ENGINEERING MECHANICS

MIDTERM PROJECT. Solve the following problems. Kindly show your solutions.

RESULTANT OF CONCURRENT FORCE SYSTEM

Problem 1: If Ø = 30° and the resultant force acting on the gusset plate is directed along
the positive 𝑥 axis, determine the magnitude of 𝐹2 and the resultant force.

Problem 2: Determine the magnitude and direction measured counterclockwise from the
positive 𝑥 axis of the resultant force of the three forces acting on the ring 𝐴. Take 𝐹1 =
500 𝑁 and 𝜃 = 20°.
Problem 3: a.) Resolve 𝐹1 into components along the 𝑢 and 𝑣 axes, and determine the
magnitudes of these components.
b.) Resolve 𝐹2 into components along the 𝑢 and 𝑣 axes, and determine the
magnitudes of these components.

MOMENT OF A FORCE

Problem 4: Assuming counterclockwise moments as positive, compute the moment of force 𝐹

= 200 𝑘𝑔 and force 𝑃 = 165 𝑘𝑔 about points 𝐴, 𝐵, 𝐶, 𝑎𝑛𝑑
Problem 5: Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant and its 𝑥 and 𝑦 intercept.

a.)Solve for the moment that 𝐹1 = 500 𝑁 exerts

about point O.
Problem 6:

b.) Solve for the moment that 𝐹2 = 600 𝑁 exerts about Point
O.
c.) Solve for the resultant moment exerts about point O.
RESULTANT OF PARALLEL FORCES

Determine the magnitude of the resultant of the parallel force systems shown in problems
7-10. Locate the resultant with respect to the left support. Assume that all forces are
vertical and that the members are horizontal.

Problem 11: Determine the couple moment acting on t

Problem 12: Two couples act on the beam. Determine the magnitude of 𝐹 so that the
couple moment is 450 𝑙𝑏 · 𝑓𝑡, counterclockwise. Where on the beam does the resultant
couple moment act?

Problem 13: The three-step pulley is subjected to the given couples. (a) Compute the value of
the resultant couple. (b) Determine the force (equivalent couple) acting at the rim of the
middle pulley that are required to balance the system.
Problem 14: Two couples act on the frame. If 𝑑 = 4 𝑓𝑡, determine the resultant couple
moment.

RESULTANT OF NON-COPLANAR FORCE SYSTEM:

Problem 15: Replace the loading system by an equivalent resultant force and specify where
the resultant’s line of action intersects the member measured from A.
Problem 16: Replace the force system acting on the frame by an equivalent resultant force
and specify where the resultant’s line of action intersects at member BC, measured from
point B.

Problem 17: The three forces shown below create a vertical resultant acting through point 𝐴.
If T is known to be 361 𝑙𝑏, compute the values of 𝐹 and 𝑃.
EQUILIBRIUM
Problem 18: The truss is supported by a pin at 𝐴 and a roller at 𝐵. Determine the
support reactions.

Problem 19: Determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at the pin
𝐴 and the force in the cable 𝐵𝐶. Neglect the thickness of the members.

Problem 20: The roof truss shown is supported by a roller at 𝐴 and a hinge at 𝐵. Find
the values of the reactions.

Problem 22: The upper beam is supported at 𝐷 and a roller at 𝐶 which separates the upper
and lower beams. Determine the values of the reactions at 𝐴, 𝐵, 𝐶 and 𝐷. Neglect the
weight of the beams.
