should be filled. Once you
reach the ‘STOP’ slide, put the small booklet underneath your keyboard and immediately write
down the words you remember on the blank sheet of lined paper provided. When you are
finished, flip your paper over and wait for further instructions.”
6. It will take each group approximately 8 minutes to finish the experiment. Once the participants
get to the end of the powerpoint, they will immediately write down all the words from the list
shown that they remember on their piece of paper.

2. Participant Debriefing or Feedback.

“Our experiment tests individual's abilities to recall words based on their memory and encoding
strategies. For the groups that did not draw, they will be told, “You were shown a list of different
words because we wanted you to try to remember as many words as you can. You may remember
that some words were colored and some were not. For example, money is green and was colored
green. Whereas the word firetruck is associated with red but was colored blue in the list. This
color association with words is known as congruency. We wanted to see if congruent words that
correspond with a color would help aid recall versus if the word was neutral, or just colored
black.” For the groups that did draw, they will be told, “You were shown a list of different
colored words because we wanted you to try to remember as many words as you can. You may
remember that some words were colored and some were not. For example, money is green and
was colored green. Whereas the word firetruck is associated with red but was colored blue in
some lists. This color association with words is known as congruency. We wanted to see if
congruent words or words that correspond with a color, would help aid recall versus if the word
was neutral, or just colored black. Additionally, we asked you to draw because we wanted to see
if drawing the words would increase aid for recall of words remembered.”

3. Safeguard Procedures to Minimize Risks.

To maintain confidentiality, all responses will be anonymous and confidential. Data that is
collected from participants will not include any personal information. There are minimal risks
and inconveniences to participating in this study. One risk of this study is the groups that are not
drawing may experience boredom during the experiment. To minimize this risk, participants can
opt out of the study at any time. This risk is considered not extreme because in general,
participants experience boredom in class or when completing homework anyways. Additionally,
to prevent any sort of emotional or triggering words, participants will only be exposed to
concrete words that are not emotionally arousing such as money or firetruck.

4. Study Benefits
A direct benefit for the participants is receiving HPP credit for participating in the study. Another
benefit of the study is that participants will be able to choose a convenient scheduled time to
participate in the study and it will be held in a private classroom. Currently, there is not too much
research on the Stroop effect on one’s semantic knowledge structure. This study adds to the
research on semantic memory with congruent and incongruent words, with and without visual
aid. Future research could focus on verbal suppression and its effects on remembering congruent,
incongruent, and neutral words. Overall, the benefits for participating in this experiment exceed
the risks.
