1.0 SCOPE

 This Method statement outlines and provides the guidelines to be


followed for preparation and laying of Road GSB( Granular Sub Base) in
relation with GE Diesel Locomotive Project, Marhowra, Bihar, India.

 This work will follow all requirements, specifications, local codes or any
other governing regulatory agency or body after getting employer’s
approval.

2.0 PURPOSE

 The purpose of this document is to execute GSB work as per standard


specification/guide line and to meet the process, quality, safety as per
best industry practices and customer satisfaction.

4.0 ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:


 Project In charge: He shall be responsible to guide and give direction to the
entire site team to execute the job as mentioned in this WMS.

 Project Manager: He shall be responsible to arrange & provide required


resources to execute the job. Furthermore, he will ensure the implementation of
this method statement during work execution.

 Planning Engineer: Required Schedule, resources shall be well planned in

consultation with project manager.

 QA/QC Engineer: He shall be responsible to inspect and perform test as per ITP

& MTP. Any observation/deviation shall be captured and communicated to

construction manager for corrective as well as preventive action.

 Site Engineer: He shall be responsible to perform the job accordingly to the WMS

and daily job schedule. He is also responsible to ensure safety, quality and other

requirements applicable for the job.

 Safety Engineer: He shall be responsible to ensure safety prior to

commencement of job at site. Adequate no’s of Safety officer shall be deployed by

him for safety supervision or as per site requirements.

5.0 TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS


Following machineries & equipments to be used as per requirements while working;

 Poclain
 JCB
 Dozer
 Grader/Dozer
 Vibro Roller /Smooth Wheel Roller
 Hywa (Tipper)
 Water Tanker
 Auto Level
 Total Station

6.0 Materials:
 The Material to be used for GSB work shall consist of 20mm,10mm and crusher dust of
suitable proportion and fulfilling grading requirement of Morth Table 400-1( Grading-III).

Proportion of said material shall be finalized based on mix design. Similarly material
should be confirmed the physical requirement specified in Morth Table-400-2.

7.0 SUB GRADE PREPARATION:


 Sub grade to receive GSB shall be free from vegetation and other extraneous matter.

 Profile and level of sub grade should meet the approved road drawing requirement.

 97 %( Min) compaction shall be ensured for sub grade prior to GSB laying.

8.0 SPREADING & COMPACTING PROCEDURE.

 GSB material shall be mixed in stock yard by suitable mechanical


means to ensure homogenous and uniform mix.
 Requirement of water shall be as per approved mix design.
 GSB shall be spread on prepared sub grade with help of grader/dozer
or similar mechanical equipments of adequate capacity.
 The Motor Grader blade having controls suitable for initial adjustment
and for maintaining the required slope and grade.
 Required slope/gradient shall be checked during spreading operation.
 Moisture content of the mix shall be checked at the time of compaction
and excess variation (1-2% below the OMC) from the optimum moisture
content shall be avoided.
 Immediately after laying of GSB mix, rolling shall be done by an
approved roller.

 100mm compacted thickness GSB can be done in a single layer with


help of tandem/vibratory roller of adequate capacity. If the thickness of
the compacted layer does not exceeded 100mm,a smooth wheeled
roller of 80-100 KN may be used.

 Rolling shall commence at the lower edge and proceed towards upper
edge longitudinally for portions having unidirectional cross fall or on
super elevation.

 Each pass of roller shall uniformly overlap not less than one third of the
track made in the preceding pass.

 During rolling, the grade and cross fall shall be checked and any high
spots or depressions which become apparent, corrected by removing or
adding fresh materials.

 The speed of the roller shall not exceed 5KM/hr.

 Rolling shall be continued till the density achieved is at least 98% of Lab
MDD.

 After compaction, if any loose or segregated layer observed same shall


be rectified by more rolling and compaction.

9.0 SAFETY:

 SPCPL Site Engineer and Safety Supervisor shall carry out the safety
site inspections to ensure that safety requirements laid out in the safe
work plan are followed before, during and after the work. SPCPL Safety
Engineer / Supervisor shall review HSE Plan and secure Work Permit
shall be obtained prior to start of block work.
 During the Period of construction, arrangement for the traffic shall be
provided and maintained.
 Wherever necessary barricading and signages will be provided for GSB
work area. The checks shall be conducted prior to commencement of
GSB work.
 Work will be started only after getting the work permit from the concerned
department of the project. All equipment’s will have access in site
premise after inspection and verification of documents as well as physical
check by HSE Department.

 All machinery shall be inspected and fitness is to be obtained from


concern authority prior to use.
 All workers should stay away from moving equipments.
 Signage Board for restriction of vehicle speed to be displayed.
 Sleeping/ Rest of worker underneath of parked equipment is not allowed.
 More precaution is required in night shift operation as dust and darkness
reduce the visibility.
 Proper illumination is required for night shift operation.
