Question#1: Define and Explain Normal and Shear stress acting on
plane and also its determination by plotting Mohr Circle.

Explanation:

Normal stress is the stress acting normal to the cross-section where

the perpendicular load acts in the plane.
OR
Normal Stress is the stress that acts perpendicular to the cross
sectional area while shear stress is the stress that acts parallel to the
corss sectional area.

Shear stress is the stress acting tangential to the plane.

In Mohr's circle, the normal stress is plotted on abscissa and the
shear stress is plotted on ordinate. The normal stresses (σx ,σy) and
shear stress (τ) values are plotted. A circle with center (σavg, 0) with
radius R is drawn.

The equation of circle is

(σx - σavg )2 + τ2 = R2.

In any plane the normal stress and shear can be found by using the
Mohr’s circle. In Mohr’s circle 2θ represents the plane angle of θ in
real. Principal stresses can also be found by the Mohr’s circle and
vice-versa.

Question No 2:
Ans:
Consider the image attatched which is the drawing of the Mohr's

Circle. The initial coordinates are

P1: (σx,τ) and P2: (σy,−τ)

P1: (10,40) and P2: (300,−40)

The center of the circle is:

C=2σx+σy =2300+10=155

The radius of the circle is:

R=(τ)2+(2σy−σx)2 =402+(2300−10)2 =150.42 MPa

Draw the Mohr’s circle from the points: ( attatched drawing). Plane
AB is inclined 20 degrees from the plane where in the circle is twice
the angle, hence 40 degrees. Plane AB is represented by the green
line.

The angle between the green line and the x axis is:
θAB=40−arcsin(40/150.42) =24.58 degrees

Calculate the shear and normal stress of plane AB which is where the
line intersects the circle

τab=RsinθAB=150.42sin24.58=62.57 MPa

σab=RcosθAB +C =150.42cos24.58+155 =291.80 MPa
