Abstract
This study investigated the influence of parental visiting on emotional status and academic performance of students in
Vinespring Girls High School in Ruai, Nairobi county. Three research hypothesis were formulated to guide the study.
Several eruditions that are related to the study were reviewed. One hundred copies of questionnaires were dispensed to
one hundred sample students from students in Vinespring Girls High School to engender data. Their responses were
itemized and put in frequency tables and the spearman's rank order was used for the analysis. The findings indicated
the following:
a) There is no significant relationship between indulgent parental visiting on emotional status and academic
performance of Vinespring Girls High School.
b) There is a significant relationship between customary parental visiting on emotional status and academic
performance of Vinespring Girls High School.
c) There is significant relationship between Authoritative parental visiting on emotional status and academic
performance of Vinespring Girls High School.

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
Parents have a vital role to play in the life of a child. Mainly, family has a responsibility to socialize children for

involvement encompasses different activities including attending school functions and taking part
in school governance. When parents play a major role in their children's academic performance, children
tend to succeed not only in schools but also through out their lives. According to most researches done,
the most accurate prediction of students achievement is not based on either the income or the social status
of their parents but on the extent to which the student's parents are able to create enormous time which tends
to heave the child's courage in learning and express high expectations for their children's achievement and
future careers.
The application of parental involvement in schools has been linked with academic achievement. The
concussion of parental complicity emanate from parental values and educational aspirations and that these
are displayed continuously through parental enthusiasm and positive parenting style. This study will investigate
the level of influence of parental involvement on emotional status and academic performance of their
respective children.
1.2 Statement of the problem
Parental visiting has really influenced the performance of students at Vinespring Girls High School, which
needs investigation. Parents of Vinespring Girls High School are often faced with unique challenges that

hinder them from meeting the learners needs which includes responding to school activities such as
attending parents meetings, conferences, sports, academic clinic days, disciplinary cases and discussing
the academic progress of the child. If the above needs are not attended to, there is a likelihood of the
child not performing well academically. The study therefore

1.4 Research objectives
The research study addressed the following specific objectives;
i) To investigate whether parent participation in curriculum activities in school has an influence to the
academic performance of students in Vinespring Girls High Shcool.
ii) To investigate whether parents regularly visiting the school to check on the well being of the students
has any influence on the academic performance and emotional status of students in Vinespring Girls
High School.
iii) To find out whether media communication from parents to the students has an influence on emotional
status and academic performance of students in Vinespring Girls High School.
1.5 Research questions
The study addresses the following study questions:
i) How does parent participation in curriculum activities activities in school influence the academic
performance of students.
ii) How does regular visiting of parents to school to check on the well being of their children influence
the emotion status and academic performance of the students.
iii) To what extent does media communication from parent to student affect the academic performance
and emotional status of the students.

School. The findings of this study will help in improving parental visiting which will improve the
students emotional status and academic performance of students in the school. The findings could also
be useful in managing education of the learners. This study will also provide intellectual inputs for
future researchers in search of knowledge on influence of parental visiting on emotional status and
academic performance of students. The findings can also be helpful to teachers and parents in
developing programs to upgrade their skill, knowledge, positive attitude and competencies of
handling children.
1.7 Delimitations of the study
The study focused on the influence of parental visiting on emotional status and academic performance
of students in Vinespring Girls High School in Ruai location, Njiru sub county, Nairobi county. The
study was done in Ruai location which is one of the education locations in Nairobi county and therefore
the findings may not apply to other geographical regions outside the county unless prevalent
circumstances.

repeated evidence has confirmed that the most accurate predicator of student's achievement is the
extent to which the family is involved in the child's education and not the level of the family income.
Macmillan (2000) noted that parental pressure has a positive and significant effect on both public
and private school's academic performance.

2.3 Influence of parental visiting on emotional status
4. Any other business consideration
The finding also showed that there is significant influence of emotional status of students on their
academic achievement. Emotional status has to with ability to monitor one's feelings and other people's
feelings, analyzing them and using the results to guide one's thinking and actions. This is much needed
in the students to be able to excel academically since it ha to do with cognitive domain of the students.
Acceptance
In support to this finding, Goleman(1995) asserted that success depends on several intelligences
and the control of emotion. According to him, intelligence accounts for only twenty percent of the total
success while the rest goes to social and emotional intelligence. In support of this, Abisamra (2000),
concluded that since emotional intelligence affects the academic performance of the students, then,
it is imperative for schools to integrate it in the curriculum so that the level of students' success
would rise.
2.4 Conclusion and recommendation
The findings revealed that there is a strong joint effect of the parental involvement and students'
emotional status on the academic achievement. Parents are seen as inevitable in the success of
their children upon which emotional status and intelligence is built. It was recommended that

CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Research design
The study was a survey research which sought out the relationship between two or more variables.
This is because the study did not manipulate any variable, the variables already exist.
3.2 Population of study
The population of study included all students studying at Vinespring Girls High School from form one
to form four, together with their parents or guardian.
3.3 Sample size and sampling
Multi-stage sampling technique was used in this research work. Vinespring Girls High school was
stratified into four major classes comprising of form one, form two, form three and form four. Being that
each class consisted of more than one stream, every stream was selected and students together
with their parents were selected through stratified sampling technique and they were thus used for
this study. In every class, a maximum of 25 students were selected. A total of 100 students and their
parents form the study sample.
3.4 Data collection instruments
Two instruments, parents' questionnaire with a reliability of 73% and students' questionnaire with a
reliability of 75% were used in the data collection.
3.5 Data collection procedure
The researcher administered the questionnaires. Informed consent of the participants was also sought
before the administration of the questionnaires. The student's questionnaire was administered on
the students in school. The parent's questionnaire was given to students to take home for their
parents to respond and return the same to the researcher within three weeks. The two instruments
were later collected and scored for analysis.
3.6 Data analysis techniques
The data collected was subjected to quantitative statistical analysis. The data was analyzed using
frequency counts and percentages. Some parents and guardians who were expected to respond
to the parents' questionnaire never returned them to the researcher through their children.
This reduced the number of respondents that participated in the study.
