TEST 03 IDENTIFICATION
Welcome to the Santos Dumont English Assessment. I am (name) and this is (name). (He/she) will
not interact with us during the test.
1) Please tell me your full name.
2) Please sign here the same way you signed your ID. Remember to make sure your signature in
SACI is the same, and also that your photo is recent.
3) May I see your pilot’s license and your ID? State ANAC’S CODE (Thank you)
4) Do you have any electronic devices with you?
5) Look at the camera, please. (Thank you)
The test has four parts. It takes approximately thirty minutes. Responses should be immediate,
appropriate and informative. During the test, if you don’t understand an instruction or question,
please ask me for clarification. Are the instructions clear?
PART 1: AVIATION TOPICS
Part One: “Aviation Topics”. In this part, you have to answer questions related to aviation. You
should take approximately one minute to answer each question and I will tell you when to stop if
necessary.
1) Why pilots need to have a medical certificate? How is it conducted? (2 perguntas em uma)
Well, in my opinion to pilots need to have a medical certificate to make sure that they are healthy to
fly (they are in good health condition). Every year (once a year) we need to undergo medical exams in
our city and everything is okay, we get a CMA (aeronautical medical exam) Aeromedical examination)
2) What changes can we expect regarding communication between pilots and controllers in the
future?
We can expect a lot of changes regarding ATC communication, for example DATALINK. It’s already in
use. We will replace voice transmissions for text messages. I also believe that radio technology will be
improved.
3) Tell me about the advices your flight instructor gave you before your check ride.
He gave me very simple but useful/important advices like; to be calm, to study every detail of the
flight before takeoff, to rest and eat well the day before, to be focused, to be concentrated on the
flight... Another thing that I think it’s important is to fly at least five minutes ahead of the aircraft, it
means to be prepared to execute the right adjustments just in case I need it (change frequencies, to
descend, make a turn...
Level 4 Level 5
Possible follow-‐ up questions to be asked if necessary:
Can you say that once again, please?
Can you tell me a little bit more about that?
Can you give me an example/or some examples?
Why? / Why not? / How?
Thank you. That is the end of Part One. Let’s now move on to Part Two
PART 2: INTERACTING AS A PILOT
Part Two: “Interacting as a Pilot”. In this part you have to interact with the Air Traffic Control in five
different situations. You may ask the controller to say again once (and you will not be penalized for that).
After listening to the controller, you should interact as the pilot. All information is important.
You are the pilot of a twin-‐engine aircraft. Your call sign is ANAC 123.
Please put the headphones on. Let ś check the volume.
AUDIO CHECK
Situation 1) You are approaching Manchester Airport. Listen to the ATC and read back.
01
ANAC 123, [DESCEND TO FLIGHT LEVEL 090]. [FLY HEADING FOX ALFA VOR] [AND
ADJUST SPEED TO TWO ZERO ZERO KNOTS]. [3]
Minimum Interaction: “Anac 123, roger. Descend to FL 090, heading Fox Alpha VOR and
adjusting speed to 200kt.’”
Now, during approach, ATC instructed you to hold over Fox Alfa VOR, but you don’t have much fuel and
you are not able to keep holding for too long. Contact Control and tell them you have to land within 15
minutes. Then listen and interact appropriately.
Minimum interaction: “Control, we don’t have much fuel to keep holding for more than 20 minutes, ANAC
123.”
02 ANAC 123, [YOU’LL BE GIVEN PRIORITY TO LAND] [EXPECT LANDING ON RUNWAY 18 LEFT]
[CONFIRM IF YOU HAVE ONLY FIFTY MINUTES OF REMAINING FUEL]. [3]
Minimum interaction: “NEGATIVE, we have to land within fifteen (15) minutes…, Anac 123.”
What did the controller say?
Minimum interaction: “The controller told me to land on runway 18 left and asked me to confirm if I
had only fifty minutes of remaining fuel”
Thank you. Now, situation number 2.
Situation 2) You are ready to initiate descent to land at Lisbon Airport. Listen to ATC and read back all
information.
03
ANAC 123, LISBON CONTROL. [EXPECT BINA 2 ARRIVAL, TO RUNWAY ONE ONE
RIGHT]. [CLEARED TO DESCEND TO 5 THOUSAND FEET] [REPORT OVER OUTER
MARKER]. [QNH ONE ZERO ONE ONE] [4]
Minimum interaction: “ANAC 123, Expecting BINA 2 arrival to rwy 11R, descend to 5000,
report outer mark, QHN 1011”
Now, during the descent, you lose hydraulic system. Because of that, you will need assistance to taxi
after landing. You will not have nose wheel steering capability. Call Lisbon Control and inform them
about your problem and intentions. Then listen to the ATC and interact.
Minimum interaction: “PAN PAN, PAN PAN, PAN PAN, Lisbon Control, ANAC 123. We have lost hydraulics
and we will need to be towed to the gate after landing. “
04 ANAC 123, ROGER PAN PAN, [CLEARED STRAIGHT-‐IN ILS APPROACH] [RUNWAY ONE
ONE RIGHT]. [REPORT ESTABLISHED]. [I UNDERSTOOD YOU LOST HYDRAULIC CAPABILITY,
COULD YOU CONFIRM?] [4]
Minimum interaction: “AFFIRM, we have lost hydraulics, we’ll need to be towed to the gate,
ANAC 123.’’
What did the controller say? Será perguntado caso você tenha esquecido algo
Minimum interaction: “The controller asked me to confirm if I had lost hydraulic capability and he
told me land on runway 11 right”
Thank you. Now situation number 3.
Situation 3) You are on cruise flight heading Toronto at flight level three six zero FL330. You are not able to fly
above flight level four one zero FL410 due to weight limitations. And below flight level two nine zero can
compromise your fuel endurance. Listen to the ATC and read back.
05
ANAC 123, TORONTO CONTROL. [SQUAWK IDENT ON TRANSPONDER] [WE’VE BEEN
INFORMED OF SEVERE ICING CONDITIONS [50 MILES AWAY FROM YOUR PRESENT
POSITION], [FROM FLIGHT LEVEL TWO EIGHT ZERO UP TO FLIGHT LEVEL FOUR ONE ZERO].
[ACKNOWLEDGE AND SAY INTENTIONS]. [5]
Minimum interaction: “Toronto Control, Anac 123, ident on transponder, we are aware of
the stormy area. We intend to divert to the nearest airport…”
Now, due to severe icing conditions ahead, you activated your deicing systems and it is intermittent. To
avoid severe problems, inform this problem to the ATC and request descent to FL 230 and to divert to
Hamilton Airport. Then interact appropriately.
Minimum interaction: Toronto Control, our deicing system is not working properly/not reliable, so we
request immediate descent to FL 230 and to divert to Hamilton Airport, ANAC 123.”
06 ANAC 123, [TRANSMISSION WAS POOR] [CONFIRM YOU ARE ABLE TO KEEP FLIGHT LEVEL
THREE SIX ZERO] [KEEP PRESENT HEADING TO TORONTO AIRPORT] . [3]
Minimum interaction: “Control, NEGATIVE, we request to divert immediately to Hamilton
Airport, ANAC 123”
Thank you. Now situation number 4.
Situation 4) You are ready to taxi at Madrid Airport. Listen to Madrid Ground and read back.
07 ANAC 123, [TAXI APPROVED VIA HOTEL 1 AND JULIET TO HOLDING POINT RUNWAY ONE
FOUR.] [GIVE WAY TO ALITALIA BOEING LEAVING KILO TO YOUR RIGHT] [WAIT FOR
TOWER INSTRUCTIONS TO CROSS THE RUNWAY]. [CALL THEM ON ONE TWO SEVEN
DECIMAL FIVE ZERO]. [4]
Minimum interaction: “Madrid Ground, roger taxi approved via H1 and J holding point
runway 14, give way Alitalia leaving Kilo. Wait for tower instructions to cross runway. Call on
127.50… Anac 123”.
Minimum interaction: Ground, ANAC 123. While taxiing, we veered off the taxiway and got stuck on the
grass. We need to be towed back.
08 ANAC 123, [MAINTAIN POSITION]. [AFTER ALITALIA YOU CAN CONTINUE TAXIING VIA
JULIET]. [WHEN READY TO CROSS, CONTACT TOWER]. [3]
Minimum interaction: “Ground, ANAC 123, NEGATIVE, we are stuck on the grass and we need
assistance here.”
Now, while taxing on Hotel 1 transition to Juliet, this happens to you. Call ground, inform them about your
problem and say intentions. Then, listen to the controller and interact.
What did the controller say?
Situation 5) You are on final approach to Confins Airport. Listen to the ATC and read back all information.
Audio 09
ANAC 123, [CONTINUE ILS APPROACH] [TO RUNWAY ONE SIX] [FOLLOWED BY CIRCLING TO RUNWAY
THREE FOUR]. [REPORT BASE LEG] [4]
Minimum interaction: “Roger, continue ILS approach to rwy 16 followed by circling to rwy 34. Report base leg,
ANAC 123.’’
Now, on short final to runway 34, you see this. Report the situation and say intentions. Then, listen to the
controller and interact.
Minimum interaction: “Confins Tower, we are going around due to a truck on the runway, ANAC 123”
Go around: arremetida, windshear Missed approach: no visual w the rwy, not stabilized Pull up straight
ahead: cabrar mantem proa.
10 ANAC 123, [CLIMB TO THREE THOUSAND FEET] [REPORT UPWIND LEG] [I UNDERSTOOD YOU
ARE PERFORMING A MISSED APPROACH DUE TO A RUNWAY INCURSION] IS THAT RIGHT?
[3]
Minimum interaction: “Confins Tower, AFFIRM. We are going around because there is a truck on the
runway…”
Minimum interaction: “The controller asked to confirm if I was going around due to a runway
incursion and she told me to perform a missed approach”
What did the controller say?
Thank you. Now situation number 5.
PART 3 – UNEXPECTED SITUATIONS
Part Three: “Unexpected Situations”. In this part of the test, you will listen to three different
communications between pilots and air traffic controllers. The recordings will be played twice. There is a five-‐
second pause before the recording is repeated. After listening to the recording, you should tell me
everything that the pilot and the controller said. I will then ask you a question.
At the end of Part 3, I will ask you to compare the three situations, so please take notes.
Do you have any questions?
Thank you. That is the end of Part 2. Let’s move on the third part of the test.
Situation 1) Listen to Situation number One:
11 ATC: SKYJET 291, BRASILIA CENTER. [TURN RIGHT HEADING ONE FIVE ZERO
IMMEDIATELY]. [THE AREA AHEAD OF YOU IS RESTRICTED]. [IT IS A MILITARY AREA] [3]
PILOT: BRASILIA CENTER, SKYJET 291. [WE CANNOT DEVIATE TO THE RIGHT NOW]. [WE NEED TO
KEEP PRESENT HEADING TO AVOID A VERY SEVERE STORMY AREA] [TO OUR RIGHT].
Now tell me, in your own words, everything that the pilot and the controller said.
In this situation Brasilia Center (the ATC) said to Skyjet 291 (Cleared/requested/instructed) TURN
RIGHT HEADING ONE FIVE ZERO IMMEDIATELY because the area ahead of them was RESTRICTED/
MILITARY AREA.
As a result/as a response the pilot of Skyjet 291 said that they couldn’t DEVIATE TO THE RIGHT and
they had/need to KEEP their PRESENT HEADING TO AVOID A VERY SEVERE STORMY AREA to their
RIGHT.
1.) Is it allowed to disobey ATC instructions? In which cases?
Each pilot in command who, in an emergency, or in response to a traffic alert and collision
avoidance system resolution advisory, deviates from an ATC clearance or instruction shall
notify ATC of that deviation as soon as possible. In few words, you can disobey an ATC instruction
every time the safety of the flight is in risk/dangerous.
Situation 2) Listen to Situation number two:
12 PILOT: RIO CONTROL, PR-‐CFT. [WE HEARD A STRONG NOISE] [FOLLOWED BY AN
INDICATION OF AUTOPILOT FAILURE]. [WE NEED TO DESCEND TO A VISUAL ALTITUDE].
ATC: PR-‐CFT, ROGER. [CLEARED TO DESCEND TO FLIGHT LEVEL 080].
Now tell me, in your own words, everything that the pilot and the controller said.
The pilot told he heard a strong noise followed by an autopilot failure and he said he needed to descend to a
visual altitude
The ATC cleared the aircraft to descend to flight level 080
2.) What are the advantages and disadvantages of flying with Autopilot?
Flying using an autopilot system permits to reduce manual workload and fatigue, precision in the handling of
routine tasks and of course to increase the safety of the flight. On the other hand, the autopilot can give you
false alarms, Increase in mental workload due to additional monitoring of systems, Silent failures and reduce
alertness of operator, by offering a false sense of security.
Situation 3) Listen to Situation number three:
13 PILOT: [MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY], LONDON CENTER. SPEED BIRD 97. [WE WERE
STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.] [WE LOST ENGINE NUMBER FOUR]. [REQUEST IMMEDIATE
DESCENT AND PRIORITY TO LAND].
ATC: SPEED BIRD 97, ROGER MAYDAY. [CLEARED TO FLY HEADING BRONX VOR] AND [DESCEND TO
FLIGHT LEVEL ONE ZERO ZERO]. [WE WILL REQUEST ASSISTANCE ON THE GROUND].
Now tell me, in your own words, everything that the pilot and the controller said.
The Speed bird 97 pilot reported MAYDAY to London Center as they were struck by lightning and they
also said that they had lost engine number four and requested immediate descend and priority to land.
Wait for interaction
2.) What kind of damages can a bolt of lightning cause? Give some examples.
Planes are designed to minimize the effect of these strikes, allowing lightning to safely exit through
an extremity of the plane, such as a nose or tail. Damages caused by lightning are rare. After a
lightning strike, it is possible that one or more generators were tripped off line (this is very rare but
does happen). That would account for the lack of cabin lights until the generator was reset.
Now, considering the three situations you heard in part 3:
-‐ How would you compare them? You may want to compare them in terms of severity, possible
solutions and ways of prevention. Which one do you think is the most difficult to deal with?
Why?
In my opinion the first situation in not serious. If you’re the captain of the aircraft and you need to
desobey any kind of ATC instruction in order to keep/preserve the integrity of the flight and all the
occupants you can do it.
I think that situatuon number three is more serious than situation number one but less serious
than situation number two. The pilot can prevent lighting strike basically trying to avoid storm
clouds
The second situation is the most serious one. In this case, you should follow manual procedures
and try to descend to a visual altitude like the pilot did and then take their airplane to the
maintenance check
Thank you. That is the end of Part Three. Let’s move on to the last part of the test, part four.
PART 4 – PICTURE DESCRIPTION AND DISCUSSION
In this part, you will tell me what you can see in this picture (show the picture to the test taker) and
what you think is happening in it. After that, I will ask you some questions. (Pause) Look at the picture
carefully. You may take a few moments to think before you start talking.
Are instructions clear?
Wait for interaction
1 Please describe this picture to me. If necessary: -‐What do you think was happening when this picture
was taken? / What’s happening?
2 Choose one:
What do you think happened before this picture was taken?; or
What do you think these people were doing before this picture was taken?
What do you think was happening before this picture was taken?
Can you create a short story based on this picture? Use your imagination.
3 Imagine that this picture has just been taken:
What do you think will happen next?
In this picture I can see two pilots in a flight simulator session. They are simulating a flight/they’re training
to execute some procedures such as engine failures, engine fires, hydraulic failures, severe weather
conditions and so on. They are seating next to each other and with their seatbelts fastened. The captain is
seated on the left and the first officer is seated on the right hand side. I can see lights and functional
switches on the overhead panel.
I can see the runway in front of them and I guess they’re preparing for landing in a beautiful day.
Flight simulators are crucial when it comes to initial and recurrent training for pilots.
1) Have you ever been trained in flight simulator? How does it improve safety?
I have never been in a simulator before. A simulator is very important for us to practice emergencies
procedures and learn how to fly an aircraft reducing the high costs of flight hours.
2) What is the worst kind of emergency a pilot might have? Why?
Engine failure is for sure one of the worst situation a pilot might have, especially if you’re flying a single
engine aircraft in a very remote area like the Amazon.
3) “Although simulators can teach pilots unexpected emergencies, dealing with them in real life is much
more challenging than in simulation training.”
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
I completely agree with this statement. In real life you probably won’t have a second chance and you have to
have all the procedures in mind at the time you need them. A simulator is an efficient and less costly way of
keeping pilots up-to-date. High tech simulators are able to simulate situations very close to a real life.
Ok, thank you! So this is the end of the test. Thank you very much for coming.
END OF THE TEST
