Course Description:
This course is designed to review and extend the communicative skills and cultural aspects introduced in
Spanish II. It focuses on communication and comprehension through listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. Vocabulary and grammatical structures are practiced in context with their communicative functions
emphasized. Students develop an appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures and an understanding of the
Spanish-speaking world.

Spanish as Target Language (20% of your semester grade): Oral practice and listening is the key to
learning how to speak a language. You will communicate in Spanish from the moment you enter the class and
you will use the target language to communicate with your classmates and teacher throughout the class
period. It is also imperative that you use the target language in written communications, such as through
email. It is my desire that you are excited to demonstrate your skills outside of class as well. Please note that
communication in Spanish is a requirement and that your effort is an observable intent.

Reading (15% of your semester grade): You will participate in daily reading (Monday through Thursday)
of either your choice, or as assigned. Complete your daily reading log (Diario de Lectura) to reflect, to
participate in assigned activities, and to earn reading points. Please have a section in your binder exclusively
dedicated to the reading log and its associated activities. If you miss class, please make up reading points
during intervention.

Reading Schedule:
Mon: 15 minutes, Tue: 15 minutes, Wed: 30 minutes +written/oral activities (first semester only).
Thurs: 15 minutes; Historia y Cultura del Mundo Hispánico + written/oral activities.
The historic, geographic, and culture readings are assessed on your fall final exam.

Class and Reading Essential Words (20% of your semester grade):


Mondays through Thursdays, we learn Essential Words to assist in effective communication. The words are
available for study and review on my website.

A. Make a list of Essential Words with their translations to practice and to remember them. Write
example sentences for each. Learn the words each day and review the ones from previous days. You
will use the words in daily interactions with your classmates as well as with your teacher. There are
oral and written quizzes.
B. Make a list of Essential Reading Words. Write two daily essential words that you want to remember
with their translations for each day of your readings (8 per week). Write an example sentence for
each. Learn the words each day and practice them. It is imperative that you are ready to share your list
at any time and that you know its content. There are oral and written quizzes.

Spanish for a Connected World; Senderos 3; Vista Higher Learning (15% of your semester grade):
Each student has online access to this curriculum. We complete activities in class and it is expected that you
complete practice and homework activities online. The calendar of assignments and resource materials are
available on the Vista Higher Learning Website https://www.vhlcentral.com/home.

Active and Authentic Listening/Reading (15% of your semester grade):


Each Friday you will participate in active listening and reading. Your keen participation is imperative to
improve your target language skills and to earn a high grade in this category.
Final Exams (10 % of your semester grade):
On your Fall Final Exam, you will:

A. Demonstrate your ability to use Class Essential Words by:


⇾1. Translating Palabras Esenciales into Spanish and/or English.
⇾2. Conjugating Palabras Esenciales into the correct verb tenses.
➔ past/future/present/tener +que+infinitive/present subjunctive
⇾3. Writing example sentences that incorporate correct verb tenses with creative content.

B. Demonstrate your understanding of the history, culture, and geography of the Spanish-speaking
world.

Spring Final Exam (10% of your semester grade):


For your Spring Final Exam, you will:

⇾1. Demonstrate your ability to use Class Essential Wordsand Essential Reading Words as a basis to
write an original story.
⇾2. Utilize a variety of tenses including the present, the present perfect, the preterite, the imperfect,
the conditional, the pluperfect subjunctive, the imperative, the future, and the subjunctive.
⇾3. Illustrate your original story to enhance reader enjoyment.
⇾4. Display your storybook in our class library.

Binder and Vocabulary Lists: You will keep a chronological notebook or binder of Essential Words (Class
and Reading) as well as your reading logs.

Electronics: Appropriate and academic use of electronics is encouraged and is permitted with teacher
permission. The two resources allowed are bab.la and spanishdict.com. These two sites function like a
dictionary, which means, you can look up words, not sentences, and make reasonable choices based on
content given. All online translators are prohibited, and if used, will result in academic discipline.

Essential Words B- = 80-82
= 20% C+ = 77-79
Vista Online Learning C = 73-76
= 15% C- = 70-72
Active and Authentic Listening/Reading F = 0-69
= 15%
Final Exam
= 10%
Make-up Policy: You are expected to make-up assignments by Friday of the week that you missed. Please
be cognizant of the importance of attending class regularly to increase your proficiency and maintain high
reading and Spanish as target language points.

Behavior: 1. As a common courtesy, do not walk into the class with your phone in hand.
2. As you enter the classroom, grab a reader of either your choice, or as assigned (Mon-Thurs).
3. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.
4. Participate, communicate in the target language, and remain on task.
5. Electronic devices may be used with teacher permission only (Online dictionaries are allowed:
bab.la or spanishdict.com only, as well as Vista Higher Learning Online Resources).
