7.7 - The Closed Circuit
Machine shops prioritize safety, and closed circuits are often used
in safety interlocks. These interlocks prevent machines from
operating if safety conditions are not met.
A machine might have a safety interlock that requires a door to be
closed before the machine can operate. When the door is open, the
interlock breaks the circuit, preventing the machine from starting.
When the door is closed, the circuit is completed, allowing the
machine to operate.
Open Circuit
A circuit in which the continuity is broken due to which the electric current can not
flow is known as the open circuit. In an open circuit, the current flowing is zero, thus
no power dissipates from an open circuit.
CLOSED CIRCUIT
An electric circuit through which current can flow in an uninterrupted path. Compare
open circuit.
Short Circuit
A short circuit occurs when the current finds a way to bypass the appliance on a path
that has little or no resistance
