Lesson 1-9: Patterns, Equations and Graphs

1-9.1 – Identifying Solutions of a Two-Variable Equation

Sometimes the value of one variable is determined on the value of the other. These are usually referred to as
multi-variable equations, meaning more than one variable. To determine if a pair of values is the solution to an
equation you need to plug both into the equation and see if they create a true equation.

Examples:
Is ( 3 , 10 ) a solution of y=4 x ? No, b/c 10 ≠ 4 (3)
Is (2 ,−1) a solution of y=1−x Yes, b/c −1=1−2
Is (4 , 9) a solution of y=2 x +1 Yes, b/c 9=2 ( 4 )+1

1-9.2 – Using a Table, an Equation and a Graph

Both Carrie and her sister Kim were born on October 25, but Kim was born 2 years before Carrie. How can you
represent the relationship between Carrie’s age and Kim’s age in different ways.

Using a table:
Carrie’s and Kim’s ages (years)

Write an Equation:
Let x = Carrie’s age. Let y = Kim’s age. From the table, you can see y is always 2 greater than y
So y=x +2

Example 2: Kyle runs twice as fast as Josh,

Equation: Let x = Josh’s distance and y = Kyle’s distance. So y=2 x

Inductive Reasoning – the process of reaching a conclusion based on an observed pattern.

1-9.3 – Extending a pattern

1 box has 9 tiles and 1 B, 2 boxes has 18 tiles and 2 B, 3 boxes has 27 tiles and 3 B

So,

Equation: If x = B Tiles and y = Total Tiles then y = 9 (x)
